That's all from Britannia Stadium. Not the most exciting start, but it sure made up for it at the end. Head here for match reaction, or head here for a developing match report.

Stoke 1-1 Sunderland

The travelling Sunderland fans are celebrating like they have won the game. You can hardly blame them.

Stoke 1-1 Sunderland

Martin Keown

Former Arsenal defender on Final Score

"Defoe has been fantastic for them. It was never in doubt. Perfect finish from Sunderland's point of view."

FULL-TIME

Stoke 1-1 Sunderland

Talk about drama. Sunderland still look like they will drop into the bottom three, but how big is this point?

GOAL - Stoke 1-1 Sunderland

Jermain Defoe (94 mins)

No mistake from the spot by Sunderland's top scorer.  A massive goal for them and the whole relegation fight.

PENALTY to Sunderland

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Geoff Cameron fouls

Geoff Cameron pushed Jermain Defoe.

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Sunderland are leaving big gaps at the back as they search for an equaliser. Gianelli Imbula looks like he is clear for Stoke but checks back inside and ends up firing wide.

YELLOW CARD

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Peter Crouch

Seb Larsson is booked for a high challenge on Peter Crouch. Stoke have a free-kick deep in Black Cats territory - not what Sunderland need right now, and Glenn Whelan almost makes things worse when he shoots narrowly wide.

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Seb Larsson fires a free-kick straight at Stoke keeper Jakob Haugaard, and Sunderland are running out of time here.

SUBSTITUTION

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Sunderland are finding it hard enough to create chances, and now Stoke are bringing on another defender - Marc Muniesa is replacing Charlie Adam.

Muniesa is involved already, putting a Sunderland corner behind for another corner. Peter Crouch heads this one clear.

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Sam Allardyce gestures
PA

Another sniff for Jermain Defoe, but his effort is deflected wide this time. It's not happening for him at the moment.

SUBSTITUTION

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

A change for both teams - Seb Larsson replaces Jan Kirchhoff for Sunderland and Xherdan Shaqiri makes way for Mame Diouf for Stoke.

Sunderland, more than ever, need some Jermain Defoe magic - but they will have to wait a bit longer... Defoe has just had a rare effort on goal, but saw the ball fly over the bar.

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Bad news, Sunderland fans - Palace had their penalty saved. You are still in the relegation zone, as things stand.

Back at the Britannia, the Black Cats remain on the back foot and remain a goal down.

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Mark Hughes
PA

Some silky skills on display at Britannia Stadium - by Stoke boss Mark Hughes, who indulges in some ball-juggling on the touchline.

Stoke continue to attack, and Jon Walters and Peter Crouch combine to get on the end of a cross... but forget all that because up at St James' Park Crystal Palace have a penalty!

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Another Stoke free-kick - eventually - Xherdan Shaqiri takes his time before lifting the ball into the box from near the right-hand corner flag. Jan Kirchhoff heads it clear.

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Still time for Sunderland to get something here but they are going to have to improve up front. Stoke, meanwhile, have just seen Charlie Adam bend a free-kick over the bar.

It gets worse for Sunderland - Newcastle have scored, meaning the Black Cats are in the relegation zone as things stand.

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Sunderland are still pressing but do not have anything to show for it. The Black Cats want a penalty when Duncan Watmore is held off by Erik Pieters inside the area. Referee Craig Pawson is having none of it.

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Chris Sutton

Former Norwich striker on Final Score

"That was a good chance for Defoe. As soon as he shifted it inside I was thinking goal."

SUBSTITUTION

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Marko Arnautovic
Reuters

Big Sam has seen enough. Wahbi Khazri and Fabio Borini are the men to make way for Dame N'Doye and Duncan Watmore

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Sunderland are waiting to make that switch. They are enjoying a decent spell of pressure and Jermain Defoe has just hammered a shot over the bar.

SUBSTITUTION

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

A Sunderland change is looming too - two, actually. Dame N'Doye and Duncan Watmore are about to be unleashed.

SUBSTITUTION

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

An enforced change for Stoke. Potters scorer Marko Arnautovic came into the game with a hamstring injury and it looks like he has tweaked it again. He hobbles off, and on comes Jon Walters. Not a bad way for Arnautovic to sign off though...

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Not much of a response from Sunderland since going behind. Stoke continue to look dangerous, though.

"It was a good finish but horrendous defending from Sunderland.

"That is an enormous goal. Sunderland need to find a way back and quickly."

Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Martin Keown

Former Arsenal defender on Final Score

"Crouch has got his hands all over the back of Kaboul, then it is bad defending but for me that was a foul."

GOAL - Stoke 1-0 Sunderland

Marko Arnautovic (50 mins)

Controversy here - was there a foul by Peter Crouch in the build-up. Sam Allardyce thinks so.. but he would, wouldn't he.

Charlie Adam lifted the ball into the area from the left, Crouch held off Younes Kaboul - he had two hands on his back - as he won the header, which bounced into the path of Marko Arnautovic, who powered home a low shot through Vito Mannone.

Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Sunderland get another chance to try out their attacking set-pieces, after Geoff Cameron blocks Yann M'Vila. Cameron heads clear when the ball comes into the box, however. Chance gone.

Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

The Black Cats do better with their next ball forward, a free-kick chipped into the box by Deandre Yedlin. Younes Kaboul gets on the end of it but his header bounces straight at Jakob Haugaard.

Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Sam Allardyce

Sam Allardyce is still making his way back to the dug-out as his Sunderland side launch a long ball forward. It goes straight out of play.

Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

The sun is still shining at Britannia Stadium as Stoke get the second half under way. No changes from either side at the break.

HALF-TIME

Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Lamine Kone

Stoke have had the better chances, but that is not saying an awful lot...

Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Well, Sunderland DID have a pop at goal in the end, just not from that free-kick.

The visitors earned a corner, which was only cleared to the edge of Stoke's box. The Black Cats defender had a lot of time as he raced back to turn and shoot but didn't know it. He fell as he swivelled and his shot ended up about a mile wide.

Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Can Sunderland do any better this time? They have a free-kick about 40 yards out and Patrick van Aanholt is going to chip it into the Stoke box...

Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Peter Crouch
Reuters

Stoke's crosses look more dangerous just because Peter Crouch is looking to get on the end of them. He seems to be succeeding most of the time, to be honest, but on this occasion he cannot generate the power to trouble Vito Mannone.

Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Jan Kirchoff
PA

Sunderland are still pressing, mind, and still firing balls into the box. More hopeful than anything else, though, and Wahbi Khazri's next delivery goes straight behind for a goal-kick.

Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

... I was trying to build excitement there. It didn't work. Wahbi Khazri's corner was easily cleared.

Stoke 0-0 Sunderland

Sunderland are struggling to create chances in open play but they are always dangerous from set-pieces. Probably not the best idea for Stoke defender Phil Bardsley to needlessly give one away, then, with a stray header...
