Former Open champion Darren Clarke concedes that he "couldn't buy a putt" as a first round of one-over-par 73 left him with a battle on his hands to make the cut at St Andrews.
"I hit the ball very nicely and controlled the ball well, but the putts just wouldn't go in. Tee to green I'm very happy with the way I'm striking it," said the 2016 European Ryder Cup captain.
Clarke also commented on the difficulties being experienced by his friend, 14-time major winner Tiger Woods, who posted an opening four-over 76.
"Tiger's working away but he's maybe pushing a little bit too hard. It's a tough game when things aren't going your way," said Clarke.
