Motherwell striker Louis Moult faces a lay-off until September as he undergoes an operation.

Manager Mark McGhee had said before Saturday's League Cup defeat by Rangers that Moult would receive an injection to play despite a groin injury.

The 24-year-old missed a good headed chance after coming off the bench.

And, after the 2-0 defeat, McGhee revealed: "Louis is going to have minor surgery. He will miss the first three games of the league season."

Motherwell have three more League Cup games in Group F before the start of the Premiership season.

"He should be ready after the international break," added McGhee.
