Greenock Morton 0-1 Falkirk

Craig Sibbald
Falkirk midfielder Craig Sibbald scored ten goals last season in the Scottish Championship

A first half goal from Craig Sibbald secured all three points for Falkirk against Morton at Cappielow.

The visitors went ahead after 20 minutes as Sibbald's shot found the net from 12 yards following a Louis Longridge corner.

Longridge went close with a shot deflected on to the crossbar, before Ton had efforts cleared off the line.

Second-bottom Falkirk now sit level with eighth-place Dumbarton on 20 points as Morton drop to seventh.

Scoring away from home has been a problem all season for the Bairns, who have hit only seven goals in 10 league trips away from the Falkirk Stadium. The pairing sent out to test Morton of Longridge and Andrew Nelson quickly showed potential to add to that tally and their neat interchanges were a feature of the first half.

Their combination play yielded the corner from which Falkirk took the lead in the 20th minute. Longridge's delivery tempted Derek Gaston off his line but the goalkeeper failed to collect cleanly and the spillage was neatly mopped-up by Sibbald for his first goal of the season, with the ball taking a slight deflection en-route to the net.

Paul Hartley

Falkirk also hit the bar as they looked to extend their lead. Nelson set up Longridge but his shot spun off Thomas O'Ware, past Gaston and off the junction of the bar and post.

Morton did look dangerous when they reached their opponents penalty box. Robert Thomson saw a shot and a header cleared off the line, but the only first-half sighting of main striker Bob McHugh came in stoppage time when visiting keeper Robbie Thomson parried his shot and then gathered before the home side could react.

In the second half, both sides cancelled each other out until Morton changed to a three at the back and committed more players forward. The visitors appeared to retreat, soak up the pressure and were happy to seek a second goal on the counter.

For all their efforts, Morton failed to generate any clear-cut chances and Robbie Thomson would have been impressed by the defence in front of him with Jordan McGhee and Peter Grant resolute at the heart of the The Bairns' defence.

Manager reaction

Morton manager Jim Duffy: "Frustrated is the word I used to the players because we didn't start with a good enough tempo and we allowed Falkirk to get confidence and a bit of momentum.

"We had a lot of pressure, goalmouth scrambles and we had three or maybe four cleared off the line. You have to take one of these chances to get something out of the game.

"I don't think we deserved all three points but we did deserve more than a loss."

Falkirk manager Paul Hartley: "Credit to the players and how they performed today. They had to dig deep to get the result.

"The movement, work-rate and enthusiasm of Louis Longridge and Andrew Nelson to take defenders on and to put people under pressure was pleasing.

"The lads here are digging deep and want to stay in the team, and they are working well just now."
