League Two: Portsmouth 0-3 Newport County

Newport County
Newport's players celebrate taking the lead at Fratton Park

Portsmouth's League Two promotion hopes took a hit as Newport County maintained their 100% record at Fratton Park.

Newport took the lead late in the first half when Darren Jones beat goalkeeper Ryan Fulton to a cross, but the goalkeeper claimed that he was impeded.

The hosts' task was made harder when Gary Roberts was shown a second yellow before Scott Boden doubled Newport's lead and sub Dean Morgan made it three.

Portsmouth slip to sixth in League Two while Newport are now up to 18th.

Striker Boden has now scored seven goals in seven games for the Exiles, who have now won on all their three visits to Portsmouth over the past three seasons.

Portsmouth manager Paul Cook told BBC Radio Solent:

Cook on Portsmouth v Newport

"It's summed our season up in one game. We promise so much and yet we fail to deliver. That's where we are as a team at the minute.

"We're a League Two team with League Two players, I'm a League Two manager and, with that, you get inconsistencies. We've offered too many this season in my opinion to be promoted automatically.

"We have all believed that we could have been promoted automatically. With that result and performance, no matter what happens this season now, there'll be a squiggle against us."
