Scottish round-up: Fife Flyers show fighting spirit

Edinburgh beat west coast rivals Braehead at the weekend

The Elite League table may show Edinburgh Capitals and Fife Flyers in the bottom two places, but their fighting spirit is far from diminished.

The Flyers took three points from a possible four over the weekend - against the top two teams in the league no less - while Edinburgh beat the league's third best at the moment.

For Fife, a 3-2 overtime loss in Belfast on Friday and a dramatic 7-6 win, again in overtime, over Braehead Clan, shows they are roaring back to play-off contention.

And Flyers' coach Todd Dutiaume reserved special praise for associate coach and player Danny Stewart, who scored his 100th Elite League goal with the winner against Clan.

Dutiaume said: "I was delighted for Danny and I don't think he gets the credit he deserves. What a way to mark his milestone.

"We've been in a lot of these tight games and we haven't always got the bounces so it was nice to finally get one against Braehead.

"Any time you take three points from the top two teams in the league, you have to be delighted."

Derek Roehl's opening goal in Northern Ireland was cancelled out by Evan Cheverie before Chris Higgins put the Giants ahead.

Bobby Chaumont's third period leveller took the game to overtime to give Flyers a point, but Calvin Elfring's venomous strike clinched the win.

With that in mind, they took the game to Braehead Clan and won a dramatic match that saw Flyers' Matt Nickerson cop a match ban for excessive roughing.

New signing Ned Luckacevic made his Fife debut after only being announced hours earlier and his third-minute goal set the scene for arguably the game of the season.

As the game approached five minutes from the end, Joel Champagne had Braehead 6-4 up and looking good enough to leave Kirkcaldy with the points.

Jordan Fulton got Fife to within a goal before Chaumont completed his hat-trick against his former team to level the game, before Stewart finished the winner in overtime.

As if that wasn't bad enough for Braehead, they went to Nottingham Panthers on Sunday for the quarter final first leg of the Challenge Cup as well having league points up for grabs.

That first chance of silverware looks all but dead as the current holders romped to an 8-0 annihilation, leaving Clan's weekend in tatters.

A double from Matt Ryan and one from ex-Clan forward Robert Farmer were among the goals as Panthers never looked in danger of losing their grip on the trophy. At least not yet.

Edinburgh Capitals meanwhile were on a four game losing streak going into Sunday's game with third placed Dundee Stars.

Saturday's trip to Hull Stingrays was nothing short of a disaster when they went 3-0 down before Marc Fowley pulled one back in reply.

But that was to be the only high point as a Jereme Tendler hat-trick inspired the Humberside men to a comfortable 7-1 win.

Edinburgh though turned it around at Murrayfield on Sunday, beating Dundee Stars 3-2 to put an end to their horror run.

Tomas Horna and Jade Portwood had the home side 2-0 up after two periods before Mike Wirll pulled one back for the Stars early in the third.

Caps' player-coach Richard Hartmann restored the two-goal lead to seal the points, despite a late Nico Sacchetti consolation.

Murrayfield skipper Martin Cingel was pleased at his team's contrasting fortunes in that 24 hour spell which ended in victory for them.

He said: "We never gave up and it was a hard game on Sunday, but we bounced back well after the heavy loss in Hull and everyone worked hard to turn that around.

"We went to Hull and never got to play our game. They jumped on us and scored an early goal. From there we couldn't recover and we were chasing rainbows.

"But you learn from defeats and even at the age I am now, I still learn so to put the performance in and get the win over Dundee straight away was great for us."
