What a night.

We're taking this down now, Match of the Day is just about to start on BBC One and on the website.

Enjoy/cringe...

'It has ended shabbily'

ICELAND KNOCK ENGLAND OUT

John Murray

BBC Radio 5 live commentator

It had to happen very quickly, Roy knew he was in a position after this result and performance that there was no other option. He is somewhat ashen faced. It's embarrassing and I feel sorry for him because he is a decent man but it has ended very shabbily for him.

'The next manager has a tough job on his hands'

ICELAND KNOCK ENGLAND OUT

England goalkeeper Joe Hart: "As a group it is down to us. All the plans are put in place, we knew everything about Iceland but ultimately we didn't perform. Personally I didn't perform.

"It's not a question of wanting it, there's nothing we want more. They are just words though. We were in a good place but we haven't done it. We will get a lot of flak and we deserve it. We will learn from this and try and bring English football back to where it belongs.

"We have put it in a low place.

"We just couldn't find a way back into the game. The next manager has a tough job on his hands. We worked hard but with no success. That is how this team will be remembered."

FA Statement

Statement from The Football Association:

Like the nation, we are disappointed to lose this evening and that our run in Euro 2016 has come to a premature end.  We had high hopes of progressing through to the latter stages of the competition and accept that we have not met our own expectations or those of the country.

We back Roy Hodgson’s decision to step down as England manager and will discuss next steps imminently.

For now, we congratulate Iceland for reaching the quarter final and wish them well against France at the weekend.

Finally, our sincere thanks go to the travelling fans for their incredible support tonight and to everyone back home for getting behind the team.

'We shocked the world'

ICELAND KNOCK ENGLAND OUT

Iceland defender Kari Arnason: "We kept our composure and defended well. We all believed, the rest of the world didn't but we did. I am overcome with joy. The gaffer had never lost to England, he told us and we had to keep it up. When Jamie Vardy came on he had the pace but we kept it under control.

"This is without a doubt the biggest result in Icelandic football history. We've shocked the world."

'No obstacle too big'

ICELAND KNOCK ENGLAND OUT

Iceland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson: "I was more relaxed than during the game against Austria. If someone had told me a few years ago that we would reach the last eight I have to say I would not believe it.

"No obstacle is too big for these guys now."

ROY HODGSON GONE

Can you define 'a fantastic journey' Roy?

'Time for someone else'

ROY HODGSON GONE

England boss Roy Hodgson: "We are out of the Euros so now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of a hungry and extremely talented group of players. They have done fantastically, and done everything asked of them. When I arrived I was told that players would not turn up or pull out at the last minute but I haven't seen any of that.

"Gary Neville and Ray Lewington have asked me to speak on their behalf. They arrived with me and will leave with me and I'd like to thank them for the major part they have played in team preparations. Finally, I want to thank the support staff at the FA, and the fans.

"It's been a fantastic journey the last four years, I will look back on it with pride. I want to thank the media for the support you've given me for in the last four years. I'm sorry it's ended in another exit but these things happen and I wish you the very best and I hope you can still see a England team in a final of a major tournament very soon, something that we have been unable to deliver."

It looks like Roy Hodgson had that statement written in his pocket going into the game. That's confidence!

I think he's had it in his pocket since 2012...

'Hodgson won't be fondly remembered'

England 1-2 Iceland

John Murray

BBC Radio 5 live commentator

Roy Hodgson is clearly hurting and the decision has been made to make that one statement. I expect there to be media commitments in Chantilly. He's had three tournaments. He's had 56 matches - one more than Ron Greenwood. He only lost eight games. But England didn't produce when it really, really mattered.

As England manager, when it comes to his record, he won't be fondly remembered for his results.

Gareth Southgate is probably in the best position - the possible replacement, it is slim pickings.

"They came with me as part of my coaching team and they will leave with me. I would like to thank all the supporters, staff, the FA and the fans.

Roy Hodgson will get the bullet 100%. But Lewington and Gary Neville have also got to be binned. Think the Neville myth has exploded anyway!
