National League: Cheltenham Town 3-1 Grimsby Town

James Dayton (centre)
James Dayton, who had not scored all season before Monday, has now netted in back-to-back games

Cheltenham Town extended their lead at the top of the National League to five points as they battled to a home win over third-placed Grimsby Town.

James Dayton's expert, curling free-kick gave the hosts a first-half lead.

After the break, Grimsby levelled through Andy Monkhouse's neat finish but Harry Pell soon tucked Cheltenham back in front from close range.

Danny Wright's crisp, downward header from Jack Munns' cross late on sealed the Robins' third straight home win.

Defeat saw Grimsby lose back-to-back games for the first time this season, and leaves them 17 points adrift of Gary Johnson's side, though they do have three games in hand.

Cheltenham Town boss Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:

Gary Johnson on Cheltenham v Grimsby

"The energy and power and the battling qualities - that's how you have to perform and our two strikers were unplayable, our defenders got on to things and I was very proud of them.

"Three good goals, well worked and you're not going to have it all your own way against a Grimsby team that are desperate to get in to the Football League.

"Let's be careful, because we haven't done it yet, but it has been a great night for our football club.

"We'll keep our feet on the floor, we've still four games to go and Forest Green have got five, so we've got to be careful that we're not on an open top bus tour tomorrow - we're not there yet, but that's one giant leap for Cheltenham Town."

Grimsby boss Paul Hurst told BBC Radio Humberside:

"Ultimately I think we had enough chances tonight and put them under some pressure at 1-1, I thought we were the better team but then we concede that second goal and obviously then the third makes it extremely difficult for us.

"We need to cement a play off spot, and that starts at Aldershot on Tuesday night, another game away from home, another long journey, but we've got to be ready for that.

"We're still in a good position, and a better position then everyone else in the league table apart from Forest Green and Cheltenham, yes that's two defeats, extremely disappointing, but the team tonight at times created chances, we just found it difficult to handle the centre forward. I do think 3-1 is a little harsh."
