INJURY TIME

Four minutes of injury time as Victor Wanyama heads to the corner flag.

Southampton 3-2 Liverpool

Steve Claridge

Ex-Portsmouth striker on BBC Radio 5 live

"The game has become so open. Southampton put an extra man in midfield, all of a sudden Liverpool go to a 4-4-2 and the game has turned on its head.

"Mane has been fantastic, he has made such a difference and you can see why he is so coveted by other clubs."

GOAL - Southampton 3-2 Liverpool

Sadio Mane

St Mary's delirous, the away end disbelieving.

Simon Mignolet's clearance had height but no distance and the ball was worked to Sadio Mane to apply a pinpoint finish low into the far corner.

Surely that is game, set and match Saints?

GOAL - Southampton 2-2 Liverpool

Graziano Pelle

Graziano Pelle celebrates his goal
Reuters

Graziano Pelle just bullied one Liverpool centre-back - winning a header high above Martin Skrtel - before returning to earth to bemuse another - Mamadou Sakho - to buy a yard of space for a shot 20 yards out.

It's deadly. Bottom corner. Mignolet powerless and that is parity.

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

Liverpool look like they are dipping for the line already.

Slow passing build-up, walking through quicksand as they prepare to take free-kicks or throw-ins.

CLOSE!

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

What a chance to seal it!

Adam Lallana nicks the ball in midfield, springs Christian Benteke, but the Liverpool substitute striker looks short of form and confidence as he duffs a finish narrowly wide of the far post when clean through on Fraser Forster.

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

Inside the final twenty minutes and Liverpool's fans are rather wistfully and wishfully chanting the name of Luis Suarez.

That will not be their final change.

SUBSTITUTION

Daniel Sturridge comes off

Liverpool also make a change with Christian Benteke on to replace Daniel Sturridge who has slowed up markedly in the second half.

SUBSTITUTION

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

James Ward Prowse replace Oriol Romeu in the Southampton midfield in Ronald Koeman's third and final change.

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

Nathaniel Clyne gets forward to make the extra man and neat snappy passing from Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho find him in a pocket of space in the box.

His low shot is slow and central though and Fraser Forster gobbles up.

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

Steve Claridge

Ex-Portsmouth striker on BBC Radio 5 live

"It is poor play from Mamadou Sakho, he lets Mane turn, does not get close to him, it is really poor defending."

GOAL - Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

Sadio Mane

It has been brewing.

Liverpool give away the ball in midfield as Steven Davis buzzes around like an angry wasp.

Graziano Pelle slides a neat little pass to Sadio Mane who stands up Mamadou Sakho, knocks the ball past him, beats him in a two-yard foot race and finally fires powerfully across Simon Mignolet.

Game on.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Steve Claridge

Ex-Portsmouth striker on BBC Radio 5 live

"Victor Wanyama has made a massive difference. All of a sudden the game has shut down for Liverpool, Where as before it was such an open game."

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Another cross and again the Liverpool goal is living a charmed life.

Virgil van Dijk meets a deep delivery at the far stick and directs the ball back through the six-yard box.

Sadio Mane stretches closest, but no-one can get a touch.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Hearts in mouths in the Liverpool defence as Simon Mignolet comes for a cross and u-turns halfway through his journey. Graziano Pelle cannot punish him, directing a header just wide.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool with some more intelligent probing - it is like having the world's best prostate doctor at you.

But Emre Can cannot connect cleanly as he attempts to sweep Adam Lallana's threaded pass goalwards.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool seem to have been stirred by that let-off.

They suddenly look lively up front with Divock Origi rattling in a decent effort from a tight angle that Fraser Forster beats away and Adam Lallana almost finds Joe Allen with an audacious little scooped through ball.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp celebrates Simon Mignolet's penalty save
Reuters

Jurgen Klopp celebrated that penalty save like a goal, uppercutting the air and bawling to the sky yards away from a peeved Ronald Koeman.

You can see why other managers may be less-than-enthusiastic about his "enthusiasm" and "energy" on the touchline.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Steve Claridge

Ex-Portsmouth striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Graziano Pelle wins a penalty after a challenge with Martin Skrtel
Reuters

"You can see Skrtel actually pulling down his shirt, but his is half way up his back so I think it is six of one and half a dozen of the other."

GREAT SAVE!

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Simon Mignolet save's Sadio Mane's penalty
PA

Simon Mignolet plunges to his right to push away Sadio Mane's penalty kick that was at a nice height and nothing-much pace.

Is this just not going to be Southampton's day?

PENALTY TO SOUTHAMPTON

Roger East awards Southampton a penalty
Reuters

Graziano Pelle hauled down by Martin Skrtel and Roger East points to the spot and issues yellow.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Steve Claridge

Ex-Portsmouth striker on BBC Radio 5 live

"Southampton have gone three up front with Mane, Pelle and Long. It is nice and positive. How that works against a Liverpool side which has broken so quickly against them remains to be seen."

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Ronald Koeman and Jurgen Klopp give instructions to their players
Reuters

Southampton have started well.

Lots of tempo, Sadio Mane getting on the ball plenty and Emre Can picking up a booking at the base of Liverpool's midfield for a mis-timed challenge.

KICK-OFF

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Changes for both sides at the break and they make sense.

Victor Wanyama and Sadio Mane are on in place of Jordie Clasie and Dusan Tadic to bring stability and cutting edge to Southampton's midfield.

Martin Skrtel replaces the booked Dejan Lovren who struggled against Shane Long's pace in the first half.

We are back underway.

BBC

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Steve Claridge

Ex-Portsmouth striker on BBC Radio 5 live

"Southampton have changed their shape, they are now tougher to open up but it has compromised their attack. If they had started like this they would be fine but at 2-0 down they need a threat from somewhere."

HT: Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

The stats break down fairly evenly, but there was a period after Philippe Coutinho's first that Southampton went a little AWOL in defence and concentration.

They conceded Daniel Sturridge's second and could have shipped a couple more as well.

The half-time whistle blows and the jeers come tumbling down.

For Dejan Lovren?

Could be either.

Ryan Bertrand wraps his foot around the free-kick, but there is not enough bite to bring the ball down under then crossbar and his shot is waved on its way by Simon Mignolet.

Next year will be Liverpool's year Yanis? For cliche's sake, even if you are thinking it, don't say it.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Saints fans rise off their seats as Steven Davis steps over the top of Dusan Tadic's pass, allowing it to run to Graziano Pelle in the box. The big Italian swivels, but not quite slickly enough and he can only send a scruffy shot well wide.

Southampton did seem to be teetering on the brink of 3-0 and out, but they look to have stabilised a bit now, dispensing with the kamikaze high line and starting to grind their way back into the game.

DISALLOWED GOAL

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

The assistant referee flags for offside
Reuters

Liverpool think that this is going the way of the Captial One Cup quarter-final fast.

But hold up.

Joe Allen's snapped shot as a loose ball dropped to him from a corner may have beaten Fraser Forster and found the net, but Mamadou Sakho was a little slow out of the box and is adjudged to have interfered with play.

Fair enough. He had to basically jump over the ball to allow it through to goal.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool are being given far too much space to counter into by Southampton.

Joe Allen should score after the visitors disappear upfield in a plait of jet streams, but the Welshman sidefoots into Fraser Forster's shins from eight yards out.

Then Daniel Sturridge's shot is tame as the hosts are caught three on three again.

Southampton need to regroup rather than go chasing a goal too soon. Nick one and Liverpool may get edgy. Concede one and they won't be.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Steve Claridge

Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge scores
AFP

"Southampton are massively open to the counter attack.

"It was a great run from Divock Origi but how Daniel Sturridge digs that out when he is almost stood on the ball takes Forster by surprise.

"He digs it out and smashes it. Neither defender gets close enough when they should have gone to the ball. The amount of power he gets from such little back lift makes him such a threat."
