It's advantage Barcelona going into the final day of the season next Saturday.
One more win and the title is theirs after a derby demolition of Espanyol.
Real Madrid were 10 points behind Barcelona on 1 April.
Zinedine Zidane's side go into the final day of the season one point behind the leaders after an 11th straight La Liga win.
That's a pretty good effort by Zidane.
Plaudits have been pouring in for Diego Simeone and his Atletico Madrid players after overcoming Bayern Munich to book a place in the Champions League final.
But this proved one hurdle too many for Simeone's men.
They can still finish level on points with leaders Barcelona but Barca have a superior head-to-head record against Atletico.
Barcelona are one win away from clinching a 24th La Liga title. Atletico's hopes are over after a shock defeat at relegated Levante.
A two-horse race heading into the last day of the La Liga season?
2...Real Madrid 87pts
3...Atletico Madrid 85pts
Are Atletico's title hopes over? They have fallen behind to relegated Levante with two minutes left.
They are out of the title equation as it stands.
Two minutes to go.
Barcelona are heading into the final day of the season with a one-point lead - unless there are any late twists.
Valencia's hopes of scoring a third fade as Rodrigo is shown a red card for dissent.
Espanyol's derby demolition is complete as Neymar adds his team's fifth from close range.
If Valencia and Levante score in the next few minutes without replay, the title is Barcelona's.
What. A. Goal.
Andre Gomes is well outside Real's penalty area when he pulls the trigger - and Kiko Casilla is left flapping at fresh air.
Ten minutes remaining.
Still no sign of a winner for Atletico Madrid.
They might be in the Champions League final but is today the day they blew their hopes of winning La Liga?
A gift for Rafinha as Espanyol's keeper spills in the ball in his path and the Barcelona substitute scores with his first touch.
Espanyol are doing no favours for the two chasing Madrid clubs.
Real Madrid fans young and old are enjoying this one...
Twenty minutes left.
Atletico need to score otherwise they are going into the final day of the season two points behind leaders Barca as it stands.
Luis Suarez has 37 La Liga goals this season.
That's one more than Espanyol have managed all season.
Any sign of a winner from Atletico?
Not really. Bottom club Levante are going down fighting.
Atletico started the day second in the table but are currently third - two points behind leaders Barca.
Remember Liverpool versus Everton a few weeks ago? This is a just as one-sided derby.
Luis Suarez gets his second and Barca's third with a powerful header from a corner.
There's no stopping Suarez this season. He gets better and better.
This is how the top of La Liga looks with around half an hour remaining:
2...Real Madrid 87pts
3...Atletico Madrid 86pts
Cancel the title party in Barcelona.
No sooner than Valencia had pulled a goal back than Cristiano Ronaldo - who else? - restores Real's two-goal cushion after a powerful run and finish.
It's fast moving at the top of La Liga.
Valencia pull a goal back at the Bernabeu after poor marking and all of a sudden Real's fans look nervous.
A Valencia equaliser and another by Levante...and Barca could be champions.
Alves to Messi to Suarez. GOAL!
Luis Suarez lashes home after a beautifully worked move carved Espanyol's defence wide open. The former Liverpool man fires home from an angle inside the area.
Surely now Barca are heading into the final day of the season top of La Liga.
Atletico had kept four successive clean sheets in La Liga before today and won their previous three domestic games 1-0. They need a second today to keep the pressure on Barca.
It's advantage Barcelona on the penultimate weekend of the La Liga title race but can Atletico restore the lead at Levante? Will Valencia damage Real's hopes with a comeback at the Bernabeu?
A H-U-G-E 45 minutes coming up. We're back under way in all three games.
Talking of close title races...
PSV Eindhoven snatched the Dutch league from Ajax on a dramatic final day of the season in the Netherlands.
The teams went into the final round of games level on points, with Ajax in control by virtue of having a six-goal advantage in goal difference.
But the Amsterdam side could only draw 1-1 with lowly De Graafschap to open the door to their rivals.
PSV took advantage, as two Luuk de Jong goals and one from Jurgen Locadia gave them a 3-1 win at PEC Zwolle.
Two points separating the top three with one-and-a-half-games remaining.
