Evan Williams retires Grand National veteran State of Play

Welsh horse-racing trainer Evan Williams has decided to retire State of Play after a disappointing showing at the 2012 Grand National.

The 12-year-old gelding has finished in the top four at three Nationals, and won the 2006 Hennessy Gold Cup.

That form prompted Williams to hail State of Play a racing "legend".

But the Vale of Glamorgan-based 50-1 shot fell at the fifth at the 2012 Aintree showpiece and Williams has now decided to call time on his career.
