Down boosted their promotion prospects as Donal O'Hare's late goal helped earn them a deserved win over Cavan in the Football League Division 2 game.

The visitors coped better with the wet and windy conditions in the first half as three O'Hare points helped them lead 0-6 to 0-3 at the break.

Cavan levelled at 0-6 to 0-6 and again at 0-8 to 0-8 despite having Ronan Flanagan sent off at Breffni Park.

However, Down's superiority was finally rewarded by O'Hare's 63rd-minute goal.

Kevin McKernan's man-of-the-match display included notching two points while the introduction of Arthur McConville in the second period was also crucial for Jim McCorry's side.

Cavan's Niall McDermott hit the opening point of the match but three O'Hare frees and a score from defender Luke Howard helped Down move three ahead.

McDermott responded with another Cavan point but a Jerome Johnston free and McKernan's first score enabled Down to lead 0-6 to 0-3 at the interval.

Cavan made a fast start to the second half as a point from corner-back Jason McLoughlin and scores from Martin Dunne and McDermott helped them level by the 44th minute.

But Down regrouped by hitting the next two scores as Damien Turley and McKernan provided the finishes.

After McDermott pointed again for Cavan, the home side were reduced to 14 men followed Flanagan's second yellow card.

A Martin Dunne free helped Cavan level but Down hit the crucial score seven minutes from time as good work by McConville set up Mark Poland's initial chance before O'Hare eventually bundled the ball over the line.

There was a suspicion Poland may have handled on the ground but the goal stood as Down went on to record a win that their enterprise warranted.

The win means Down leapfrog Cavan in the Division 2 table as they moved to four points alongside leaders Galway.
