Strong finish helps Hoey to opening 68

Three birdies in his final five holes helps Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey to an opening three-under-par 68 at the Irish Open at Fota Island.

The former Dunhill Links champion is well in contention after day one at the County Cork course, tying for ninth position, four shots behind leader Mikko Ilonen.

"This is always a special tournament with a great buzz. The response of the crowd after I holed a couple of 40-foot putts was great," observed Hoey.
