Russell Knox claimed his first career win after victory in the PGA Nationwide Tour's Chiquita Classic in Ohio.

The Invernesian won by three strokes to put himself in contention to qualify for the next year's PGA Tour.

The top 25 in the money rankings on the Nationwide Tour will earn PGA Tour cards, and the victory puts Knox into fifth place.

"This is the best day of my life, 100 times over," a delighted Knox told the PGA's website.

The 26-year-old began the final day ahead by one stroke, and posted a -6 round of 66 to coast to victory.

"This is very exciting for me because it's my first trophy. On the mini-tours we just get a cheque," added Knox.

"I knew this was possible. I've played well the last three years since turning pro. I've worked hard and dedicated my whole life to playing professional golf."
