Thank you and good night

Well, we had to wait for a bit of drama, but Canada finally delivered to claim a first opening game victory and get their home tournament off to the best possible start. Don't forget, you can watch this morning's second game (New Zealand v Netherlands) online and on the red button.

Thanks for joining us. We'll be back with more Women's World Cup soon.

Canada 1-0 China

Rachel Brown-Finnis

Former England goalkeeper on BBC 3

"There was not a lot in it for me. It was a pretty contentious decision. For it to be a penalty, it was a soft one. But what a cool customer Sinclair was. It was the perfect penalty."

Twist in the tale

Sarah Taylor: Do #CAN deserve that #win? Probably not on the #balanceofPlay. Tough on #CHI that!

Matt Love: Well it's good to know that it's not just the referees in the men's game that are awful.

Dominic Fox: Never a penalty. Terrible decision.

Katy Jones: Glad I stayed up2watch all the game!Bit of drama in the1st game, hopefully settin it up2be a great tournament!!

FULL-TIME

Canada 1-0 China

Christine Sinclair's late penalty is the last meaningful act of the game as Canada break their duck in World Cup opening games. It is very cruel on China, who held their own in that second half and looked to have taken a point. But Sinclair's 154th international goal gave the tale a thrilling twist.

Canada 1-0 China

Lucy Ward

Former Leeds forward on BBC Three

"The sound you can hear is relief. You don't save those penalties. That's a great finish. The weight of expectation was on Sinclair but she did what she would normally do with a penalty and put it right in the corner."

GOAL

Canada 1-0 China - Christine Sinclair

They do score! Christine Sinclair has played too many international matches to be fazed by a situation like this and she makes no mistake by finding the corner of the net with a cool side-foot finish. Frustration in replaced by joy in Edmonton.

Lucy Ward

Former Leeds forward on BBC Three

"Not sure about that. My first reaction is that's not a penalty. That's just defending. This is big pressure and a little unfair on China."

PENALTY

Canada 0-0 China

Canada

Drama! Canada have a penalty as Kaylyn Kyle drops to the turf after running across and into a flailing arm from Zhao Rong in the box. This will surely be a winner for Canada if they score...

Canada 0-0 China

Three minutes of added time.

Canada 0-0 China

Desperate times for Canada as they seek out a winner but Josee Belanger's cross from the right lands straight into the hands of Wang Fei. It sums up the second half for the hosts - when they have needed a bit of quality, they have been found wanting.

Canada 0-0 China

Han Peng is down and eating into vital time for Canada as she receives treatment. China's final change - which sees Ma Jun replace Gu Yasha - runs the clock down further. Three minutes to go.

Canada 0-0 China

China have no interest in attacking now. They are focused entirely on keeping the hosts from hurting them. Kaylyn Kyle helps their cause by lofting an aimless and over-hit ball out of play for a goal-kick.

Chelsea and England striker

Eniola Aluko: So exciting to be watching the opening game of @FIFAWWC!!! Feels very real now! 53,000+ Canadian crowd looks amazing. 3 days to go #ENG

CLOSE!

Canada 0-0 China

Canada

There was the chance. And it fell to exactly the right player for Canada as Christine Sinclair's shot is blocked, collected by Sophie Schmidt and then set-up again for the host's star player to side-foot a tame shot into the hands of Wang Fei from inside the box.

Schmidt then goes close with a angled drive from range that flies past the far post. Close, but not close enough.

Canada 0-0 China

Lucy Ward

Former Leeds forward on BBC Three

"If Canada want to win this game they have got to be more direct. They have got to do something they haven't done so far."

Hope springs eternal

Tim Oliver: There has yet to be a goalless opening match in the Women's World Cup.

Canada 0-0 China

Wang Fei slows the game down by taking her time with a goal-kick, drawing boos from the crowd. China have a point within their grasp. There are 10 minutes to go and Canada look devoid of ideas.

SUBSTITUTION

Canada 0-0 China

That is the cue for a final Canada change as Ariana Leon comes on for Melissa Tancredi. Final attacking throw of the dice.

Canada 0-0 China

Canada

The hosts almost provide the opener as a cross is met but Christine Sinclair, but headed wide. It looks like it might have come off a Chinese head but goal-kick is the decision.

Thou shalt not pass

Dan Keers: BREAKING NEWS the Great Wall of China has moved ...... To Canada

Canada 0-0 China

A rare touch for Christine Sinclair gives the crowd a rare chance to cheer but she can do nothing with possession as her forward pass is too heavy for Sophie Schmidt. It has just been announced that the crowd is 53,058 - a new record for a football match of either sex in Canada. Now all they need is something to entertain them.

Canada 0-0 China

This is poor now. Such a shame after a decent first half. Canada underline this with a floated pass that drifts straight out of play. Cue frustration from players in red.

Canada 0-0 China

Lucy Ward

Former Leeds forward on BBC Three

"Young players often play with no fear. China have put such a good barrier in front of Canada and it has just frustrated them. They need someone to unlock that door."

SUBSTITUTION

Canada 0-0 China

Another change for Canada as Notts County's Desiree Scott departs, with Jessie Fleming coming on for a 17th cap that matches her age.

England under-19
@shellycox3

Canada 0-0 China

Canada have a renewed determination and it brings them a second opening in a couple of minutes as an attack concludes with a shot from range from midfielder Desiree Scott that flies over the bar.

China respond with a shot of their own as Han Peng latches on to a loose ball to fire over from distance.

These represent the first two shots of this half, in over 20 minutes of play.

Canada 0-0 China

Kaylyn Kyle's first involvement in the game is a positive one as she gets in behind the China defence to put over a low cross that is gathered by Wang Fei. Poor execution, but it is encouraging for the home side.

SUBSTITUTION

Canada 0-0 China

Canada

There are a lot of Canada players staring at the floor as they struggle to make anything happen. The hosts are in need of something fresh - is Kaylyn Kyle the woman to provide it? She has just come on for striker Jonelle Filigno.

China respond with a change of their own as Li Ying departs to be replaced by Zhang Rui, who scored a hat-trick the last time China won in December 2014.

Canada 0-0 China

BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan in Moncton: "An entertaining first half of the Women's World Cup and both teams have certainly raised their games since facing England in recent friendlies. The host broadcasters are getting very excited. 'A double post for China and a crossbar for Canada' booms the anchor before they cross to more adverts featuring Christine Sinclair."

Canada 0-0 China

China look to make something happen but an angled ball into the box from deep runs away from Ren Guixin, who is being muscled about by Kadeisha Buchanan. Sadly, that is as close as we have come to any goalmouth action this half.

Canada 0-0 China

Stats

China are using their right flank a lot, as shown by the graphic of their attacking action areas above.

Canada 0-0 China

If you thought the inventive barnets would end with the Champions League final, think again. Sophie Schmidt has a shaved sides/coloured top combo going on. She takes a blow to the head in an aerial challenge but after a little bit of treatment is OK to continue. This is flat now (the game, not Schmidt's hair). The crowd are very quiet and there is little going on in front of them to lift the volume.

England expects

Rachel Brown-Finnis

Former England goalkeeper on BBC 3

"It seems to be a happy camp with a positive mood. They are going into the game in a good place, mentally."

England start their campaign against France next Tuesday in Moncton (kick-off 18:00 BST).

Anthony Mark Mcavoy: Considering the pitch and all the controversy this is a very good advert for the woman's game.

E K D: The #WWC2015 true sportsmanship & no prima donna antics from the players. & no biting a la Luis Suarez.

Canada 0-0 China

Lucy Ward

Former Leeds forward on BBC Three

"China do really well one-on-one defending, anywhere on the pitch. There's a little bit of urgency required by Canada."

Canada 0-0 China

The second half has carried on where the first left off. With a lot of play in midfield but not enough guile at either end. Canada are looking to be more urgent but so far China are doing well to keep them at bay. Chinese keeper Wang Fei nearly gets into bother by dwelling on the ball but is able to clear before Melissa Tancredi can nick the ball off her.

Canada 0-0 China

If you want to check out the highlights of the first-half, including a superb free-kick from China that hit both posts, then you can do so by clicking on the highlights tab at the top of this page.

Meanwhile, China have a corner, which is wasted and head clear by Josee Belanger near the edge of the Canada box.
