Good night

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Let's bring the curtain down on what has been an utterly miserable night for Scotland.

Thanks for your company and all of your contributions. Who knows, maybe this is a long con so we can stun England next month... Ahem.

In an after-match news conference that was far from revealing, Gordon Strachan insisted Scotland still have a realistic chance of World Cup qualification. Form can change quickly, he said. It'll have to change pretty dramatically I would reckon if we're to have any prospect of reaching Russia 2018. In one of few negative references, he did describe the two results against Lithuania and Slovakia as "body blows" but he says it's a "crazy group" and Wembley next month offers another opportunity to pick up three points. There was no criticism of the players from Strachan and no answer to questions about his future in the job.

Talk of players showing 'effort/desire' so tedious and flawed. Surely absolute bare minimum expected from those representing their country?

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Certainly no suggestion of Mr Strachan throwing in the towel in this group or any indication that he's questioning his own role.

But he's always been a shrewd operator and a master of deflecting awkward questions.

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan: "We'd like to be better off but we are one point off a play-off place and I've said before that it's a crazy group.

"Form can change in a couple of weeks and this campaign is over a year."

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan: "Every time I get together with these guys they rejuvenate me. We've given it our best shot in terms of trying to pick the best side. I don't think you could ask for more in terms of effort. Okay, decision making could be better but I'm happy with response from the lads every time."

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan: "At this moment in time, the people I feel sorry for are the players. They have put so much work into the last two games. As a group, I'm really proud of them.

"The second group you feel sorry for are the supporters who have come here tonight. I'm not thinking about myself."

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan: "The second goal made a big difference. They went from being a bit laborious to strong. Then you see the size of them and they get a goal from a set-piece."

Agree 100% with @BBCTomEnglish re Lars Lagerbeck. Will take some offer to entice from Swe consultancy role. SFA willing to try? Need change!

At least Scotland had the decency this time to end the non qualifying World Cup campaign in a few days, rather than drag it out.

Is anyone looking at the Group F table and seeing any way back for Scotland?

We're a point off second place with three games gone, so I'm trying to convince myself. It's not working.

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Still no sign of Scotland manager Gordon Strachan. We'll hang on to hear what he has to say.

There are sure to be calls for his head. But who would replace him? I'm struggling to think of any realistic replacements.

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Here's how the table looks.

Are Scotland going to win the five or six games probably needed to finish second? Mmmm...

Into the three lions' den

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Normally, Scotland fans would be full of anticipation ahead of a trip to Wembley.

However, I can't imagine it's going to be a 1970s-style invasion of London this time.

A lot of Tartan Army footsoldiers will be filled with dread at the prospect of facing England next month in the wake of this appalling result.

@BBCSportScot we have no quality and our defense is a mixture of frank spencer and the chuckle brothers

@BBCSportScot thot we had turned the corner under strachan but it's been downhill since rep of ire away and Georgia away

@BBCSportScot I guess we can experiment now...

Blunt in attack

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Slovakian goalkeeper Matus Kozacik hasn't had a serious save to make in a match that was a must-win for Scotland. In contrast to David Marshall who was beaten three times and pulled off a series of decent saves as well.

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

That was Scotland's heaviest competitive defeat since 2009 when Norway knocked in four.

What next?

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

With just four points from three games, Scotland are staring down the barrel of yet another failed qualification campaign.

Yes, Scotland are only three behind the leaders and one behind the teams in second and third but we've already played the teams seeded fifth and sixth.

Next up? A trip to Wembley next month.

Does anyone fancy an upset against England?

What now for Strachan?

Jeering at the end from the Scotland fans, and rueful looks on the faces of the Scotland players. Manager Gordon Strachan stood on the touchline at the end, applauding the away support, but this was another chastening night for the national team.

Comfortably beaten in the end, despite a bright enough display in the opening half, this was a performance grimly undermined by poor defending and a lack of threat in attack. The team has lacked the quality to win against the teams ranked directly above and below them in Group F, which suggests there is no likelihood of finishing above third place.

This was deflating and a wretched outcome for Scotland. The question now is, where does it leave Strachan?

FT: Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Scotland drop to fourth in Group F. England lead the way, with Lithuania and Slovenia in second and third. Slovakia are just one point behind Gordon Strachan's men after three games following their first win of the campaign.

The other full-times were: Slovenia 0-0 England & Lithuania 2-0 Malta

Gordon Strachan's post-match analysis is going to be interesting....

FULL-TIME Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

The cheers of the home fans are almost drowned out by the jeers from the disgruntled Tartan Army. A horrible night for Scotland...

Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

The pain is almost over. But the inquest is only just beginning. Scotland boss Gordon Strachan is going to feel some serious heat after this dismal loss.

GOAL Lithuania 2-0 Malta

Arvydas Novikovas

Ex-Hearts man Arvydas Novikovas doubles Lithuania's lead against Malta. Scotland are now certain to finish the night below Edgaras Jankauskas' side.

Off key, off target

Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Rob Maclean

BBC Scotland

Obviously Scotland's dodgy defending grabs your attention. But what about our attacking? Actually, we're only 8-5 down on attempts on target. Sadly, none of ours were ever going in. Three of theirs have.

Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Leigh Griffiths continues to look lively and he's almost on to a slack pass-back but the big goalie Matus Kozacik is off his marks swiftly to block at the striker's feet.

Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Ikechi Anya does well to dip a shoulder and beat his man in the box. His drilled delivery flashes across the face of goal, with Barry Bannan only able to prod an awkward shot at the keeper from the back stick area.

Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Leigh Griffiths has another lash - a rare dig with his right foot - forcing the keeper to push it behind for a corner.

GOAL Lithuania 1-0 Malta

Fedor Cernych

Lithuania are poised to go above Scotland in Group F after going in front against Malta, Fedor Cernych - who netted at Hampden on Saturday - getting the opener.

Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

John McGinn slides a nicely weighted pass through for Leigh Griffiths to scurry after and the striker drags a decent first-time effort narrowly wide of the far post.

Shocking pink

Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Rob Maclean

BBC Scotland

The problem with Scotland wearing pink shirts is that they tend to stand out when you're looking at defenders not doing their jobs.

Another Scotland change

Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

There's nothing happening for Scotland at all. No pace, no energy, no fight.

Steven Fletcher trots off to be replaced by Hibs midfielder John McGinn. That looks like damage limitation.

Familiar failings

Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Richard Wilson

BBC Scotland in Trnava

The Scottish contingent inside the City Arena - players and fans - were already deflated even before Slovakia's third goal. The visitors were still working gamely, and the introduction of Leigh Griffiths and Ikechi Anya ought to have injected a sense of urgency into their play.

The team is forlorn, though, and defensive vulnerability has undermined the spirited performance in the first-half. Damage limitation might be wise now, since the game is lost and a more galling defeat would be more damaging to morale.

Scotland can only dwell on their failings just now, though, all of which are wearily familiar.

Slovakia 3-0 Scotland

Rob Maclean

BBC Scotland

Slovakia's third goal is the worst of the lot for Scotland. Grant Hanley didn't attack the ball at all six yards out and Adam Nemec found himself with an unchallenged header to add to the misery.

Good night Trnava! Robert Mak swings in a corner from the left and Adam Nemec rises above a flailing Grant Hanley to nod in. Easy as you like.
