Portadown have announced the signing of 29-year-old midfielder Stephen Hughes from relegated Warrenpoint Town.

Hughes, whose brother Daniel left Warrenpoint to join Cliftonville last season, has signed a one-year contract with the Shamrock Park club.

Portadown will start the new season 12 points behind their 11 Premiership rivals after being found guilty of paying an amateur player.

Their first match is away to Coleraine on Saturday, 6 August.

Portadown are managed by former Manchester United and Wigan Athletic defender Pat McGibbon who took over from the long-serving Ronnie McFall in March.

"I played under Pat at Newry City so I know what he is all about," new signing Hughes told Ports TV.

"I said I would come down to pre-season training and try it out. After a couple of sessions my mind was made up.

"It is great to sign for a big club like Portadown."
