'I have no reason to be disatisfied'

England 1-0 Portugal

Roy Hodgson speaking to BBC Sport: "It is often a struggle when you play against 10 men. We would have preferred a 11 v 11 game, to flow more in attack and in defence.

"We were on the ball and trying to find the way through a packed and well organised Portugal defence.

"I am pleased we kept our composure and patience,  pleased with the clean sheet. The longer the game wore on, we looked more dangerous, looked as if we could score the goal. The result came from a long period of sustained pressure.

"I don't intend to come on radio to tell you what I think of what worked and what didn't.

"The players worked hard to keep their shape and build attacks. It is our third win and one against a Portugal team ranked higher than us in the Fifa rankings, so no reason to be dissatisfied.

"Have I decided my best 11? That is difficult and will depend on the night.

"I am happy I have got 16/17 good players and happy with the options available to us."

Eddie Cafe: Hodgson says it's difficult to play against 10 men. Trust me, it's even more difficult against 11

Bob Walker-Hall: England played brilliantly against Germany and poorly tonight. Hope Roy goes with the Germany setup, 4-2-3-1!

Matthew Harris: Rend your garments, howl at the moon: a pre-tournament friendly was boring and inconsequential. The end is nigh.

'I'm not going to criticise'

England 1-0 Portugal

England manager Roy Hodgson on ITV: "I'm not prepared to accept that we didn't play well. We looked good, we had composure throughout the game and it would have been better to play against 11. I'm very pleased with three wins, we never looked like conceding a goal.

"I'm not prepared to add my voice to the debate. We need all of our players playing well. In every game some people have a really good night, I'm not prepared to stand here and criticise some players. If I start being dissaitisfied with three wins against Australia, Turkey and Portugal I'm going to be a hard coach to satisfy."

England 1-0 Portugal

Roy Hodgson says he is pleased with the clean sheet and believes England scored after a spell of sustained possession.

A thriller

The Three Lions have conceded just three goals in their last 11 games at Wembley.

Portugal failed to muster a single shot on target in the 90 minutes.

Roy Hodgson's interview coming up. What can he take from that lot?

'An abject performance'

England 1-0 Portugal

Danny Mills

Ex-England defender for BBC Radio 5 live

"There are five positions up for grabs, I didn't see the players going flat out, saying 'I want that starting place' it was just a flat, abject performance."

The Portugal back four that started tonight's game were 30, 38, 34 and 32 years old. Yet Roy Hodgson, an international football manager, didn't have the foresight or the gumption to give Jamie Vardy license to run at them and their old legs. I give up.

Andrew, Richhill.

If Hodgson isn't going to use Vardy properly, then send him home. Wasted playing wide with no balls in behind.

'We need to play better'

England 1-0 Portugal

England captain Wayne Rooney on ITV: "We won the game but it was always difficult. They went to 10 men and that can happen in football. We were the better team.

"We need to play better, we know that. But it's a good sign that we didn't play well and won the game.

"The manager is working on the three up front. There are 23 men in the squad, it's about all of us.

"We are ready. We haven't been at our best but we have won the three games."

Look at the positives

England 1-0 Portugal

Danny Mills

Ex-England defender for BBC Radio 5 live

"Look at the positives: No injuries, a clean sheet and the win.

"Unfortunately that does not tell the true story. That is a worrying performance. You are looking for the team to be confident, bright and sharp but that never materialised."

Has Roy caused more problems?

England 1-0 Portugal

Jermaine Jenas

Ex-Spurs & England midfielder on 5 live

"It was a tough night, as a player you want to get through unscathed and get on the plane to France.

"From Roy Hodgson's perspective, I am not sure if he has caused himself more problems with the Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Wayne Rooney situation. They have got the win. The players that came off the bench had a positive impact. I felt the team was more creative and enjoyable to watch with what we ended with."

I call that great game management from England. Bore them to tears and catch them by surprise. The stuff of champions.

Andy in London

Has Roy enrolled at the Louis Van Gaal school of unorthodox and mind numbing tactics? Dross.

RE, Pope-21:11. I arrange my DVDs by mentality. Predator is in the "ooooh another special edition!" section with Star Wars. Stand By Me is in the "feeling reflective" section. And so on...

England win. Football was the loser. England played players out of position and an early red card for Portugal didn't help the occasion.

England's next match is the real deal. Is Roy Hodgson any the wiser?

CLOSE!

England 1-0 Portugal

It's a free header for William Carvalho but he floats it over the top. Shoddy.

Three minutes added on. This - if you want a super positive line - will be England's first win over Portugal since 1998.

Portugal boss Fernando Santos suddenly decides he wants a result and replaces Ricardo Carvalho with former Swansea forward Eder. Jordan Henderson replaces Dele Alli.

'Perfect contact'

England 1-0 Portugal

Jermaine Jenas

Ex-Spurs & England midfielder on 5 live

"That was perfect from Raheem Sterling, when he whips it in, there are willing runners from Chris Smalling, who makes perfect contact and glances it into that right hand corner. "

Well I never did. England score from a set-piece as a free-kick is cleared, Raheem Sterling sends the ball back in and Chris Smalling is up there to nod into the net.

Shades of Mark Wright v Egypt. 1990.

CLOSE!

England 0-0 Portugal

Portugal sub Ricardo Quaresma turns Chris Smalling inside out and gets a shot off from very wide on the left - think Harry Kane v Arsenal - but he bends the effort just wide.

England 0-0 Portugal

A frisson of excitement! Adam Lallana puts in an excellent cross - sorry, a good cross - which is hurriedly stabbed away. But Raheem Sterling finds Daniel Sturridge in the area, he has half a yard of space, but can only mishit a pass out wide when perhaps the shot was on.

Is this Jose Mourinho joining in with a Mexican wave?

Snap shot from Daniel Sturridge - hit early and hit well. But hit wide.

The TV commentators are trying to convince me - and you - that Jack Wilshere has made a difference since coming on. I haven't seen one. There's still nothing happening.

What on earth can Roy Hodgson make of this?

England boring Wembley

Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

You know it's bad when The Mexican Wave starts - an event just as tedious as the match itself.

Maybe England's players do not want to risk injury but so far there has been little positive to report from this Wembley yawnfest.
