'We are fighting for Europe'

Leicester 1-0 Newcastle

Leicester City

More from Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri: "It was a tough match. We were waiting for this kind of match. Their players wanted to show good strength and character and in my opinion Newcastle's players are very good and I am sure they will be safe."

Asked if the title race is now a two-horse race: "No, the race is open. We are fighting for Europe and then maybe with four or five matches left, maybe we are fighting for the Champions League. I want to fight every match. Now our concentration is about Crystal Palace, another difficult match. We will go to battle there.

"I enjoyed more the second half. The first half was so-so because we were not concentrated. In the second half we were more compact."

Two teams in it?

A two-horse race?

Leicester 1-0 Newcastle

Aston Villa are nine points adrift - 10 with goal difference - with eight games to go. They are as good as goners.

After that, Newcastle, Norwich and Sunderland look to be fighting for one safe spot.

Newcastle face Sunderland and then Norwich next. MASSIVE.

'Step by step'

Leicester 1-0 Newcastle

Leicester City

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri: "I was sure it would be this kind of match. Their players showed Rafa their attitude and the Newcastle players are very good. I am sure that they will be safe.

"It wasn't the best performance from us but we showed fantastic spirit. We defended very well. We played, and we fight. It wasn't nervy in the second half, the team was so close and compact.

"I feel now that I am just concentrating on the next game against Crystal Palace. We are so strong, we think only one game at a time. Step by step, that is our philosophy."

'There were a lot of positives'

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez: "We started really well and had two good chances. After 20 minutes they started pushing and they scored and played the game they like to play on the counter attack.

"I wasn't happy with the goal because there were too many balls bouncing in the box. I would like to think about the positives. We reacted well and were pushing well.

"I thought that we could get a result and I was convinced we could do it. But they worked really hard and are pushing and their tempo is not easy for any team.

"I will take the positives - we did well, you could see the commitment and the passion.

"There were a lot of positives and the team showed that they are convinced they can win. Every game will be important for us.

"We know our next game against Sunderland is a derby and it will be important for everyone but I have a feeling the fans are really good and they are the number 12 for the next game. We have plenty of things to do and they need to rest and work hard.

"I like the people, the staff, the fans and everyone is behind the club. Eveything is positive but now we have to give them what they want on the pitch. We cannot change this result but we can be happy in terms of the commitment of the players."

Bang average, long throw and time wasting and lucky against a poor Newcastle team, would be the worst team ever to win the league

Paul in Solihull

I am very happy for Leicester that they got the job done and have the points. It was not the easiest of games for the likely champions, and Newcastle didn't look defeated throughout that second half, but the points are in the bag. Things can only get better from here. HAIL THE FOXES!

Chris Green, Huddersfield

You say Leicester have not been great in periods tonight but if Messi has scored that goal everyone would be going mad!

Bobby in Fulham

Leicester 1-0 Newcastle

Absolute pig of a game but WHO CARES. Leicester are 5 points clear. 8 games to go, folks.

'Rafa can keep us up'

Leicester 1-0 Newcastle

Newcastle United

Newcastle midfielder/full-back Jack Colback: "We had three days to work with the new manager, he has vast experience and he can keep us up. We were solid. It was a scrappy goal to win the game. It wasn't a free-kick in the build up and when you're at the top balls like that fall for you.

"In the second half it hit Wes Morgan on the arm quite clearly but it wasn't given."

Player reaction

Leicester 1-0 Newcastle

Leicester City

Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater: "We got the goal and sat back a bit, it was ugly on our side but the points that matter. Shinki Okazaki works his socks off and he deserved that goal, a special moment for us. Kante is a great player, anyone in our squad would agree, he's quality."

Leicester captain Wes Morgan: "We had to dig in, it wasn't easy with Rafa Benitez taking over and giving them a lift. It wasn't a pretty game but we got the points. The games are getting ticked off, it will go to the last game. We aren't watching where we might finish..."

Andros Townsend could do his old club a huge favour today.

Leicester remind me of Aston Villa ..... in 1981. Won the league with 14 players all season. Withe, Shaw, Morley, Cowans, Mortimer etc. Very happy for Leicester. Hurting badly for Villa now.

Never, ever got nervous playing, taking penalties, anything, but watching this....

Leicester 1-0 Newcastle

Newcastle have had 55% of the play since half-time, they look a far better side. If you can take positives from defeat when you're in a relegation fight then it's tonight.
