Redknapp in talks with Derby

Football

Pat Murphy

BBC Radio 5 live

"Talks are continuing between Harry Redknapp and Derby County over a proposal to take him on as a coaching advisor till the end of the season.

"It had been reported that Redknapp was to be appointed as Derby's Director of Football but discussions about the job title haven't been a factor as negotiations continue about whether Redknapp will actually join the club.

"I understand Redknapp is also mulling over an offer to manage the Jordanian national side. He has told Derby that and talks will continue with the club tonight."

Arsene Wenger says he is still "100%" dedicated to Arsenal.

He added: "I am even more motivated than the day I arrived.

When you are a long time somewhere, people always question about your duration.

"I don't question my dedication, it is 100%. I give more time to my club now than when I arrived."

More from Arsene Wenger on Arsenal's disappointing season: "We have gone through a disappointing spell and it is important to remain calm and strong."

"It will be a big boost for the rest of the season if we have a great game tomorrow.

"We fight to win trophies and at the moment we are not favourites to deliver that this season.

"But no matter how big the challenge is, the Premiership is quite open despite what people think and in the Champions League we have a very small chance to give our best tomorrow."

Arsenal news conference

Barcelona v Arsenal (Wed, 19:45 GMT)

Arsenal will need to score at least two goals in the Nou Camp to have any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.

Wenger said: "We are in a position where we don't have to calculate too much. We know we have to attack and score goals.

"Our approach was not bad in the first leg but we lost our balance and got caught.

"We have won everywhere in Europe, but not here yet. The players are united to give a strong performance."

Walsh/Mullins/Ricci hattrick

"Congratulations to the Ricci/Mullins/Walsh axis for chalking up a memorable hatrick, but, with respect, I think it has to be considered good news for the sport that they didn’t prove completely invincible in the day’s Grade One races, with Min being turned over spectacularly by Altior in the Supreme Novices Hurdle.

"It gave a message to their opponents that despite the extraordinary level of expensively-assembled talent at Mullins HQ things don’t always go right even for them.Phew. Annie Power and Vroum Vroum Mag were fantastic but Douvan’s display was even better."

Villa's cull begins

Football

Pat Murphy

BBC Radio 5 live

"The cull of significant figures at Aston Villa's football department started today with the announcement that the sporting director Hendrik Almstadt has left the club with immediate effect.

"Almstadt's departure is a blow to Tom Fox, the chief executive who brought him from his old club, Arsenal last summer. Despite a commercial background, Fox brought Almstadt in to oversee player recruitment and he has struggled to make an impact.

"I understand the previous manager Tim Sherwood was unimpressed by a figure with no playing background operating in an area of player recruitment, while Remi Garde was equally sceptical.

"This decision underlines the determination of the new chairman Steve Hollis to carry out a root and branch investigation into all aspects of the club and it's the first time the playing side has been altered since his arrival in January.

"The club stresses there will be a replacement for Almstadt but today's decision will increase pressure on both Fox and Paddy Riley, the head of scouting and recruitment."

Mane red card rescinded

Football

Southampton forward Sadio Mane's red card against Stoke has been overturned following an appeal.

A Football Association commission ruled the player should not have been sent off during Saturday's 2-1 victory.

Referee Lee Mason dismissed the forward in added time following an aerial challenge with Erik Pieters.

Pellegrini not getting carried away

Man City v Dynamo Kiev (19:45 GMT)

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini
AFP

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini isn't counting any chickens yet, despite his side's 3-1 lead from the first-leg.

"The most important thing is to know we have not yet qualified. We play against a team who know how to play this type of game,"

"We're not going to play with the score we got in Kiev, we're just going to say it's 0-0 and try to win the game."

'We can win the Champions League

Man City v Dynamo Kiev (19:45 GMT)

Joe Hart
AFP

It is a big night for Manchester City as they look to advance into the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time. They hold a 3-1 lead over Dynamo Kiev after the first leg.

But goalkeeper Joe Hart thinks his team can go a lot further - and win the Champions League.

"It's going to be difficult. It's a really difficult tournament, but we've got to believe we can win it otherwise there's no point in turning up," said the England goalkeeper.

"You could look at it as pressure, but it's something really exciting.

"I can only speak for myself, but it's really exciting being in this situation, going into the last-16 game with a good option of going through, doing something I haven't done before and creating history for this club."

'The chosen one'

Barcelona v Arsenal (Wed, 19:45 GMT)

Luis Enrique

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has hailed Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger as a "chosen one" - despite the ongoing speculation as to his future.

Ahead of the Champions League second leg round-of-16 tie, and talking about Wenger's near two decades at the London club, Enrique said: "It means he is a very good coach, no one doubts about that and only the chosen ones can be such a long time in one club - it is because of their good quality.

"I really don't have a deep knowledge to assess the situation of Mr Wenger, but every time there are more coaches out there and more competition and possibilities - the number of teams is always the same but there are more coaches,.

"That is why it is difficult to be 20 years in the same position, and that is why he has done a good job and is at a good level."

Scotland will be without forwards David Denton and Jonny Gray for their final Six Nations match against Ireland.

Gray has been ruled out by the Scotland medical team after a scan showed the lock had suffered a partial tear to a pectoral muscle during Sunday's win against France.

And Denton has returned to Bath for further treatment on the groin problem the back-row forward suffered ahead of Scotland's previous victory in Italy.

Stand-off Finn Russell suffered concussion during Sunday's win over France and his condition is being monitored ahead of Saturday's clash in Dublin.

BreakingAnnie Power wins the Champion Hurdle

Cheltenham Festival

It was heartbreak last year at Cheltenham for Annie Power, but not this time. The favourite, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Ruby Walsh, wins by five lengths to win the Champion Hurdle.

Annie Power looked on course for a win at Cheltenham last year in the OLBG Mares Hurdle until falling at the last and owner Rich Ricci is in tears when grabbed by BBC Radio 5 live.

"It's just spectacular," says Ricci. "Sport offers such a chance for redemption, it's brilliant."

Trainer Willie Mullins adds: "That's what racing is about. I thought it was fantastic, a superb performance from the mare. It was Ruby's plan and he told me what he was going to do and he did it."
