Tuesday's County Championship action

So, Worcestershire trashed Northamptonshire, Somerset have battled back to lead against Middlesex, Surrey & Yorkshire look set to draw and Warwickshire were unfortunately denied any play whatsoever by the weather in Birmingham against Hampshire today.

Marcus Trescothick and Peter Trego will sleep well tonight - they have batted superbly at Taunton.

And that, in a nutshell, was Tuesday 12 July 2016 in the County Championship. The full reports on the day's play can be found here.

See you tomorrow! Good evening.

BreakingClose of play at Taunton

Somerset 236 & 348-6 v Middlesex 381

Peter Trego finds a four from the final ball of the session and that's it for the day!

Somerset will resume on Wednesday with Trego (115) and Alex Barrow (7) in the middle and a lead of 203 runs over Middlesex.

No runs from the over

Somerset 236 & 341-6 v Middlesex 381

There are no runs scored from the 84th over of Somerset's second innings, as Harry Podmore (3-69) bowls his sixth maiden over of this innings.

Stumps is not far off

Somerset 236 & 337-6 v Middlesex 381

There are four overs left. Harry Podmore and James Harris are the chosen bowlers in this spell for Middlesex as they look to end a frustrating day on a high.

Boundary for Barrow

Somerset 236 & 334-6 v Middlesex 381

Alex Barrow finds his first boundary with a four and moves up to six from 16 balls alongside Peter Trego, who is now on 102.

Somerset are looking to close out the day with these two in the middle. They lead by 189 runs.

Seven overs to play today

Somerset 236 & 329-6 v Middlesex 381

They are nearing the end of an intriguing day at Taunton.

Can the hosts see out the remaining overs of the evening without loss?

Superb 100 for Trego

Somerset 236 & 327-6 v Middlesex 381

A sweetly-struck single sees Peter Trego achieve a superb century and it has been a fine innings for Somerset in his 200th first-class match.

He punches his fist, looking up towards the dressing room. He kisses his helmet. The hosts are delighted!

WICKET Overton (c Simpson b Harris 2)

Somerset 236 & 315-6 v Middlesex 381

Oh! It's another! Craig Overton has been caught behind. James Harris has struck twice in the space of two important overs. Somerset are now 315-6, with a 170-run lead.

How long until the close?

Somerset 236 & 309-5 v Middlesex 381

Potentially, there are as many as 20 overs remaining this evening at Taunton. 20 very important overs for both sides.

WICKET Trescothick (c Simpson b Harris 124)

Somerset 236 & 307-5 v Middlesex 381

Big moment for Middlesex at Taunton! The hosts' Marcus Trescothick faced 217 balls but is finally out.

His innings has rescued Somerset. They now have a lead of 162 runs, as he departs. But the visitors have their long-awaited breakthrough and the 181-run fifth-wicket partnership ends.

Worcestershire win by 311 runs

Northamptonshire 148 & 142 v Worcestershire 277 & 324-8d

Worcestershire's Matt Henry (5-36) has enjoyed himself in this second innings. A quality performance.

Your Parliament XI

The polls have closed, Big Ben (Stokes) has rung out and we have a result!

Thank you for all your suggestions for today's Parliament-themed cricket XI - the #bbccricket team have Labour-ed through your suggestions...some of the attempts at humour were arguably a little too Conservative...but well done if your suggestion made it!

Here is today's team in batting order:

Andrew Strauss of Commons (capt)

Jake Libby-ral Democrat

Gunpowder Trott

Nick Speak-er

Luke Wright Honourable Gentleman

Craig White Paper

Black Rod Marsh (wicketkeeper)

Chris Guido Foakes (Woakes)

Ben Hilfenhaus of Lords

Dale Ab-steyn-sion

Jade Dernbach-bencher

Home ground: Nevil Chamberlain Road

Somerset's session, Somerset's day?

Somerset 236 & 290-4 v Middlesex 381

Somerset's lead at Taunton is now 145 runs. Have they turned a likely defeat into a possible victory?

Boundaries....then homeward-bound

Northamptonshire 148 & 129-9 v Worcestershire 277 & 324-8d

Ben Sanderson hits 12 in one over, with three fours, but then gets caught off George Rhodes. One wicket remains for Northants.

WICKET Prasanna (c Rhodes b Henry 31)

Northamptonshire 148 & 115/8 v Worcestershire 277 & 324-8d

Seekkuge Prasanna is caught hooking and Northamptonshire are still 338 runs behind with only two wickets remaining.

Crucial 100 from Trescothick

Somerset 236 & 260-4 v Middlesex 381

Stephan Shemilt

BBC Sport at Taunton

"Only by coming to Taunton do you really get an appreciation of what Marcus Trescothick means to the people of Somerset. When the 40-year-old made his debut in 1993, most of this ground wasn't built. A 49th ton for Somerset takes him past Sir Viv Richards' tally of 48. Not only that, but he's turning the tide of this match."

WICKET Crook (c Mitchell b Leach 33)

Northamptonshire 148 & 81-7 v Worcestershire 277 & 324-8d

Joe Leach takes the wicket of Steven Crook, who had offered the toughest resistance for Northants, and now it looks like a question of when, not if, for Worcestershire's big victory.

50 for Peter Trego

Somerset 236 & 235-4 v Middlesex 381

Peter Trego brings up his 50 from 61 balls.

His partner out in the middle, Marcus Trescothick, is on 94 and going strong.

100 partnership for Somerset

Somerset 236 & 232-4 v Middlesex 381

Marcus Trescothick and Peter Trego's fifth-wicket partnership is now over 100 runs for the hosts. The pair have been key to Somerset's revival this afternoon. Well played.

Staring at defeat

Northamptonshire 148 & 65/6 v Worcestershire 277 & 324-8d

Northamptonshire have lost a sixth wicket and they are surely staring at a huge defeat. Matt Henry has 4-22 for in-form Worcestershire.

Tea at Taunton

Somerset 236 & 214-4 v Middlesex 381

Somerset are making a fight of this, led by the evergreen Marcus Trescothick, who has shown all of that familiar massive, bucolic grace in reaching 84, the 121st half century of his 23-year first-class career. He's had good support from Jim Allenby (38) and Peter Trego (45 not out) as Somerset added 145 for the loss of just one wicket in the afternoon session, to leave themselves 69 ahead with 6 wickets standing and all to play for.

Play abandoned at the Oval

Surrey 164-5 v Yorkshire

The umpires have called it a day at the Oval. Rain has severely restricted play on both days of the match between Surrey and Yorkshire so far....a draw seems inevitable.

No play at Edgbaston today

Warwickshire 131-3 v Hampshire 531

It seems likely that Warwickshire will be aiming to pick up as many batting points as possible on the final day tomorrow with a positive result in this match for either side looking unlikely.

Tea at Taunton

Somerset 236 & 214-4 v Middlesex 381

Somerset now have a 69-run lead at Taunton. They're off for some well-earned tea and cake.

Bravo, Tom Arron. Superb!

What other suggestions have you got, folks?

Play abandoned at Edgbaston

Warwickshire 131-3 v Hampshire 531

You have to feel for anyone who had tickets for the cricket at Edgbaston today. Not a single over bowled. A huge shame. The glorious British BBQ summer of 2016 strikes again.

Hampshire loan Gavin Griffiths from Lancashire

Young bowler to play for Second XI

Kalika Mehta

BBC Sport at Edgbaston

Lancashire bowler Gavin Griffiths has joined Hampshire on a short-term loan to play for their Second XI.

Griffiths, 22, played for the Lightning during T20 Finals Day at Edgbaston in 2015 - taking 0-21 from three overs in the semi-finals against Hampshire.

In his only T20 match this season for the current trophy holders against Derbyshire in May, Griffiths bowled just one ball before being forced off the field with a hand injury.

He is a part of the Hampshire Second XI that is currently playing against Surrey at the Ageas Bowl - having claimed one wicket thus far with the visitors 199-9.

WICKET Rossington (c Cox b Leach 3)

Northamptonshire 148 & 31-3 v Worcestershire 277 & 324-8d

Northants three down in just 12 second-innings overs. 40 left in the day... #bbccricket

Early tea at Edgbaston

Warwickshire 131-3 v Hampshire 531

The umpires had just begun their 15:30 BST pitch inspection when the rain returned to Edgbaston, and now an early tea has been taken. If it is still raining at 16:00 BST, which it is likely to be, then the match will be called off for the day. Should no further play be possible, Warwickshire would have lost 848 overs this season. It's been a summer to forget for Bears fans.

Kalika MehtaBBC Sport at Edgbaston

WICKET Keogh (b Henry 9)

Northamptonshire 148 & 28-2 v Worcestershire 277 & 324-8d

Worcestershire are now eight wickets from victory. Rob Keogh is clean bowled, out for nine.

50 for Trescothick

Somerset 236 & 145-4 v Middlesex 381

Marcus Trescothick brings up his 50 for Somerset. A solid knock. But the hosts will need him to bat for a good while longer.

More rain at Wantage Road

Northamptonshire 148 & 24-1 v Worcestershire 277 & 324-8d

They're back off again. Come on's July, don't you know?

Play resumes at Wantage Road

Northamptonshire 148 & 19-1 v Worcestershire 277 & 324-8d

Northamptonshire need another 435 runs to win this match, with nine wickets remaining.

They have around a day-and-a-bit to find them.

Inspection at 15:30 at Edgbaston

Warwickshire 131-3 v Hampshire 531

Kalika Mehta

We have some good news from Edgabston, where it has been announced that the umpires will carry out an inspection at 15:30 BST. The Warwickshire groundstaff are working hard to clear the excess water off the covers and ground.
