Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Leeds United

Gary Hooper scores for Sheffield Wednesday
Gary Hooper is now the joint-leading scorer in the Championship with seven goals

Gary Hooper's first-half double helped Sheffield Wednesday to victory over Yorkshire rivals Leeds at Hillsborough.

Both of Hooper's goals were close-range finishes from knockdowns in the box and he could have had a hat-trick, but hit the bar in second-half stoppage time.

Kieran Lee drilled in sweetly from 30 yards for the Owls' third, sealing a first win in four Championship matches.

Leeds, for whom Pierre-Michel Lasogga hit the post, slipped to fifth with their third loss in four league games.

Their defeat was compounded by the loss of defender Pontus Jansson, who had to leave the field on a stretcher in the second half after colliding with team-mate Kalvin Phillips.

Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal, who guided Wednesday to the play-offs in each of the past two seasons, said before the match that he understood the pressure of his position and did not fear losing his job after a relatively slow start to the campaign.

His team responded to defeats by city rivals Sheffield United and managerless Birmingham with an excellent display against one of the Championship's early pacesetters.

But they had to survive an initial onslaught on their goal from Leeds, with Phillips and Ezgjan Alioski heading wide and Kemar Roofe forcing a fine save from goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith in the first 20 minutes.

Once Hooper had turned in Tom Lees' header for Wednesday's opener, the home side assumed control and Steven Fletcher somehow nodded wide from five yards before the Scot provided the headed assist for his strike partner's second of the game.

Hooper has netted seven goals in his past seven appearances for the Owls and is the Championship's joint-leading scorer alongside Bristol City's Bobby Reid and Jarrod Bowen of Hull.

Barry Bannan, who was outstanding in midfield for the hosts, struck the post from 18 yards before a superbly taken third by Lee - who had a first-half effort wrongly ruled out for offside.

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal:

"The performance was a good level against a strong side who have done very well so far.

"What made a big difference in this game is that we scored first. After that, we managed the game very well.

"When you have one goal in the Championship, you have a big advantage. It makes a massive difference in derby matches when emotions are high.

"Gary Hooper did very well and all of the team performed very well."

Leeds head coach Thomas Christiansen:

"In the first half, they had two opportunities and scored. We were too soft in both areas, so we have to improve a lot in that sense.

"We gave too much space. We were defending back instead of defending up, which makes you lose the second balls.

"We spoke about Bannan as being a key player we had to stop, but we were not able to do that."
