Wayne Rooney

Marcus Rashford went close but Wayne Rooney remains England's youngest goalscorer. He netted against Macedonia aged 17 years and 317 days. He now has 53 goals, that's more than anyone, ever.

How many more can he get now?

Rooney's struggles

Slovenia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

Wayne Rooney admits his game is in "a difficult period" as a result of being on the bench for Manchester United but vows to keep on doing the right things to attempt to get things back on track.

Asked if he's surprised to be on the bench for England he says: "It's football. A time comes when you are not the first name on the team sheet. As far as I'm concerned, all I can do is keep working hard.

"I think people are entitled to their opinions but I have said many times the ones I listen to are coaches, team-mates and those close to me. People on the outside can say what I want, it's not something I'm not too fussed about."

England captain Wayne Rooney: "It's football. He (Southgate) has got 23 players to select form. I've played 13 years non-stop for England and given everything and the time comes when you are not the first name on the teamsheet.

"It is a chance for other players.

"All I can do is keep working hard and be ready for when I am needed."

Rooney backs Henderson

Slovenia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

Wayne Rooney backs Jordan Henderson as captain: "I'm positive. Of course I want to play but I'm in a positive frame of mind and ready to come on if needed. Hopefully we can win the game and I don't have to come on to help us win it. I understand it's a difficult decision for Gareth and respect it.

"I think Jordan is a fantastic leader. He has taken a difficult job from Steven Gerrard at Liverpool and grown into the position. He has great leadership qualities and he deserves his chance. It will be an incredibly proud moment for him and his family."

Slovenia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

England interim manager Gareth Southgate: "It talks volumes for his (Rooney's) leadership. He was very clear from when spoke he wanted to do this.

"You can see how well he has spoken and what it means for him to captain his country. People forget those who haven't turned out for their country and focus on those who have and I don't understand that.

"I remember [former England manager] Sven Goran-Eriksson saying 'look after him (Rooney) as he is our future' and I'm not sure we have always done that."

Slovenia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

England interim manager Gareth Southgate on dropping Wayne Rooney: "It is a football decision. It's based on the opposition. On a human level it's a very difficult decision because I don't like some people getting an element of satisfaction that he's not in the team. I am probably more annoyed on that than he is because he has had to deal with that throughout his career."

On Slovenia: "I've been impressed with what I've seen of Slovenia. It's a tight group now with the way results have gone. We want to leave here top of the table."

England interim manager Gareth Southgate says Liverpool skipper  Jordan Henderson will captain England against Slovenia.

"[I've been] very impressed by him (Henderson). What stood out for me is that he had to captain a football club and take over one of the most iconic figures in English football [in Steven Gerard].

"He has got a voice, opinion and what he thinks we need to work on and good tactical mind. It was not an easy decision as there are other senior players in the squad but, because he is the captain of a big football club, it was the right decision for me."

England interim manager Gareth Southgate confirms Eric Dier will start ahead of Wayne Rooney: "I think it's clear that you are talking about two different profiles of player. Different attributes. That's the basis of the decision. As a coach you have to look at the right setup for that game. I knew with this situation that obviously the news would leak. It was pretty obvious that Eric would come into the game."

England captain Wayne Rooney on fans booing on Saturday: "To be honest I wasn't aware of it. I think football nowadays sometimes that's part of the game but I wasn't aware of it on the pitch so I have nothing to say on it."

Has playing in an attacking role at Manchester United hindered your work in midfield for England? "I think throughout my career I have played in various positions. Sometimes during games three or four positions so I am used to playing different positions at times. I don't think that has an impact at club or international level."

England captain Wayne Rooney: "Of course, you want to be on the pitch but my role as captain won't change off the pitch. I will be supporting players 100%, which I have done, and hopefully we can get the win.

"If selected I am available to play. I love playing for my country. I've made it clear what my plans were and they won't change.

"If that (my role) is from the bench that is from the bench."

Wayne Rooney reacts to the news he will be on the bench against Slovenia: "I think of course you want to play. I understand and respect the manager's decision. I will support the players 100% and try to help them get three points. I will be ready to come off the bench if needed. Hopefully we can get three points. I show great pride in playing for my country whether that's from the start or the bench."

England interim manager Gareth Southgate: "I felt it was important to give Wayne Rooney time to think about how he wanted to deal with it. we spoke yesterday at length.

"Immediately, not only did he accept news with professionalism but he very keen to speak today. I wasn't sure that was a good idea but it is a great opportunity for him to talk about his pride about playing for England.

"He is still captain of this team."

Wayne Rooney is benched...

Slovenia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

Gareth Southgate confirms Wayne Rooney will not start against Slovenia.

Southgate tells the media: "It's very straight forward. We have looked at the way Slovenia play and I knew in my mind the profile of the midfield I wanted to play in this game. In no way is it a reflection of Wayne's performance on Saturday. He had a lot of the ball, played with great tactical discipline. It's not an easy decision to take because of the respect I have for him as the captain of this team."

Wayne Rooney to be dropped is fine .. He will accept that .. But why all the hatred towards one of England's Greatest players ???? #Madness

Time waits for no man...

Slovenia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

Just 13 months ago Wayne Rooney scored the goal which made him England's record goal scorer. Isn't it funny how football doesn't leave you sit pretty for too long.

In the blink of an eye he moved from talisman to someone who needs to play in midfield. Now it's maybe the bench.

Is this fair? Or is he England's fall guy?

If Wayne Rooney is dropped, has Gareth Southgate been brave or foolish?

Jon Hare: Too long ENG have picked on reputation and not on form. Rooney knows what

Tim Barry: Rooney will always be an England legend goals and caps prove this. But it's time to use him from the bench current form is poorhe has to do to get back in. Play well.

Stewart Young: Its a disgrace Wayne played brilliant last match too many haters out there I fully support a great player.

Rooney England retirement?

Slovenia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

Just to tease you a little more on the forthcoming news conference, a well known high-street bookmaker has just emailed me to say they have cut the price on Wayne Rooney to retire from England duty immediately.

They claim such an outcome was 33/1 this morning but a flurry of bets saw the price cut to 6/1 and now 3/1.

Surely not?

If Wayne Rooney is dropped, has Gareth Southgate been brave or foolish?

Vits: Rooney deserve a lot respect, but he's earned that respect via being a striker. Play him as a striker or don't play him at all.

Purple Tentacle: Ok so Rooney isn't playing that well, but who is in the england squad? Its the tempo and ethic that really needs sorting out.

Sue McGran: Rooney not on best form at the moment - should be put on the bench - definitely doesn't deserve the booing & bashing!

Northern Ireland news conference

Northern Ireland news conference
Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland have a tough task when they meet World Cup winners Germany on Tuesday. The Germans have lost just one qualifier in two years by my reckoning, against Republic of Ireland in 2015.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill tells a media conference: "We are playing the World Champions in a big stadium, it's a fantastic opportunity for all of us."

"We must be disciplined when we don't have the ball & be wary when we do. We'll have to play to another level."

'Swansea sounded interesting'

Ryan Giggs
.

Ryan Giggs has told BBC Sport a bit more about his discussions with Swansea City and insists his first permanent managerial job does not need to be in the Premier League.

"I planned this year on taking a year out, doing a bit of travelling, a bit of broadcast work, going to see other clubs here and abroad," he says.

"I said I'd be open to something that looked interesting. Swansea was one of those clubs. They asked me to have a chat with them and for one reason or another that just didn't quite work out. I wish them luck.

"It doesn't have to be Premier League. It's got to be a club that match my ambitions. As a player I was a winner and I want to be the same as a manager."

Lafferty dilemma for O'Neill

Northern Ireland will face their toughest test in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers when they meet Group C leaders Germany in Hanover.

The world champions outclassed Michael O'Neill's side in a 1-0 victory at Euro 2016 in June.

The main selection dilemma for O'Neill is in attack after substitute Kyle Lafferty impressed with a double in Saturday's 4-0 win over San Marino.

Kyle Lafferty is vying for a start with Josh Magennis and Conor Washington. We will hear from Michael O'Neill at around 18:00 BST.

Pep's concern for Sergio

Sergio Aguero

When Argentina take on Paraguay on Tuesday night the most nervous man on earth will probably be a Spaniard - Pep Guardiola.

His Manchester City talisman Sergio Aguero played for his country against Peru on Thursday but came off in the second half nursing his calf.

Reports in the country claim Aguero looked to be struggling in training on Monday.

"For now I feel good physically," Aguero told media. "But I'm quite well now: you get physical fitness playing, not training. (Coach Edgardo) Bauza has the decision - I'll be available for Tuesday."

If Wayne Rooney is dropped, has interim England manager Gareth Southgate been brave or foolish?

Dominic Crimmings: It seems to me Rooney is being scapegoated for overall poor team performances. How does anyone know boos aimed at him only?

Daniel woodley: A brave and justified decision. England's best performance this year was a 3-2 win against Germany. No Rooney that night.

'Not good enough'

Slovenia v England (Tuesday, 19:45 BST)

In an international week people have to find something to talk about. This time around it's Wayne Rooney it seems. A former England striker says the Rooney predicament is telling in how the national side currently ranks.

"I did not want to see our country’s greatest ever goalscorer and one of the best players to grace our game booed while wearing the captain’s armband at Wembley," writes Alan Shearer in his Sun column.

"We are in a position now where we have Rooney, who is not playing regularly for his club, Daniel Sturridge likewise and Theo Walcott, who is just finding some form again for Arsenal," Shearer added.

"Our goalkeeper Joe Hart has been rejected by the favourites for the title Manchester City. It is a sign of where we are at, not good enough."

'A tall skinny fat lad'

Tony Bellew defends his WBC cruiserweight world title on Saturday night against BJ Flores, a man with 32 wins and a draw from 35 fights.

Bellew, who won the strap at Goodison Park, is never one to hold back at a news conference and today he went big.

“His playboy mates think I am an easy touch, but when he gets in the ring and I hit him with ten ounce gloves on, he's going to feel it," said Bellew of Flores. "He's going to look across the ring at me and think, he looks a bit chunky, a bit flabby, but trust me, when I hit him for the first time he'll think 'what was that?'

"It’s a tall skinny fat lad from Liverpool with dynamite in both hands and you are going to feel it on Saturday night."

Ramos blow

Sergio Ramos

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos is facing a spell on the sidelines after spraining knee ligaments while on Spain duty.

The 30-year-old was replaced in the 80th minute of Spain's World Cup qualifying win over Albania on Sunday after falling awkwardly at a corner. Los Blancos did not specify how long he would miss but reports in Spain say around a month.
