Timmy Cockram was Ireland's last-gasp hero against Spain

Timmy Cockram's double helped Ireland to a 3-2 win over Spain and a fifth-place finish in the EuroHockey Nations Championship in Moenchengladbach.

Pau Quemada put the Spanish ahead on 25 minutes on Sunday before Eugene Magee levelled from a penalty corner.

Santi Freixa restored Spain's advantage only for Cockram to clinch victory for the Irish with two late strikes.

The Lisnagarvey player's low drag made it 2-2 and he fired home from a penalty corner to win it in the final minute.

Ireland had secured their top flight status for the 2013 European Championships after hammering Russia 8-2 on Friday.

Goals from John Jermyn, Michael Watt, Mitch Darling, Eugene Magee and Timmy Cockram put Ireland 5-0 up before Platonov pulled a goal back for Russia.

Geoff McCabe restored Ireland's five-goal lead and while Pletskiy replied, Jermyn added two more Irish goals.

While Ireland have missed out on qualifying for the Olympics at these Championships, they will have one more final chance to progress to London 2012 when they compete in a qualification tournament in the New Year.

Only one spot will be on offer at that tournament for which dates and venues have yet to be confirmed.
