Gladbach to make life 'difficult' for Celtic

German journalist Gunter Koch on Sportsound

"Everybody says Gladbach is one of the favourites for the runner-up position after Bayern Munich and Dortmund. It's a good team and they have money. I'd say for Gladbach, this is going to be a good chance to possibly make it very, very difficult for Celtic."

Celtic's 'big hope'

Tom English

BBC Sport Scotland

"Borussia Monchengladbach were in Man City's group last season as well - along with Juventus and Sevilla. They finished bottom but beat Sevilla 4-2 and got two draws against Juventus. They also beat and drew with Bayern in the Bundesliga last season.

"Since then, though, they have lost two big players. Granit Xhaka has joined Arsenal for £35m and Harvard Nordvelt has gone to West Ham. It's hard to see where Celtic are going to get some joy in this extraordinary group, but Monchengladbach will be their big hope."

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell

"It could've been easier," he has told BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound. "There's some real glamour ties in there. Really great nights ahead at Celtic Park.

"City, we’ve got a great relationship with. Great nights ahead.

"It couldn't be any more difficult but [Brendan Rodgers] has got off to a great start. It's been a fantastic start. We'll have an attempt to get one more in [a player] before next Wednesday [transfer deadline]."

Can he reveal the position Celtic will attempt to strengthen? "No."

"All eyes will be on Celtic in Europe. And that's what they want; that's where they want to be: in with the elite."

Tierney relishes Barca tilt

Jonathan Sutherland

BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic Park

Celtic defender Kieran Tierney says he is looking forward to testing himself against a Barcelona side he considers to be the best in the world.

Celtic have been drawn with the Catalan side in Group C, along with Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Tierney believes Barcelona are currently the top side in the global game.

"I would say so. I have always thought that, [watching] Messi growing up. It is just brilliant to watch them, and hopefully I can play against him."

"It is a great draw, three great, great teams. That is why we are in the Champions League, to play the best."

"We are always hopeful. We prepare ourselves right and we do the right work on the training field. Anything can happen."

Old foes Barca

Celtic have been drawn to face Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach in Champions League Group C.

The Scottish Premiership winners reached the group stage by beating Israeli champions Hapoel Beer Sheva 5-4 on aggregate.

The first Group C fixtures will take place on 13 or 14 September.

Celtic have progressed to the last 16 of the competition on three occasions, most recently in season 2012-13.

'Holywood' draw

Tom English

BBC Sport Scotland

"This is a Hollywood draw for Celtic. Brutally hard, but impossibly glamorous. It came down to two possibilities. They were either going into Group B with Benfica, Napoli and Dynamo Kiev or into Group C with Barcelona, Man City and Borussia Monchengladbach.

"The got the latter and their pulses will be racing now. The stars of Barcelona and Man City will make Celtic fans giddy with excitement plus there is the  great dynamic of Pep Guardiola going up against his former team.

"Monchengladbach are formidable, too. They don't have stellar names but they were  fourth in the Bundesliga last season and they cruised through to the group stage with a 9-2 win over Young Boys.

"This is thrilling and frightening in equal measure."
