Football

Leicester City will miss out on signing Sampdoria striker Eder, Italian paper Corrierre dello Sport reports.

Inter Milan is apparently the 28-year-old's preferred destination.

And for all those thinking the Foxes were close to signing Southampton's Graziano Pelle, the Southern Echo says offers for the striker will be turned down. Rumours have it that Juventus and Lazio are leading the line to sign the striker, though...

'Fantastic for women's football'

Women have been included in Fifa 16, the first time this has happened in the game's history...

"I didn't realise how big it would be. It came as a surprise. To be included was fantastic for women's football. After the year we have had, with the success of the World Cup, it topped it all off to be included in something so big.

"The girls play Fifa. When we are in the Euro qualifiers, if there is a console at St George's Park the girls play and fill a bit of time up. Lucy Bronze or Gemma Davison are probably the best, I think."

Swansea head coach Francesco Guidolin says the club are close to completing a deal for 26-year-old Chievo striker Alberto Paloschi.

“I asked my chairman [Huw Jenkins] if it was a possibility. I like him,” said Guidolin.

“Paloschi was my player when we worked together at Parma. He was a promising player. He is a good player, a good guy. I think he is important for us and can help the team to have results and score many goals, I hope.

“I think he’s a modern player. He can play well in the Premier League because he is strong.”

Slimani, Yarmolenko for Everton?

Football

Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer

Everton are still coming to terms with the disappointment of their Capital One Cup semi-final defeat against Manchester City - so might struggling manager Roberto Martinez go into the transfer market before Monday's deadline to lift the spirits?

The word coming out of France is that the Toffees are showing an interest in Sporting Lisbon's Algerian forward Islam Slimani. The 27-year-old has attracted attention from around Europe with his fine form this season - scoring 20 goals in 29 games.

He has been rated in the £20m bracket, which may prove too rich for Everton's liking.

Everton have long been linked with Dynamo Kiev's Andriy Yarmolenko but he would command a fee in excess of £20m and it is unlikely the Ukrainians will sell while they are still in the Champions League.

Dyke will not seek FA re-election

Football

In a statement made to the FA board this morning Dyke said he believes the association "will need more of a conciliatory figure than me to build on what has been achieved".

He added: "During January as work on options for governance reform crystalised it became clear to all of us that there wouldn’t be a unanimous position on governance reform in the board.

"I had already decided that if no reform was possible I was going to leave anyway this summer, a position I had shared with a number of colleagues.

"What I now see is that even if we get the reform through (which will be a difficult and divisive process although essential), I am probably not the best person to pick up the pieces following the inevitable discord."

Townsend 'aiming to get fans off their seats'

BBC Newcastle Sport presenter

Andros Townsend has been presented by Newcastle United after completing a £12m move from Tottenham.

The 24-year-old England winger has signed a five-year deal with the Magpies.

"It's a fantastic club, with great traditions," he said. "You've seen the signings Newcastle have made and players they already have so if we can pull together, the future's bright.

"I'm aiming to get the fans off their seats, make things happen, take players on... I spent most of my life at Spurs so to leave was difficult but it's the right choice. Can't wait to run out at St James' Park."

'Not a replacement for the real thing'

Football

Tom Greenwood

Head of partnerships at the Premier League

"EA effectively allows a co-existence between the real-life matches and the virtual world. It extends the match-day in many ways. I don't think it's a replacement.

"An example of how it co-exists very well is if you look at the graph of players playing Fifa and you see that it flatlines during the first-half of very big games and at half-time there is a massive spike where people are playing with those clubs."

Manchester United news conference

Derby County v Manchester United (Fri, 19:55 GMT)

Simon Stone

BBC Sport

Louis van Gaal came out fighting at Carrington.

The Dutchman evidently doesn't care for the speculation about his future. He is none too impressed either by what he regards as incorrect stories over a resignation offer he is said to have made after Saturday's defeat by Southampton.

At such times, it is possible to believe Van Gaal has it within him to fashion a winning team from the squad at his disposal.

But in the previous answer he provided a clue as to why his reign seems stuck in a fog of misplaced theory.

Given the fairly straightforward opportunity to say thanks to Manchester United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward for his support, Van Gaal instead said it didn't provide as much motivation to fight as it would if he knew he was approaching his final game.

Like much of Van Gaal's time at Old Trafford, it didn't make a lot of sense.

Manchester United news conference

Derby County v Manchester United (Fri, 19:55 GMT)

Question: Are you going to carry on fighting?

Louis van Gaal: "I am always fighting."

Question: Were you maybe not expecting this level of scrutiny? Have you seen this at Barcelona, Bayern Munich?

Van Gaal: "I have always faith."

Manchester United news conference

Derby County v Manchester United (Fri, 19:55 GMT)

Intriguing from Louis van Gaal. Part resignation to the growing speculation surrounding his future, part defiance, part simmering contempt.

Here's a bit more on that exchange where he's talking about what might happen if his side loses against Derby in the FA Cup.

Question: The FA Cup saved Alex Ferguson in a tricky spell. Could it be the saviour for you as well?

Van Gaal: "Of course. But when you lose it is more worse. That I have predicted already before the game against Southampton. Now I cannot lose any more - then for the fourth time that I have been sacked. Maybe then you have written the truth because sometimes it happens."

Question: You do feel it has to be a win then?

Van Gaal: "It is the FA Cup. You have to win. If you lose you are out."
