Bristol City 0-0 Burton Albion

Bristol City v Burton
Burton Albion kept their third successive Championship away clean sheet against Bristol City

Bristol City missed the chance to go second in the Championship as they were held to a goalless draw by Burton.

The Brewers had lost 4-0 in each of their previous two games at home but defended resolutely to secure their third straight away league clean sheet.

City dominated as Stephen Bywater denied Bobby Reid and Josh Brownhill, while Reid saw an effort disallowed.

Marvin Sordell twice went close for Burton on the break before Marlon Pack fired just wide for City at the death.

Victory would have lifted Bristol City above Wolves into second place, but they still climb to third after extending their unbeaten run in the league to 10 games.

Burton also climb a place to 20th after their third successive goalless draw on their travels.

The Brewers were put under pressure throughout but put bodies on the line all over the field to frustrate their hosts.

Reid was denied by Bywater at his near post early on, and the veteran keeper had to tip Brownhill's effort around the post.

Jamie Paterson curled a free-kick narrowly over the bar and Aden Flint fired over after the break, before Reid saw his shot from 12 yards ruled out for a push on Luke Murphy by a team-mate.

Sordell twice went close for Burton late on as he fired wide on the counter-attack and saw another shot headed clear by Flint with home keeper Frank Fielding beaten.

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol:

"Burton have come, set their stall out, worked very hard and defended the edge of their box very well.

"We've had 75% possession, more corners, more shots, and limited them to pretty much nothing.

"Tactically, we got it completely right. The frustrating thing was when we got in the areas to deliver final ball we just didn't have the quality and we ran out of ideas.

"However, there are many positives - we got a clean sheet, moved a point closer to the top and extended our unbeaten run."

Burton boss Nigel Clough told BBC Radio Derby:

"It was a brilliant defensive performance to come and get a point and a clean sheet against a team that has been flying of late, especially at home.

"It was important that we put a marker down after the last couple of results at home that we have still got a little bit of fight in us and we've not gone just yet."
