Belfast Giants captain Colin Shields is leaving after three years to join French club Morzine-Avoriaz.

Giants general manager Todd Kelman said Scotsman Shields felt it was the right time in his career to make the move.

"Our core of British players is crucial to our success and Colin will be tough to replace," said Kelman.

"But we pride ourselves in showcasing players to European teams and wish Colin every success with his new club next season."

Shields led the Giants in points in 2009/10 and in assists in the season just finished.

He was in his second spell with the Giants, having played with them in the 2005-06 season before heading to the United States to play in the ECHL.

Kelman added: "We are already actively recruiting our team for next season and will have some news on this front soon."
