"Part of the pressure is to deal with it and to stay calm, stay controlled and realise they have got four pool games, there is plenty of time and to start well," added Carling.

"I think there is huge pressure on England being the home World Cup for them and also being in the hardest pool the World Cup has ever seen.

"It’s important they start in a controlled composed way which will give them a lot of confidence.”

The Rugby World Cup starts on Friday.

What the manager says - Steve McClaren

West Ham Utd v Newcastle Utd (20:00 BST)

"We feel we're establishing a platform. We've seen evidence of that but we've been down to 10 men in two of the four games.

"We need the breaks. We need to play better football, create more chances and score more goals and the results will come."

Baird out after head injury

Derby captain Chris Baird is expected to miss two games after being knocked unconscious in a clash of heads during their win over Preston.

The 33-year-old needed 11 minutes of treatment, but was later given the all-clear after scans.

"Every day the doctor is checking on his symptoms. Every day he has to show he is symptom-free, so it is a day-by-day process," said boss Paul Clement.

Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll is in contention for West Ham after recovering from a knee injury, but Alex Song, who has rejoined on loan, is out with an ankle problem. The Hammers' trio of new signings, Victor Moses, Michail Antonio and Nikica Jelavic, are all available.

Newcastle will be without striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is serving a three-match suspension. Defender Paul Dummett is also out after suffering a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Commentator's notes

West Ham Utd v Newcastle Utd (20:00 BST)

Jonathan Pearce

BBC football commentator

Upton Park has been blanketed with sentimentality as it enters the final season. The players have looked stifled by it all, starting with defeats by Bournemouth and Leicester like shuffling sleepwalkers.

Slaven Bilic

But the old ground really wakes up under floodlights. Now West Ham's home form might match their away successes.

With just one goal in eight away league games, Newcastle lack potency. They've averaged just over 30% of possession in their last three games.

If West Ham start well, the visitors might not see enough of the ball to get back into it.

Change of mood

Manchester City v Juventus (Tues, 19:45 BST)

Sergio Aguero

How quickly things change in football. A week ago, Manchester City had Sergio Aguero fully fit with Wilfried Bony and Kelechi Iheanacho in reserve, but going into their first Champions League game against Juventus, Aguero is injured and Iheanacho, the hero at Crystal Palace, was not registered in the European squad.

On the other hand, the return of David Silva and Raheem Sterling is a huge boost and, although Manuel Pellegrini would not confirm that Kevin De Bruyne will start against the Italians, it looks likely that he will.

What the manager says - Slaven Bilic

West Ham Utd v Newcastle Utd (20:00 BST)

"We have to start picking up points at home, and I'm very confident because our reactions in the second halves of both games were good, and if we can do it from the start and cut out the silly mistakes, we will be alright."

Lawro's prediction

West Ham Utd v Newcastle Utd (20:00 BST)

Mark Lawrenson

Former Liverpool defender

Nobody is doubting the ability of Newcastle boss Steve McClaren - but now it is a case of him finding his best team and knitting it together. West Ham are proving very difficult to predict at the moment, winning away at Arsenal and Liverpool but losing both games at home, so I am probably best off going for a draw.

Simple Verse hearing delayed

Horse racing

Frank Keogh

BBC Sport

An appeal against the decision to demote Simple Verse to second place in the St Leger has been delayed and will now be held next week.

The British Horseracing Authority hearing had been earmarked for Thursday, but has been put back to tie in with the availability of lawyers.

Bondi Beach, who passed the post second at Doncaster on Saturday, was awarded the race after a stewards’ inquiry into interference during the closing stages.

“The hearing will now be held on either Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 or Friday 25 September based on counsel’s availability” said a BHA spokesman said.

Overton claims timely wicket

Sussex 162-5 v Somerset - tea, day one

BBC Somerset's Anthony Gibson at Hove: "The wicket of Ed Joyce, caught down the leg side off Jamie Overton off the last ball before tea for a well-made 83, turned what had been an evenly-balanced session very definitely Somerset's way.

"In between the showers, their seamers had plugged away, picking up the wickets of Chris Nash and Luke Wright, but it was the extra pace of Overton that first unsettled the Sussex captain and then removed him."

Anderson returns with key wicket

Surrey 176-3 v Lancashire - tea, day one

BBC Radio Manchester's Scott Read at Old Trafford:

"Jimmy Anderson bowling to Kumar Sangakkara one highlight of what's been an engrossing day's play so far at Old Trafford.

"The England bowler was brought straight back into the attack when the Sri Lankan batsman came out to the middle and he was tempted into a driving Anderson who found the outside edge. The game feels about level at tea."

Adams wicket boosts Yorkshire

Hampshire 153-3 v Yorkshire - tea, day one

BBC Radio Leeds' Dave Callaghan at the Ageas Bowl:

"It has been an even contest so far between relegation-threatened Hampshire and champions Yorkshire.

"At 55-0 at lunch, Hampshire were reasonably happy, but two wickets went down quickly in the afternoon as Jack Brooks accounted for Michael Carberry and James Vince was clean bowled by Tim Bresnan".
