Joseph Schooling's win over his childhood idol Michael Phelps in the 100m butterfly swimming race meant he could take home Singapore's first ever Olympic gold medal.

And just look at the welcome the 21-year-old received when he returned home.

But he wasn't the only athlete to win the first ever Olympic gold for their country.

'Benteke is no Messi'

Football

Crystal Palace defender Damien Delaney says club record £27m signing Christian Benteke should not be treated as a saviour.

"We're not signing [Lionel] Messi, he's a good player but he's not a player who is going to get the ball and make things happen," Delaney, 35, tells the Evening Standard.

"He brings a presence, he's a handful, but Connor Wickham is as well. It's time we stop talking about things and go and win games."

Benteke, 25, joined Palace on Saturday from Liverpool.

Olympics

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have congratulated Team GB on their success at Rio 2016.

"London 2012 was a hard act to follow, but you have made the entire country proud of everything you have accomplished," the royals said in a statement. "We all know that this success does not come easy and is the culmination of years of hard work, passionate commitment, sheer grit and determination."

Britain won 67 medals at the games - two more than the remarkable haul in London four years ago.

"I over-exaggerated"

Olympics

Ryan Lochte

So if you have missed the story on Ryan Lochte, here is what happened:

Lochte, 32, had claimed that he and a group of three other US swimmers had been robbed at a petrol station.

He and the other swimmers were returning by taxi from a club in the early hours of the morning, according to the swimmer's version of events, when they were robbed at gunpoint by men who forced the vehicle to pull over.

But CCTV footage contradicted that story, showing the men had vandalised the petrol station.

"I wasn't lying to a certain extent," he said in an apology. "I over-exaggerated what was happening to me."

'We cannot condone his behaviour'

How to cope with life after Olympic success

The World at One

BBC Radio 4

After training so hard for Olympic glory, many athletes have to return to the humdrum of every day life.

Cath Bishop won the silver medal in rowing at Athens in 2004. She worked at the Foreign Office for 13 years.

As she tells Martha Kearney, the best approach once you stop being an athlete is to have a plan "so you don't wake up in the morning thinking why am I getting up?"

On the 2-0 defeat at Burnley on Saturday: "I lost a few games in my life, and I accept that I will lose a few more in future. You can lose a game. We have to stay calm. Development never works like you actually want it to, you have to take the knocks sometimes."
