'Celtic can cope with Champions League pressure'

Celtic v Hapoel Be'er Sheva (19:45 BST)

Richard Wilson

BBC Scotland

Brendan Rodgers is confident Celtic can cope with the pressure of the Champions League play-off against Hapoel Beer Sheva and reach the group stage.

The Scottish champions host the Israeli side in Wednesday's first leg.

Celtic have lost at the play-off stage in the last two seasons, consigning them to the Europa League group stage.

"We're very calm but we understand that there'll be moments when we have to cope with the pressure, I see no reason why the players can't," said Rodgers.

'Gomez set for Wolfsburg move'

Latest transfer gossip

According to Kicker, Germany striker Mario Gomez could be set to leave Italian club Fiorentina for Bundesliga side Wollfsburg.

The 31-year-old forward scored 26 goals on loan in Turkey with Besiktas last season, but has said he will not return because of the "political situation" in the country.

In July an attempted army coup took place in Turkey with 161 civilians and police killed.

Garner to have Rangers medical

Preston North End manager Simon Grayson expects striker Joe Garner to have a medical at Rangers this week.

Garner, 28, did not feature in Preston's squad for Tuesday's 1-0 home defeatby Derby County.

Earlier in the week, Grayson said the player was free to join the Ibrox club after a bid had been made.

"I expect him to have a medical in the next 24 hours or so," said Grayson after North End's Championship loss to Derby.

Balotelli to Wolves?

Latest transfer gossip

Mario Balotelli could move to... Wolves? It's not as totally mad as it sounds. Sort of. I'm confident you can accept the idea as a distant possibility without digging too deeply into the Italian's reputation for bizarre misadventure.

Various people are drawing this conclusion because of Balotelli's recent reported conversations with Jose Mourinho - who is said to have given his former Inter Milan protege some career advice.

The key connection here is Jorge Mendes. Mourinho's agent is a well connected guy and has links to Wolves' new owners.

They've got Walter Zenga as manager now, have signed a Benfica midfielder, an Iceland striker, Congo's captain... So.... Balotelli next?

I'm not having him going to Port Vale though.

A last word from Claude Puel: "Paul Pogba is another good player, but only 11 can play. It's important that we play our game and not concentrate on the other players.

"It's important for the future to work step-by-step every time. To play against every opponent and to play good games every three days when the Europa League arrives. I have a good feeling with this squad."

More from Claude Puel, who's asked about the speculation linking defender Jose Fonte with Manchester United.

"It is just a rumour. Jose is our captain, there is no problem with Jose. [It is] just strange to see this rumour, just before the game against United.

"It's a possibility it comes from United. There is no problem with Jose. He is a very good professional. It's important to have him with us and I hope against United."

Southampton boss Claude Puel's English is pretty good, but he still relies on all the questions to be translated first. You can imagine his pronunciation of Ryan Bertrand is rather guttural. Panic in the front row. It's team news first.

"Just Ryan Bertrand cannot play this game. Still he has a little injury and he could not take part in training this week."

Born in 2000...

There's been a lot of talk about Fulham's 16-year-old left-back Ryan Sessegnon. Depending on where you're reading, Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool are all reported to be interested in the player.

Last night he made his senior debut in a 1-1 draw with Leeds - and his manager was certainly impressed.

"He is a very good project of the football club, he needs to continue to keep working hard, in this way we have to be careful about him," said Slavisa Jokanovic.

"For his debut he offered many, many, many quality things during the game. I don't want to say he is a kid, but he is doing work with adult people and I don't find a big difference between them."

Baird retires from international duty

Northern Ireland defender Chris Baird has confirmed his retirement from international football to concentrate on his club career with Derby County.

The 34-year-old won 79 caps and was part of manager Michael O'Neill's squad at the Euro 2016 finals in France.

He played his final game for Northern Ireland in their opening game of the tournament, a defeat by Poland in Nice.

"It was a tough decision because I have enjoyed every single minute that I have played for Northern Ireland," he said.

"I am not getting any younger and I feel it is the right thing to do at this stage."

Israel's answer to Ranieri?

Celtic v Hapoel Be'er Sheva (19:45 BST)

Liam McLeod

BBC Sport Scotland

Barak Bakhar will not be a name familiar to Scottish football's fervent followers. At least not yet.

Bakhar leads his Hapoel Beer Sheva side to Celtic Park on Wednesday for the first leg of their play-off tie with the sole intention of dragging the unheralded club into their first ever Champions League group stage.

It is not something he is just hoping to do - he expects to. And that does not appear to be beyond the popular 36-year-old from Haifa.

While Claudio Ranieri was making global headlines for his odds-defying English Premier League coronation with Leicester City, Bakhar was doing something similar in Israel.

And Greg Luer, and Greg Luer, and Greg Luer...

This is an odd one. It's been a rather turbulent summer at Hull, who've been without a manager since Steve Bruce resigned after falling out with vice-chairman Ehab Allam.

They haven't signed anyone since returning to the top flight -  but have they spent all the new TV money on a sophisticated cloning programme instead?

I say that because the Hull squad page over on the Premier League website has about 12 Greg Luers...

Not convinced? You can come up with your own theory behind the mystery on Reddit's football pages, where I stumbled across it. Well done to the spotter out there.

.

"It's David v Goliath, it's Rocky. This club has come from nowhere."

Dundalk FC captain Stephen O'Donnell is explaining how the Irish side went from playing before a crowd of 226 to the brink of the Champions League.

Just four years after nearly going bust, on Wednesday (19:45 BST) they will play Polish champions Legia Warsaw in front of more than 30,000 fans at the national stadium in Dublin.

Victory in the two-legged play-off would put the League of Ireland club into the group stages alongside teams like Barcelona and Manchester City, and seal a football fairytale.

Dundalk aim to take a step closer to becoming the first Irish side to reach the Champions League group stage when they face Legia Warsaw on Wednesday.

The play-off qualifying round first leg will take place at Dublin's Aviva Stadium in front of some 25,000 fans.

Dundalk have already banked over £4m for their European exploits which included the second-round victory over Belarusian champions BATE Borisov.

A Champions League group stage berth would yield approximately £8m more.
