Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Right then, that's about it from White Hart Lane - take a look at the match report if you want a reminder of how Spurs came back from a goal down to claim an emphatic victory.

Or, if you want more Premier League goals, then you can follow the rest of Saturday's top-flight action here.

"The belief is fantastic"

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino told BBC Sport: "It was a good response to the Leicester defeat. I’m very pleased. We need to be patient.

"We had a lot of shots on target – their goalkeeper was fantastic. I feel very pleased in the last few games. The belief is fantastic. We have a very good, strong squad – today was a good example."

"Pickford has a bright future"

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

And here is Allardyce on 21-year-old Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who had a much more impressive Premier League debut, making several good saves despite conceding four goals.

Allardyce told BT Sport: “Jordan Pickford is a good lad. The experience he has gained on loan has helped him out a tremendous amount. He looks comfortable at this age. It’s a bright future for us and for him."

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce was talking to BT Sport about Jan Kirchhoff's debut, which came when he brought him on as third centre-back just before the hour mark: “Our legs were running out and I wanted to make sure we had the energy to stay in the game.

"John O’Shea and Wes Brown are in their late 30s so will feel the pace of the game. The extra defender was to tighten it up.

“It’s coming in the Premier League for the first time. He’s found out how difficult it is. We had to get him on at some stage. You can’t judge a man on one swallow. He knows what the pace is like now. He’s contributed to the loss with the penalty. But we opened up too much – that was the problem."

Eriksen vs Sunderland

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

I've just seen a few stats from White Hart Lane. Basically, Christian Eriksen wishes he could play Sunderland every week...

Eriksen has now scored in all four of his Premier League appearances against Sunderland (five goals).

The Dane has netted more goals against Sunderland in the Premier League than versus any other opponent (5).

Eriksen scored in the Premier League from open play for the first time in almost a year (Jan 17th 2015 the last time before today – also versus Sunderland).

"You cannot judge a man on one swallow"

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce gets his metaphors a bit mixed up when he is asked about Jan Kirchhoff's less than illustrious debut.

Allardyce told BT Sport: "You cannot judge a man on one swallow."

"A dream come true"

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

No, this isn't Jan Kirchhoff talking about his Sunderland debut...

Black Cats keeper Jordan Pickford told BT Sport: “I found out this morning I’d play. I was buzzing but the result didn’t go our way. I’ve had a lot of experience in the lower leagues. I didn’t feel too nervous.

"It’s nice to get an early save. Making your Premier League debut is a dream come true, a shame the result wasn’t the same. We’ve got a good week training ahead of us before Bournemouth next Saturday.”

When the Hoff came on...

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Here's when Jan Kirchhoff's afternoon started to go wrong. The 59th minute, when he replaced Danny Graham. It was all going so well for the big German until then...

"A solid performance"

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Spurs striker Harry Kane told BT Sport: "We were trying to play too much around their area instead of getting shots off [earlier on]. The second half was a solid performance.

"Whenever you come off a defeat you have to bounce back and we’ve done that. It’s still a long way to go until May. We’ll just keep working hard."

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Sunderland, needless to say, remain in the relegation zone after that second-half rout which ended their mini-revival. They are a point behind 17th-placed Swansea but their goal-difference took a bit of a pounding today, as did their defensive record - which was already the worst in the top flight.

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Tottenham return to winning ways in emphatic style after that midweek slip against Leicester. They are four points off the top of the table - I wonder if Sam Allardyce thinks they have got the bottle to win the title now?

'Tottenham ran riot'

"Tottenham ran riot after Sunderland switched off. They gained complete control of the game and ran away with it in the second half."

FULL-TIME

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Referee Mike Dean blows the final whistle to end Sunderland's misery. Black Cats goalkeeper Jordan Pickford did not deserve to lose 4-1 on his Premier League debut, but it is safe to say that their centre-back Jan Kirchoff did.

'This is a really big result for Tottenham'

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Clive Allen

Former Tottenham & England forward at White Hart Lane for 5 live Sport

"I think a whole host of teams could still win the title, and this is a really big result for Tottenham. They responded so well today after falling behind, and this big win will heap pressure on the likes of Manchester City."

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Tottenham have got three minutes of added time to find a fifth goal. They are camped outside the Sunderland area, looking menacing.

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Tottenham are coming forward in search of more goals. Sunderland just want to get out of White Hart Lane as quickly as possible.

SUBSTITUTION

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

We are inside the last four minutes, and I think we can forget about a Sunderland comeback.

Tottenham are making their third and final change - Harry Kane departs to a standing ovation and on comes Son Heung-Min.

Ryan Nurse: From the sounds of things, Jan Kirchhoff is having the worse Premier League debut since Ali Dia.

Sunderland have conceded three goals since Kirkchoff came on as a substitute. One goal deflected off the German and he then conceded the penalty.

'Sunderland have simply crumbled'

"It's been all Spurs in this second half, and Sunderland have simply crumbled. Whenever Tottenham have attacked they have created opportunities and they deserve to be 4-1 up."

Don't hassle the Hoff

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Jan Kirchhoff has a touch of the Per Mertesackers about him and is playing like the Arsenal centre-back would if you had just taken him out of the freezer. I think he might take a few games to thaw out, or adjust to the pace of the Premier League. Whatever happens quickest.

SUBSTITUTION

Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

The points are in the bag for Tottenham, who have just made their another change - Tom Carroll replaces Mousa Dembele.

GOAL - Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland

Harry Kane

Harry Kane has got his goal, tucking away the penalty past Jordan Pickford without any problems. I don't think Jan Kirchhoff will remember his Premier League debut particularly fondly, do you?

PENALTY to Tottenham

Tottenham 3-1 Sunderland

Do I have to tell you that Jan Kirchhoff conceded it? Probably not. He dived in on Danny Rose, and missed the ball by about a minute.

Tottenham 3-1 Sunderland

Patrick van Aanholt is not happy, because Dele Alli has just flicked the ball at him after it went out for a throw. Referee Mike Dean is over to sort it out, without showing a card.

'Tottenham are short in numbers up front'

"There is no doubt that Tottenham are short in numbers when it comes to their frontline. I do think they need to add a striker in January, just to back up Harry Kane. It mighty only be a young prospect they purchase, but I do think Spurs need to go into the market.

"Of course, strikers can cost a lot of money..."

SUBSTITUTION

Tottenham 3-1 Sunderland

While Harry Kane has seen plenty of the ball, Black Cats striker Jermain Defoe has been feeding on scraps - he has only managed two shots at goal, and one of them was blocked.

Sunderland are making their final change, and another young English talent is entering the fray - Duncan Watmore is on for Jeremain Lens.

SUBSTITUTION

Tottenham 3-1 Sunderland

Harry Kane seems determined to get on the scoresheet himself today but the Tottenham striker has just had his sixth shot of the game pushed away by the impressive Jordan Pickford.

Time for a Spurs change - Erik Lamela is off, replaced by England Under-19 international Josh Onomah.

Tottenham 3-1 Sunderland

Sunderland do have time on their side - about 20 minutes of it - and they have just threatened for the first time in a while.

Adam Johnson and Patrick van Aanholt, who combined so well when the visitors took the lead, link up again. Van Aanholt's first touch is heavy but he still gets in a cross that Tottenham clear before Jermain Defoe can get on the end of it.

'You feel sorry for young Pickford...'

"You feel sorry for young Jordan Pickford, who has had an outstanding performance for Sunderland. He just couldn't do anything about that. The huge deflection takes the ball right between the crossbar and the upright - an impossible one to save, with the keeper completely outwitted."

Allardyce decision backfires

Tottennham 3-1 Sunderland

Clive Allen

Former Tottenham & England forward at White Hart Lane for 5 live Sport

"Isn't it amazing, Allardyce made that change and bought on Kirchhoff to move to three central defenders and hang on to what they had and in a matter of seconds they are behind. They had forward options but he made the change for a specific reason and it has not paid dividends.

"Sunderland's best chance is set pieces as it is their best opportunity to put their big defenders further forward."

GOAL - Tottenham 3-1 Sunderland

Christian Eriksen

That outcome is looking a lot more likely now, because Jan Kirchhoff's afternoon is not getting any better.

Christian Eriksen lets fly from the edge of the area and his shot spins off Sunderland's new German defender and flies into the net.

Tottenham 2-1 Sunderland

If Spurs go on to take the three points, they will be a point behind third-placed Manchester City and four points behind the leaders, their north London rivals Arsenal.

Tottenham 2-1 Sunderland

Spurs suddenly have a spring in their step coming forward, while Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe still looks isolated in their attack. No sign of a Black Cats equaliser at the moment, although their first goal did come out of nothing so let's not write them off just yet.

GOAL - Tottenham 2-1 Sunderland

Mousa Dembele

Mousa Dembele celebrates

Jan Kirchhoff's stats are not going to make pleasant reading, he was only on the pitch a couple of minutes and Spurs had three shots and scored.

Jordan Pickford did well again to keep out Harry Kane's bouncing shot from distance and then parry Danny Rose's fierce effort from the resulting corner, but he could do nothing about Mousa Dembele's follow-up to squirt the ball into the bottom corner.

'Big 40 mins for Spurs'

Tottenham 1-1 Sunderland

Clive Allen

Former Tottenham & England forward at White Hart Lane for 5 live Sport

“It is a big 40 minutes for Spurs. It is important for Sunderland in position they are, that they hold onto a valuable point. But for Spurs if it stays like this, they will be looking over their shoulders at Manchester United and West Ham who will be looking for them to slip up.”

How rusty is the Hoff?

Tottenham 1-1 Sunderland

It is Danny Graham making way for the Hoff, who arrived from Bayern Munich earlier this month. He has not played much this season - less than a minute according to MOTD commentator Simon Brotherton.

Here comes The Hoff

Tottenham 1-1 Sunderland

Sunderland are about to make another change - their new German defender, Jan Kirchhoff - all 6ft 5in of him - is about to make his debut.

Tottenham 1-1 Sunderland

Here come Tottenham again, and they do much better with the final ball this time. Erik Lamela skips into space and clips in a useful cross for Dele Alli, but he cannot find the target with his header.

SUBSTITUTION

Tottenham 1-1 Sunderland

That Sunderland change has now taken place - Lee Cattermole, who had just been booked, has been replaced by Jack Rodwell.
