Scottish sides ahead at halfway stage

FT: Aberdeen 3-1 Fola Esch, Hearts 2-1 Infonet

That's enough from me on what ended up a good evening for Aberdeen and a so-so one for Hearts.

Both sides should be sharper after their first outings of the season, so let's hope they can get the job done next week.

Thanks for your company and safe travels if you are making your way to Luxembourg or Estonia.

BBC Radio Scotland will have both second legs covered next week.

Hearts are first up on Wednesday, with a 17:00 kick-off. Aberdeen are in action on the following day in a 16:45 start.

Make sure you join us for those.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes

Talking to BBC Radio Scotland

"It's a good night after looking like it might be a frustrating night. The amount of chances we created - we had two goals chopped off that shouldn't have been, their keeper had a brilliant night and we had one cleared off the line. It could have been seven or eight but thankfully we managed to get three.

"We wore them down after we generated a better tempo after the break. McGinn and Hayes were relentless in the second half.

"That game will help us be game ready for the next leg. We will be better again for that experience. The team should be feeling good about themselves because their desire was fantastic."

Hearts head coach Robbie Neilson

Talking to BBC Radio Scotland

"We made it hard for ourselves by losing the first goal but they showed good character to come back.

"The players were rusty and it took a while to find that competitive edge but it will come

"It will be a really tough game over there. We really need to score to put it to bed. We're ahead at the halfway stage and the players will be another week sharper."

FT: Hearts 2-1 Infonet

Hearts' winner came from an own goal on 36 minutes. It was all a bit scrappy from the men in maroon but they will be happy to have their noses in front after conceding the first goal.

Will another week of training be enough to get them up to speed for a tricky second leg?

FULL-TIME

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

Hearts hold a narrow advantage ahead of next week's trip to Tallinn but that away goal may cause head coach Robbie Neilson a few sleepless nights before then.

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

A late chance for Hearts as Andrei Kalimulin, scorer of that earlier own goal, heads over his own crossbar to clear. The set-piece comes to nothing and that is pretty much that.

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

Hearts are hanging on a bit here. 'Nothing daft lads.' is the message from the bench. Well, something along those lines, with the instructions probably a little more technical.

'Tough ask for Hearts to progress'

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

Former Hearts midfielder and BBC Scotland pundit Allan Preston: "Hearts have been really rusty, which is to be expected, but Infonet have played really well and caused Hearts lots of problems going forward. It is going to be a tough ask for them in Estonia next week. This team are technically very gifted - they can certainly play."

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

Hearts must stay switched on in these closing minutes. The visitors have played some nice stuff and can break at speed.

A long-range free-kick whizzes into the arms of keeper Jack Hamilton. An impressive strike from all of 40 yards but a comfortable save.

Dons 'will be happy'

FT: Aberdeen 3-1 Fola Esch

Former Aberdeen captain and manager Willie Miller: "Aberdeen are a better side than Fola, but the visitors have put up a really good performance. They have looked dangerous in attack but weak in defence at times. The goalkeeper makes some awful decisions.  I think Derek McInnes will be happy with what his side have done.  They have an excellent opportunity to progress."

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

The home side are huffing and puffing in search of a third goal. Perry Kitchen is not long on for Prince Buaben in the middle of the park.

FULL-TIME

Aberdeen 3-1 Fola Esch

Two goals in stoppage-time rescue what was looking like a rather embarrassing night for Aberdeen. Now they take a healthy lead to Luxembourg next week.

GOAL

Aberdeen 3-1 Fola Esch (Rooney)

Suddenly it's all rosy in the Aberdeen garden as Adam Rooney keeps his cool to convert the penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way.

PENALTY

Aberdeen 2-1 Fola Esch

Handball. A penalty for the Dons - with what might be the last kick of the ball.

GOAL

Aberdeen 2-1 Fola Esch (McGinn)

A shot from Niall McGinn squirms under the goalkeeper after taking a deflection. The linesman has his flag up - is that a third disallowed goal of the evening? No, the ref has a chat with his assistant then awards the goal.

CLOSE!

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

Chance for the visitors as Jevgeni Harin, who scored Infonet's opener, cuts in from the right, but his left-footed effort is deflected narrowly wide.

Injury time bonus

Aberdeen 1-1 Fola Esch

We're into the last minute and Aberdeen are all square with the visitors from Luxembourg. Can the hosts find a winner in the seven minutes of added time? The visiting bench is not happy but there have been a few Fola players going down with cramp and what not...

Aberdeen 1-1 Fola Esch

Corner number 15 for Aberdeen sees the ball fall to Jayden Stockley but his effort takes a touch off a defender and floats up into the grateful arms of the goalkeeper.

Nifty Nicholson is Hearts best outlet

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

Richard Wilson

BBC Scotland at Tynecastle

"Hearts continue to be ragged, in some of their passing, decision-making and defensive resolve. They have not created any clear chances in the second half, and have also had to be alert to the dangers of Infonet on the break.

"The home side's best chance to break through a well-organised side is to work the ball to Nicholson, who's jinking past opponents with relative ease."

DISALLOWED GOAL

Aberdeen 1-1 Fola Esch

For the second time this evening, an Ash Taylor header from a corner is ruled out. Maybe a foul on the goalie? The BBC Scotland team are unsure.

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

Hearts make a change, their first of the evening, with winger Billy King on for striker Juanma.

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

With so much going on at Pittodrie, I've just got time to tell you that Hearts are still looking a bit shaky when facing the swift counter-attacks from the Estonians.

Good save

Aberdeen 1-1 Fola Esch

It's corner number 10 for Aberdeen as Thomas Hym tips over an acrobatic overhead kick from Jayden Stockley over his crossbar. The set-piece from Niall McGinn comes to nothing...

Dons stunned

Aberdeen 1-1 Fola Esch

Martin Dowden

BBC Sport Scotland at Pittodrie

"Incredible drama at Pittodrie. No sooner had Aberdeen broken Fola's resistance through Logan, they then go up the park and net a shock equaliser through their captain Julien Klein. Again it seemed to be a case of how many for Aberdeen who were utterly dominant."

GOAL

Aberdeen 1-1 Fola Esch (Klein)

It looked like the team from Luxembourg were crumbling but they hit back straight away as the Dons go to sleep from a corner and French skipper Julien Klein tucks in the equaliser.

GOAL

Aberdeen 1-0 Fola Esch (Logan)

Adam Rooney gets a touch on a corner and Shay Logan does very well to hook in a volley. It's been coming...

Aberdeen go ahead

HITS THE WOODWORK

Aberdeen 0-0 Fola Esch

Aberdeen are really knocking on the door as Jonny Hayes thunders in a cross for Adam Rooney to crash an effort against the post.

KICK-OFF

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

The second half is just starting at Tynecastle. Can Hearts add to their lead?

Rherras 'a real find for Hearts'

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

Former Hearts midfielder & BBC Scotland pundit Allan Preston: "Faycal Rherras looks a find, a really good player. This guy looks top drawer, two-footed, and he takes all the set-pieces."

Aberdeen 0-0 Fola Esch

Adam Rooney looks certain to score as he connects with a back post header but it's kept out by a defender on the line.

Moments earlier, a Kenny McLean nod was well gathered by Fola keeper Thomas Hym. It's all Aberdeen...

Rodgers' first game ends in draw

Friendly result: NK Celje 2-2 Celtic

Meanwhile, news from Slovenia, where Brendan Rodgers' first game in charge of Celtic finished in a 2-2 draw.  The Scottish champions, with 18-year-old Kristoffer Ajer making his debut at centre-back, trailed 2-0 at half-time at NK Celje.  But second-half goals from Nadir Ciftci and Tom Rogic, after Rodgers fielded a completely different 11 after the interval, avoided defeat.

Dons on the front foot

Aberdeen 0-0 Fola Esch

Martin Dowden

BBC Sport Scotland at Pittodrie

"Much better from Aberdeen. All over Foal Esch now with McGinn going close a couple of times and two up front now with Rooney coming on. The tempo is there, the crowd are more upbeat. They just need that vital opener."

Hearts ahead but must be wary

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

Richard Wilson

BBC Scotland at Tynecastle

"Hearts have cause to feel better about the balance of the tie, having scored twice, but it is still capable of being a troubling assignment. Infonet have attacked with relish down their left, and the home side have looked uncertain in defence at times.

"Hearts can be enthused, though, by the sprightliness of Sam Nicholson, the assurance of Faycal Rherras, and the always composed Arnaud Djoum. The first instinct will be to seek another goal to strengthen their lead, but Hearts will also need to be wary of the way the Estonian side can break upfield with menace."

Dons look to Rooney

Aberdeen 0-0 Fola Esch

Aberdeen make a positive change, introducing last season's top scorer Adam Rooney for central midfielder Willo Flood.

The striker is involved straight away and tries to lift a shot over the keeper, who had slipped, but Thomas Hym recovers to make the save.

Aberdeen 0-0 Fola Esch

The visitors are resorting to some rough house tactics, giving away a series of free-kicks near the edge of their penalty area. Niall McGinn fires one on target bu the keeper is right behind it.

Aberdeen 0-0 Fola Esch

Aberdeen have their tails up as Jonny Hayes pounces on a defensive slip and Jayden Stockley sees a rather weak shot cleared off the line.

GREAT SAVE!

Aberdeen 0-0 Fola Esch

So close for Aberdeen as Ash Taylor powers a header towards goal which goalkeeper Thomas Hym does brilliantly to keep out.

Moments later Taylor does well to prevent Hadji netting at the other end. A brisk start to the second half.

HALF-TIME

Hearts 2-1 Infonet

Well, Hearts will be happy to be leading at the interval after conceding the opening goal but the visitors from Estonia have been lively.

Dons with much to do

Aberdeen 0-0 Fola Esch

Martin Dowden

BBC Sport Scotland at Pittodrie

"This match started with an air of 'how many' for Aberdeen. Fola Esch hit the post early on with the chance of the match and suddenly everyone realised this was no formality. Aberdeen have threatened but haven't been ruthless enough. An important second half awaits in what's proving to be a testing tie."
