'Edge to the atmosphere'

Euro 2016: England v Wales (14:00 BST)

England fan
AFP

From BBC News' James Reevell:

The rain is hammering down here, but it’s not stopping English fans from drinking in the square outside the station – one of yesterday’s flashpoints where CS gas was first used by French police.

Riot police are vigilant but relaxed, keeping a distance from the fans as they sing and drink.

The atmosphere is similar to yesterday, people coming to Lille to have fun but with an edge that is not common when attending games in England.

For the most part, fans are disappointed with the trouble yesterday – blaming a minority. Lots of them don’t have tickets so will just stay in the city to watch the game.

Hodgson sees Russia result put in context

Euro 2016: England v Wales (14:00 BST)

Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at Stade Bolllaert, Lens

England manager Roy Hodgson looked shocked when he was informed that Slovakia were leading Russia 2-0 while he was busy conducting a media briefing in Lens.

"Is that true?" was his response and Slovakia went on to win 2-1.

What was also true was that Slovakia's win put England's 1-1 draw with the Russians into perspective - and not in a good way.

England have used the performance against Russia, - this was a good performance but a bad result effectively, as a comfort blanket ahead of today's meeting with Wales..

What is clear now is that they failed to beat a very poor Russian team that now increasingly resembles the very weak link in  their group.

When we tallied up the predictions this morning, 40% had gone for 2-1 England, the clear winner.

A 1-1 draw was second with 15%, while less than 10% of people went for a Wales win. Don't they know the dragon is roaring?

Talk is cheap...

Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at Stade Boellaert, Lens

This was the underlying message from England manager Roy Hodgson at some sideswipes from the Welsh camp, and Gareth Bale in particular, this week.

Bale, with his tongue in his cheek for some of the time it should be stressed, claimed the headlines by suggesting Wales have more passion that England and none of Hodgson's team would make the Welsh line-up.

It is fair to say Hodgson was less than impressed by some justified questions on the subject - and at least the talking stops here in rainy Lens this afternoon.

One observation from these last two days in Lens. There is huge confidence in and around this Wales squad.

Britain's world number 84 Kyle Edmund has been given a walkover into the quarter-finals of Queen's Club after his scheduled last 16 opponent Paul-Henri Matthieu with a wrist injury.

This means the all-British encounter between defending champion Andy Murray and Aljaz Bedene has been brought forward to 13:15 BST, weather permitting.

And the winner of that match will face Edmund in the last eight on Friday.

It will be the first quarter-final clash between two British players at Queen’s in the Open era.

You can watch today's action at Queen's on BBC Two, the Red Button, Connected TV and the BBC Sport website.

Your combined starting XI

Paul Fletcher

BBC Sport in Paris

We've been asking you to pick your combined team from the England and Wales squads at Euro 2016.

So far there have been 130,000 selections, with Gareth Bale the most popular pick with 1250,000, Joe Hart is second and Dele Alli third.

In total, there are eight Englishmen in the team and three Welsh - with Ashley Williams and Aaron Ramsey in addition to Bale.

Wayne Rooney is the 11th most popular pick - but Jamie Vardy is closing fast and now just 15,000 behind.

You can still pick yours using the team selector tool.

Wales have the ascendancy - Hartson

Euro 2016: England v Wales (14:00 BST)

John Hartson

Ex-Wales striker and BBC pundit John Hartson believes his countrymen have "the ascendancy" going into their Euro 2016 Group B match with England.

Wales won their opening match 2-1 against Slovakia while England drew 1-1 with Russia.

"There is a feel-good factor. You could see that from little snippets of training. They looked very relaxed, for the first time I can remember," he told BBC Radio 5 live.

"For the first time I can remember there is a real air of confidence in this Welsh group. For the first time we feel we can beat England."

Hartson then puffed out his chest and really went for it.

He declared: "There will be millions in Wales and millions in England that will back you to get a result. You are not playing for yourself today. You are playing for your country, your heritage, your father, your grandfather, your children."

Must-win for England - Shearer

Euro 2016: England v Wales (14:00 BST)

Alan Shearer

Former England captain Alan Shearer says today's game against Wales is a "must-win" for Roy Hodgson's side.

"They don't want to be going into their last game against Slovakia needing to win to qualify," he told BBC Radio 5 live.

"England have to win and have to perform but it will be a hell of a tough game."

BBC pundit Shearer is expecting Wales to adopt a "cagey" approach.

He added: "A draw would be a great result for Wales. It would see them through, which would be absolutely fantastic for Wales.

"They will be full of confidence and rightly so.

"I think they will sit back, keep it tight and play it cagey and if they can nick something then so be it."

Another quick interruption...

George Ford (pictured) and Jack Nowell return to the England starting XV for Saturday's second Test against Australia in Melbourne.

Bath fly-half Ford was a replacement for Luther Burrell in England's 39-28 win in the first Test, while Nowell comes in for Marland Yarde.

Ford starts at number 10, with Owen Farrell moving to inside-centre and Burrell dropping out.

"We've picked a 23 to get the job done," England coach Eddie Jones said.
