BBC Sport - Challenge Cup: Belfast Giants overcome Walser controversy to beat Cardiff Devils

Giants win after Walser anthem controversy

The Belfast Giants will take a one-goal lead into the second leg of their Challenge Cup semi-final after beating Cardiff Devils 5-4 in the first game in the Welsh capital.

There was controversy before the puck was dropped when Giants player/coach Derrick Walser began skating around the rink before the end of the Welsh Anthem.

He was given a 10-minute misconduct penalty but after the game apologised for his actions claiming he thought the anthem was coming to an end.

The Giants came from 4-2 down with three third period goals, the winning goal scored by Jim Vandermeer with 56 seconds remaining.

The second leg is at the SSE Arena in Belfast on Wednesday 8 February.
