Gareth Maybin retires from the Spanish Open
Gareth Maybin was forced to retire from the Spanish Open after 14 holes because of an unspecified injury.
Maybin was two over par - one over for the day but was only a shot outside the projected cut mark when he opted out.
After starting at the 10th, four birdies on his front nine improved him to one under but he double bogeyed the first and opted out after another bogey at the fifth.
Peter Lawrie is the leading Irishman on four under - four behind Thomas Aiken.
Lawrie shot a level-par 72 while Shane Lowry fired a 73 for two under.
Damien McGrane was way outside the cut mark after adding a 75 to his opening 83.
South Africa Aiken shot a second-successive 68 and was a shot ahead of Spain's Pablo Larrazabal with overnight leader Scott Jamieson among a group on six under.
