Moonlight Cloud beats Olympic Glory to deny Frankie Dettori

Dawn Approach

Moonlight Cloud beat the Frankie Dettori-ridden Olympic Glory in a photo finish to win the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville.

The 11-4 winner, under Thierry Jarnet for trainer Freddie Head, denied Dettori his first Group One win since returning from a drugs ban in May.

Intello came third, while 2,000 Guineas winner Dawn Approach finished fifth.

Moonlight Cloud surged clear before Dettori swooped late to challenge on Richard Hannon's 18-1 outsider.

It was a third defeat in four races for Dawn Approach, whose Royal Ascot win was sandwiched by losses in the Derby and at Glorious Goodwood.

"He just wasn't the same racehorse he has been all year," said jockey Kevin Manning.

Trainer Jim Bolger plans to prepare the colt for a run on Champions Day in October.

"We will take him home and freshen him up for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in the autumn," he said.

In Ireland, impressive Royal Ascot winner War Command was a disappointing third as Sudirman won the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh from Big Time.

War Command, trained by Aidan O'Brien, was lengthened to about 20-1 from 6-1 favourite for the Guineas after his defeat.

Meanwhile, Richard Hughes rode five winners from six rides at Windsor on Sunday afternoon.
