Matthew Benham, owner of Championship Brentford, bought FC Midtjylland last year and transformed the club to win the Danish League title - the first major trophy in their history.

They are managed by Jess Thorup, the former Denmark Under-21 manager and their squad boasts 13 homegrown players. FC Midtjylland are a greater force since losing 4-2 on aggregate to Manchester City in the Uefa Cup in 2008-09, but they have yet to qualify for the group stage.

Sunderland v Swansea (Sat, 15:00 BST)

Nick Barnes

BBC Newcastle commentator

Here are the notes I'm preparing for Saturday's match with Swansea.

I'm hand-drawing the club crests this season - in previous seasons I've taken the image off the internet - but decided this season to have a go at drawing them.

Nick Barnes
BBC Sport

I start the prep at the beginning of the week - the crests and the previous match stats and then usually on a Thursday, before I see Dick Advocaat (or whoever is head coach is that week) I do the notes for the team that Sunderland is facing next.

I've been doing it this way for the past seven or eight seasons and, on average, a page takes around four or five hours work.

'Stoke can compete with best'

Football

Stoke City have been able to transform their spending power because of the financial riches of the Premier League, says Potters chairman Peter Coates.

Stoke recently broke their transfer record, spending £12m on Inter Milan winger Xherdan Shaqiri, who is one of nine summer arrivals at the club.

"If Stoke City can stay up we get, roughly, an extra £40m - that's a huge chunk of money," Coates said. "We've probably got a larger budget than most teams in Europe and we can compete with the world's top teams."

I'd love to see the contract of a modern-day player; I'll bet that it's far more complex that the one you or I sign when we make our biggest lifetime purchase - a house. Mind you, the money spent on a Premier League footballer would buy several estates, never a single house.

Next up Kevin De Bruyne - what's the betting that deal will be concluded on the last day of the transfer window?

IFA warned over firework

The Irish Football Association has pledged to prevent any repeat of an incident which saw a firework thrown on to the pitch at Windsor Park after receiving a warning from disciplinary chiefs.

Monk wants to keep his squad together before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month. "Not for sale" would be his response to any interest in winger Jefferson Montero, with Michu the only player likely to leave.

Three seasons ago he was one of the hottest properties in the league, now his future remains unclear as, despite reported interest from Celtic, Monk says there is "nothing concrete" on offer for the Spaniard.
