Refreshing approach to football coverage here in Sweden. Free-to-air broadcast for U21 Euros. How many in England watched the future stars?

Manager reaction

Sweden U21 0-1 England U21

England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to BT Sport: "It needed that to get the points on the board but we played better against Portugal. We held our nerve and showed resilience. We told the players it might take 70 minutes and it took longer than that. We deserved the win because of the control we had over it.

"We looked a bit leggy and the pitch was slow so that meant the ball was sticky but we needed to shift the ball more quickly to unsettle them. Reuben gave us an injection of pace from midfield, he and Jesse had a great impact.

"It's in our hands now."

I agree, Khaled. Very, very impressed with young Reuben.

Sweden striker John Guidetti, speaking to BT Sport: "It feels like we did all that running for nothing. If you make mistakes at this level, you get punished. We did great for 85 minutes but we lost focus and with England's quality it was boom, game over. For 85 minutes, everything was perfect. We could have nicked it but our gameplan was that one point was good enough. We have overcome some crazy things with this team so we never give up."

A change in midfield?

Wasn't pretty but they got the required result. Got to think about changing that midfield 3 if they are to progress. #EnglandU21s

Was it a volley?

Richard Fidler: Of course it is a volley - how else would you describe it? And don't anyone say half-volley, because that's totally different.

England goalscorer Jesse Lingard, speaking to BT Sport: "The lads worked hard today, we knew we needed a win. We had the team spirit and heart to win the game and we showed we can grind games out. It came straight into my mind to shoot and luckily it went in. The goal killed them and then we saw the game out."

Felix Mulderrig: Heads & Volleys rules, not a volley if it's a self set-up.

Mark Lawrenson in the Czech Republic

"Just forget the pretty football, just get the result. It does not mask that England played so much better against Portugal and tonight against a very average Swedish side, they were poor.

"England have a way of playing which is fine but when chasing the game, they have too many touches in the wrong areas - they need to get the ball in wider areas quicker so they can make things happen. I would say they are working too hard on retaining possession."

How it stands

Sweden U21 0-1 England U21

Those group tables look a lot better. Italy and Portugal play later this evening, in about 50 minutes' time.

"First thing first, they have got the all important three points but they have got away with it a bit.

"It was a goal of class but it was one of few classy moments England produced. England never really got to grips with what they had to do, but they managed to win and Wednesday, when they play agains, is another day."

Sweden U21 0-1 England U21

It wasn't pretty though, was it? Quick question for those watching the game on television - was Jesse Lingard's goal a volley? The jury is out in the BBC Sport office. Some think because the ball bounced before it got to him it wasn't. Others, like me, think the chest-down made it a volley. Answers on a postcard.

FULL-TIME

Sweden U21 0-1 England U21

Gareth Southgate punches the air in delight as the referee's whistle shrieks around the ground. Job done.

Sweden U21 0-1 England U21

Corner comes in, is flicked across goal by Filip Helander but nobody - to England's relief - can get the final touch.

Sweden pump the ball long and end up winning a corner.

England are battling hard to preserve their lead as three minutes of injury time are announced. Danny Ings tracks back and blocks a Swedish ball forward. All hands to the pump.

Paul Thompson: We should probably thank the Swedish goalkeeper there just as much as Jesse Lingard. What was he doing?! England lifeline!

Jesse Lingard will be getting the first go on the team Xbox tonight. What a strike that was. One bounce, off his chest and then bang.

"What a sweet strike by Lingard, off his chest, sized it up and....absolute class, outside of the boot. The keeper actually got something on it and might have done better. How mad is this game?"

GOAL

Sweden U21 0-1 England U21 - Jesse Lingard

Jesse Lingard

England finally have lift-off. A corner, won when Redmond's shot was turned round the post, is cleared but only as far as Jesse Lingard who drives a powerful shot into the back of the net from the edge of the area. Relief.

Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Better. Better.

Nathan Redmond tries his luck from 25 yards and his dipping, one-bounce shot almost sneaks in at the near post.

Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Again, Carl Jenkinson plays the ball into the area but all three England forwards are stationary behind yellow shirts in the area. Too easy for their markers.

Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Sweden striker Mikael Ishak has a dig from 20 yards out and Jack Butland gathers at the second attempt.

PENALTY APPEAL

Ruben Loftus-Cheek looks the business to me. A pure athlete, he drives down the middle and brings others into play - laying the ball into the feet of Danny Ings who goes to ground in the area. The new Liverpool man wants a penalty but it's not given. He had a case...

"It looks as though Ruben Loftus-Cheek is going to play alongside Nathaniel Chalobah.

"England have still not got it - they had 15 minutes to [in all probability] stay in the competition."

SUBSTITUTION

Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Change for Sweden - Sam Larsson replacing Simon Tibbling in midfield.

Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

One of the few players to escape any criticism tonight must surely be Carl Jenkinson. Again the full-back gets forward and puts in a decent cross but there's nobody in the box to do anything about it. Generally, the Arsenal's man delivery has been decent.

SUBSTITUTION

Sweden U21 0-0 England U21

Jose Mourinho's young charge Ruben Loftus-Cheek is brought from the bench and he replaces Tom Carroll.
