Manager reaction

Shrewsbury 0-3 Manchester United

Shrewsbury boss Micky Mellon to BT Sport: "We have to say about the quality of Manchester United, it was absolutely fantastic.

"I couldn't have asked more of the players - we just came up against a team of utmost quality.

"I haven't seen the free-kick back. We have to come away from this, say it has been a fantastic cup run. We gave it everything but, playing against quality like that, it wasn't going to be enough."

'We have a lot of titles to fight for'

Shrewsbury 0-3 Manchester United

More from Manchester United boss on BBC Sport: "I was very pleased. We have played 70 minutes fantastic, in a professional way, creating chances and scoring goals. After 70 we were with 10 and it was more difficult.

"It [injuries] was unbelievably unlucky again. The players were very committed to perform and you see what is the consequence.

"Everyone shall say Manchester United have to win against Shrewsbury Town. For the players it is fantastic because we are in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

"We are in all the competitions, just six points behind Manchester City, we have a lot of chances, a lot of titles to fight for. It isisn't easy because we have to win a lot of games but it is still possible."

'We learned from Midtjyllandand'

Shrewsbury 0-3 Manchester United

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, speaking about the unusual free-kick that put Man Utd 2-0 ahead: "We have learned because we analysed [Europa League opponents] FC Midtjyllandand and we saw they were doing that. We thought it was always offside so we asked the referees and they said it’s not offside, you can do that.

"That’s why we have learned about the taking of the free-kicks. Today we scored and that’s good."

Take another look at Mata's strike here ()and keep an eye on the Man Utd players behind the wall):

Mata doubles Man Utd's advantage

7 - Manchester United have now won the last seven FA Cup fifth round ties that they have been involved in. Familiar.

"Crisis averted for another day for Louis van Gaal as Manchester United outclass Shrewsbury Town.

"Much tougher tests lie ahead - but for now the Dutchman will happily take this result and an FA Cup quarter-final meeting with West Ham United at OId Trafford."

Some more talking points include how long do they give van Gaal?  And who will be making the big decisions about the next boss in coming weeks and months.

The chatter about Jose Mourinho being the next Manager at Manchester United grew louder over the weekend with Inter Milan director Bedy Moratti said of Mourinho "he's happy,  he's going to Manchester."

FULL-TIME

That won't live long in the memory.

But a much-needed comfortable 90 minutes for Louis van Gaal as the Manchester United boss fights on.

West Ham up next in the FA Cup quarter-final for United.

CLOSE!

Shrewsbury 0-3 Manchester United

Shrewsbury have burst into life.

Larnell Cole turns 25 yards out before fizzing a shot over the bar.

Into three minutes of added on time.

Shrewsbury 0-3 Manchester United

The 10-men of Manchester United are playing keep ball.

Blow up ref.

Memphis Depay breaks on goal but his shot is smothered by goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler. Good save.

Abu Ogogo heads at goal

Shrewsbury should have a goal.

Jack Grimmer sends in a beautiful cross from the right, picking out an unmarked Abu Ogogu just yards from goal.

Somehow the Shrewsbury man heads wide. Toblerone head anyone? What a chance.

Shrewsbury 0-3 Manchester United

That is the closest Shrewsbury have come by a mile.

A brilliant turn by Larnell Cole down United's left, he gets into the penalty area, pulls the ball across goal, but United clear with Abu Ogogu busting a gut to get on the end of.

Taxi for Memphis...

Depay's shooting has been woeful this evening but that is worse than woeful.

Twenty yards out and he scuffs a shot so weakly wide it is laughable.

SUBSTITUTION

We have 10 minutes left and Shrewsbury still have not had a shot on goal.

Manchester United have had 23.

A glimmer of hope for Shrewsbury.

Substitute Will Keane has been forced off with a groin injury and Manchester United have no subs left.

Shrewsbury needed a hand from somewhere. At least they now have the numerical advantage.

Shrewsbury 0-3 Manchester United

Just as I say that, Shrewsbury break and they have a free-kick on the right and 40 yards out.

Normally not a moment of excitement but, when you have had as little to cheer as Shrewsbury have, this is worth celebrating.

Junior Brown whips it in from the right, Sergio Romero comes flapping, but Zak Whitbread heads wide. From the loose ball, Romero is judged to have been fouled.

HITS THE WOODWORK

Shrewsbury 0-3 Manchester United

A sublime flick from Memphis Depay sends Will Keane into the penalty area but, running away from goal, his fierce strike beats the goalkeeper but cannons off the post. Good strike.

Shrewsbury have pitched their tents, set up the camp fire and put up the wind break. They are camped in their own half.

Jesse Lingard talks with Louis van Gaal
Reuters

Jesse Lingard should make it 4-0.

He receives the ball from the otherwise poor Memphis Depay but, through on goal and inside Shrewsbury's penalty area, he bobbles a shot wide.

Terrible Jesse. No wonder you limp away with a pained expression.

Man Utd on easy street

Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at Greenhous Meadow

This could not have been more comfortable for Manchester United. Shrewsbury Town have been so passive and it was apparent from very early on that they simply did not have the capacity to seriously hurt Van Gaal's side.

Good night and a pay-day for the League One club - but nothing more.

"It doesn't matter they've conceded. Shrewsbury have put the ball in the United box. Defensively they never looked like they would keep United out, so they should keep trying to play. Go and enjoy the game."

GOAL - Shrewsbury 0-3 Manchester United

Jesse Lingard

Shrewsbury have their most dangerous moment of the match as Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro crosses at goalkeeper Sergio Romero from the right.

Seconds later and United extend their lead. They break quickly, Ander Herrera clips a cross to the far post and Jesse Lingard calmly converts.

No more than they have deserved.

The match stats tell a pretty damning story.

Shrewsbury haven't had a shot on or off target. Manchester United have had 19 in total.

Brilliant from Anthony Martial.

He sells Zak Whitbread a beauty on the bye line.

While the Shrewsbury defender slides towards his fans, Martiall pulls the ball back but it is scrambled wide.
