Goodnight

FT: Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Well European nights in mid-July are only ever memorable for the wrong reasons and no Celtic fan will be forgetting this one in a hurry. Humbled by a side of part-timers from Gibraltar, a country with a population half the size of Celtic Park.

The Brendan Rodgers era begins in ignominious fashion with arguably the worst result in the club's history. He will want to limit the damage with a convincing victory in the second leg at Parkhead next Wednesday to see Celtic through to the next round.

The likes of Gordon Strachan and Neil Lennon have suffered bad European defeats early in their spells in charge to go on and become successful Celtic managers, and the former Liverpool boss will be confident he can follow suit. However, this result will always be a black mark on his record and Celtic's reputation.

Fair play to the heroes of Lincoln Red Imps though. They earned the biggest result of their lives and deserve to enjoy the celebrations.

Thanks for your company and contributions this evening. Keep across the BBC Sport Scotland website for all the reaction to tonight's shock result.

Goodnight.

Liam, Glasgow: "Ignominy for celtic tonight. For Brendan to be blaming the pitch and making excuses is an insult to all celtic fans. Humiliation, plain and simple."

Joe, London: "Rodgers no idea like at Liverpool always saying unlucky, now no embarrassment what is he thinking, will be a disaster appointment."

Clive, Liverpool: "Thought the Scottish wanted to stay in Europe."

We've just beaten Celtic 1-0. It's unbelievable. We are going to have to put in ten times the shift we've done here if we are going to go through.

'We're making no excuses'

FT: Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

It’s congratulations to them. It’s a good win for them. For us we accept it. Over the course of the two games if we didn’t get through I’d be concerned. We have to put it right in the next game. We’re making no excuses. We’ll be fine for the second game.

Jim: "We know that back at Celtic Park it will be a different story. But that does not excuse that performance - this group of players have been tarnishing the club and its values and history for too long. Major changes are needed."

Anonymous: "Unbelievable - after Andy Murray's heroics our pampered footballers can't beat a bunch of part-timers from a rock in the Med. The worst result in Scottish football history."

FT: Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

There’s no panic. We’ve got enough quality here to get through to the next round. It’s a two-legged affair, our objective is to get through. I think the players gave everything that they had. The message (to the fans) is to stay calm. I always felt this qualification phase would be based on the second legs at home and we’ll need their support.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers

A game that we dominated and had enough chances to score, but sometimes it can happen in games like that, one ball up the pitch and they’re in. We’ve given ourselves a bit of work to do. I saw enough from the game, we created enough to go through. Of course you never want to lose the game. You let the local team have their night, we press on, another week’s training and be better for it. There’s no embarrassment. We never took our chances and they took theirs. The second leg will be different.

Neuchatel Xamax, Artmedia Bratislava -  just two of the names that haunt Celtic fans to this day after they inflicted two of their worst European defeats.

You can now add Lincoln Red Imps to that list, but is this the worst of the lot?

'Celtic were panicking'

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Celtic need to learn from this quickly. They need to get into better habits defensively by not conceding these goals. They were panicking a little bit, trying to rush things. The players know what's coming, they're going to have to deal with it and it's probably deserved.

Geoff, Kelvindale: "If it was a pre-season friendly it would be really embarrassing but a Champions League qualifier? The worst result in the clubs history!"

Do you agree with Geoff, is this the worst result in Celtic's long history?

Liam McLeod

An incomprehensible result in Gibraltar. Celtic are humiliated by the part-timers of Lincoln Red Imps.

FULL-TIME

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

That's it. One of the darkest days in Celtic's history as they go down to the part-timers Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar.

So much hope and hype surrounded the appointment of Brendan Rodgers, and while it is still far too early to judge the manager, he will have some explaining to do after such a miserable performance and result.

Read that again:

CLOSE!

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Nadir Cifti has a headed chance from Janko's cross but can not keep his effort down.

Surely the last chance gone for the Scottish champions.

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

We are into injury time and Celtic are four minutes away from European embarrassment at the hands of the part-timers from Gibraltar.

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

They don't look uncomfortable. They look like they are dealing with everything Celtic can throw at them. It doesn't look good for Celtic.

Former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner on BBC Radio Scotland

Celtic great Pat Bonner says if the Scottish champions lose this match it would be the most humiliating European defeat in their history.

Hard to think of one that tops it.

CLOSE!

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Substitute Nadir Cifti almost gets that elusive equaliser for Celtic. His header from Kieran Tierney's cross is powerful and well placed, but 38-year-old keeper Navas shows youthful reflexes to spring to his left and palm the ball away from goal.

Liam McLeod

It is just not happening for Celtic tonight. At not one single point have they had this game by the scruff of the neck.

HITS THE WOODWORK

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Leigh Griffiths smacks the crossbar for the second time this evening. The striker's powerful free-kick from 20 yards beats the keeper all ends up but crashes back off the woodwork and Nir Bitton can not turn the rebound goalwards.

12 minutes remaining for Celtic to spare their own blushes.

Surely if this scoreline stays the same it would top that dark day at Clyde in the list of Celtic's worst ever results?

@BBCAndyBurke this smells just like Roy Keane's debut against Clyde. Big reputation, bigger humiliation.

Jim, Motherwell: It's only been 30 odd days since Rodgers took charge so we can't read too much into things. But Griffiths out wide, Ambrose reinstalled, Janko in front of Roberts and Allan MIA! Let's hope it improves!

Steph: Lincoln excellent - Celtic a bit of a joke and exactly at the level they deserve, playing in England really? Maybe at conference level! Loyal fans joke team.

Substitution

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Brendan Rodgers makes his last throw of the dice with his final change. Nadir Ciftci comes on for the ineffectual Moussa Dembele.

Ciftci has struggled to win over the Celtic fans since arriving at the club. An equaliser here would do his cause no harm at all.

CLOSE!

The two substitutes combine as James Forrest breaks into the penalty area and squares for Stuart Armstrong, but he blazes his finish over the crossbar.

Celtic have been atrocious, but all credit to the team from Gibraltar. They have displayed commitment and no shortage of skill in earning this lead.

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

In the build-up to this match Lincoln Red Imps captain Roy Chipolina said a victory over his side over Celtic would be arguably the greatest shock in the history of European football.

They are just over 25 minutes away from pulling it off.

@BBCAndyBurke Irrespective of the outcome of this tie, this again amplifies the horrendous state Scottish football is in. 18yrs and counting

@SeniorGarry @BBCAndyBurke it's ridiculous that Lincoln have to waste their time playing these Scottish minnows!!!

CLOSE!

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Is it going to be one of those nights for Celtic? Janko drives to the byline and cuts back to Griffiths in the centre of the goal 8 yards out, but his finish is deflected on to the crossbar and the danger is cleared.

Substitutions

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Brendan Rodgers does not waste much time in making a tactical switch with a double substitution. Stuart Armstrong and James Forrest come on to replace Tom Rogic and Ryan Christie.

CLOSE!

Lincoln Red Imps 1-0 Celtic

Another worrying moment for Celtic as Patiño Blasco lets fly from all of 30 yards but Craig Gordon manages to scramble across to keep it out. The home side's tails are up.

If you were wondering where you had heard the name Lee Casciaro before, he is the man who scored Gibraltar's first ever competitive international goal. And of course, it came against Scotland.
