Rosberg races to maiden pole
- From the section Formula 1
Nico Rosberg takes his maiden pole position and Mercedes' first since 1955 ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit.
The German was half a second quicker than Lewis Hamilton around the 5.451km track, but the McLaren driver will take a five-place grid drop after changing his gearbox, meaning Rosberg starts alongside his team-mate, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, on the front row.
There was also a major shock as reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel struggled for pace in his Red Bull and failed to make it through to the final part of qualifying, meaning he will start the race from 11th on the grid.
