Sports Personalities say 'Big Thank You' to volunteers

Comedian, multi-marathoner and Join In patron Eddie Izzard, was joined by a host of sports stars on the red carpet before the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony in saying a 'Big Thank You' to volunteers from around the country.

Throughout the evening, sports stars and members of the public from across the UK gave the unsung heroes at their local clubs the thanks they deserve during the Big Thank You weekend.

Volunteers received phone calls from: Max Whitlock, Rory McIlroy, Gavin Hastings, the England Women's rugby team, Heather Stanning, Helen Glover, Jo Pavey, Ellie Simmonds, Sir Chris Hoy, Paula Radcliffe, Carl Froch, Charlotte Dujardin, Judy Murray, Steve Cram, Barry McGuigan, Hacker the Dog, Victoria Pendleton, Karl Frampton, Adam Peaty, Kelly Gallagher, Charlotte Evans, Tanni Grey-Thompson and Tom Daley.

Grassroots sport relies on people giving their time and effort. Whether this is coaching a team, administration or making cups of tea, without them sport just wouldn't happen.
