Liam Sercombe's goal took Oxford to within two points of leaders Plymouth

Oxford maintained their unbeaten home record as Liam Sercombe's goal saw them beat League Two leaders Plymouth.

Alex MacDonald and Ryan Taylor had both hit the post in the first half before the midfielder found the target.

Appleton - U's reached points target

Graham Carey flashed a second-half free-kick just wide of goal as Plymouth pressed for an equaliser but Oxford held on to make it four wins in five.

The U's almost extended their advantage, but substitute Pat Hoban was denied when his header was tipped on to the crossbar by Luke McCormick.

The defeat for Plymouth was their first in eight league games while third-placed Oxford stretched their unbeaten run to seven games.

Oxford United manager Michael Appleton told BBC Radio Oxford:

"I thought the players were fantastic, especially in the first half. The only frustration at half-time is that it was a game I felt we should have put to bed.

"That's always in the back of your mind. The players are obviously aware of that and sometimes, psychologically, you can take a few steps backwards and soak up a bit of pressure, as we did at times in the second half.

"But, I still thought we created many opportunities again to put the game to bed. Luckily we got the goal and that was the one that was needed."

Plymouth Argyle manager Derek Adams told BBC Radio Devon:

"I thought it was a game of two halves. In the first half Oxford played very well and in the second half we were excellent as well.

"From my point of view, we could've taken something from the game. We had opportunities in the second half and so did Oxford.

"You miss a player like Reuben Reid because of his goals, but we had players in the team tonight who caused Oxford problems. It was a high-tempo game, but Reuben was obviously a miss for us.

"We've overachieved already this season. We've showed through winning games how competitive we can be and Oxford are a well-experienced and well-staffed side and we've had to come here and play against a very good team."
