EFL Trophy draw 'leaves bad taste'

Steve Kavanagh, chief executive at Southend United, has said that today's EFL Trophy draw has "left a bad taste in the mouth" after six clubs rejected the chance to play Academy teams in the tournament.

Clubs in the English Football League voted in favour of 16 Academy teams playing in this season's EFL Trophy, but six sides, including Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham, rejected the invitations with their places taken by Academy teams from Championship clubs.

"The Premier League teams that asked for it have pulled out and that leads to a bad taste," Kavanagh told BBC Radio 5 live.

"We were led to believe we could have drawn West Ham at the Olympic Stadium, but they were not in the same part of the draw. We have said we will try to do something for you (the Premier League clubs) but it has been thrown back in our faces."

Celtic equaliser

The final major of 2016 gets underway at Baltusrol on Thursday - and it looks likely to do so under hot and humid conditions here in New Jersey.

We're expecting to be over 30 degrees celcius when play begins, but Englishman Andrew 'Beef' Johnston says he's not too worried by the forecast.

"I like the heat, I much prefer playing in this to the cold weather." he told me earlier.

"Yesterday I was out all day and then went back to where we're staying, played basketball and went in the pool. I like it, man."

I've been speaking to English golfer Andrew Johnston ahead of the 98th US PGA Championship at Baltusrol in New Jersey, which starts on Thursday.

The man known as 'Beef' has become something of a cult figure in recent weeks and says his new found fame is a "learning curve".

"At The Open I'd come off and maybe sign five or 10 it's more like 40, 50, 60." said the 27-year-old.

"Don't get me wrong, I love spending time and signing stuff and I think that is really important, but you have to find that balance."

Astana 1-0 Celtic

Celtic are still trailing Astana 1-0 in the Champions League qualifying third round first leg.

There is just over half an hour left in Kazakhstan.

Decision to stay at Stoke 'comes from the heart'

Some quotes from Stoke forward Marko Arnautovic, who agreed a new four-year deal with the club earlier today.

He writes on Instagram: "I am proud and thrilled to finally let you know that I am going to stay a Potter and will continue playing with my team and for my fantastic fans.

"I suppose sometimes it takes a bit longer to make the right decision and this one comes from my heart. My family and I could not be happier. Can't wait for the season to begin."

'1-0 defeat would be a decent result'

HT: Astana 1-0 Celtic

Alasdair Lamont

BBC Sport Scotland

Not a disastrous scoreline for Celtic at the interval but they have fallen out of the game since going behind, while the home side have looked stronger and more confident.

If not for Craig Gordon, the Kazakhs would be at least another goal ahead. If Celtic can finish the game with the scoreline as it is, that would be a decent result on the balance of play so far.

Your thoughts on a potential winter break in the Premier League

We asked you whether there should be a winter break in the Premier League, and 57% of you said there should be.

Here are some of your comments on the matter.

Joe Perry: Winter break every other season to rest for major tournaments. Keep the Xmas schedule the next. Best of both worlds.

Andrew Neill: Winter break a good idea except where would the 2/3 weeks come from? Shorter summer? Less time between games? Lose a cup?

Greg Thomas: Games evenly spread out across a season or two halves of Sat-Tues-Sat football? I don't see why it's beneficial!

This little piggy went to

A pig called Peggy has become the new unofficial mascot of non-league side Stockport County.

County’s senior board advisor Steve Bellis, stuck for a pig sitter, decided to take Peggy along to the club’s friendly with Wigan Athletic’s under-21s on Tuesday.

The animal, a rescue pig born with a cleft palate, sat in the directors’ box at Edgeley Park as National League North side County won 2-1.

Bellis told the Manchester Evening News: “I couldn’t find a sitter, and I couldn’t miss the match, so I thought I’d risk it and take her.

“You’re not allowed to take dogs, but it doesn’t say anything about pigs. She was the star of the night, everyone loved her. And she must be a lucky mascot, because County won."

Attendance is confirmed over the tannoy as '412 plus a Piglet'. Don't ask about the piglet, I don't know either.

Twins at the double at Carrow Road

Let's face it, pre-season friendlies are not always the most memorable occasions, but when was the last time you saw a set of twins line up...against another set of twins?

Last night's campaign warm-up at Carrow Road featured exactly that as Jacob and Josh Murphy of Norwich City shared the pitch with Coventry City's Dion and Devon Kelly-Evans.

The Canary boys took the spoils with Josh scoring in Norwich's 3-0 win.

It's 'discrimination'

President Vladimir Putin has said the exclusion of Russian track-and-field athletes from the Rio Olympics over doping allegations was discrimination and that a political campaign had been waged against Russian sportspeople.

Putin, who was addressing members of Russia's Olympic team in the Kremlin, said that the absence of some Russian sportspeople from the Olympics would damage international sport as well as the Olympics.

“The other sportsmen understand that the quality of their medals will be different," he said, adding that the Games would be "less of a spectacle".
