As both Jurgen Klopp and Claude Puel have said, it's only half-time in this League Cup tie and the second leg at Anfield should be a cracker.

That's it from us for tonight. See you later!

'We cannot be happy with the performance'

Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on 5 live: "I am not happy of course. The game changed when they scored a goal and we lost a lot of what we needed.

"Our passing game got nervous, I don't know why. We gave the ball away so easily and we needed Loris Karius to save our lives two or three times.

"The best thing for us is the result. We know that we can play better at Anfield, nothing is decided.

"We cannot be happy with the performance, Southampton cannot be happy with the result. It could and should have been 2-0, 3-0.

"I can't remember a clear chance for us."

'We can have a strong game at Liverpool'

Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Southampton boss Claude Puel, speaking to Sky Sports: "We are deserving this result with all the many chances we had. It was important to win with the clean sheet and we can have a strong game at Liverpool. I think Liverpool had just the one chance all game. We were unlucky at the end because we know Liverpool away in the second leg will be very difficult.

"It was the same in the Premier League - a strong defence - but this game was interesting because we were strong in defence and were better to keep the ball and to have a very good counter attack. It was a very, very good game but it is just the first leg and we are just one goal up.

"This competition is exciting, now it is important to keep the good concentration for the Premier League. We lost three games so it is important to have the good reaction."

Tense. Nervy. Edgy... Relief. Joy. Barcelona and their fans have taken a ride on the whole emotional rollercoaster that football has to offer. But it is worth it - the holders are through to the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

Hugs all around for Lionel Messi after his brilliant free-kick proves the difference between Barca and visitors Athletic Bilbao after 180 minutes of push and shove.

Chris Hickman: Only 11 days ago we beat City and everything was peachy, a bit of perspective needed.

Albert Poon: Thank goodness it's only half-time in this tie. Liverpool need to break this winless streak asap.

Peter Campbell: Liverpool lost the 1st leg of their Europa League semi final 1-0, and won the 2nd leg comfortably. Wait until Anfield!

'It's only half-time'

Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: "After the goal we conceded the reaction was not good. We lost timing, we were not compact enough, everything changed and that reaction was not good. Maybe it is easy to explain - we made wrong decisions - but it is a cup game and especially in an away cup game you concede a goal and it is tough.

"They had the biggest chances because we were not compact enough in situations and Loris Karius had to save our life, a deserved win for Southampton but it is only half time.

"In this moment I am not too happy with the performance after 1-0. We should have been more clear in our passing. It is difficult, we could have done better. Things like this happen.

"We were in a good shape when we started, but the reaction was not good. Why exactly I will have to look again. The second leg will be a completely different game. Nobody should think it is already decided."

Barcelona 3-1 Athletic Bilbao (agg 4-3)

Cometh the hour, cometh the Messi! A roar of relief as Lionel Messi does the business when it really matters. As usual. The Barcelona forward whips in a delicious free-kick to give the home side breathing space. But... one more Athletic goal will see them through to the Copa del Rey last eight. Into the final 10...

Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool will fancy their chances of turning things around in the return leg, but they've got to score and that something's they've struggled to do of late - they've scored just twice in the three games in 2017 and have failed to score in successive matches for the first time in almost a year.

Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Southampton

Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk: "We won and kept a clean sheet which was important. We played good football at times against a great team but we were unlucky today. It's all about communication at the back, we talked to each other well. It will be tough, we knew that, but it's a good win. We need to believe - a final is something special for the club."

Southampton goalscorer Nathan Redmond: "I should have had four goals today. I didn't realise how much time I had but I will learn from those mistakes. At least we won and we can take a lead to Anfield."

Liverpool lacked a wide player, the two full-backs took an eternity to get forwards. Southampton were always set and when crosses did come in Virgil van Dijk was dominant in the air.

While Spanish champions Barcelona struggle to break down their stubborn Copa del Rey opponents, there have also been a few problems for their Italian counterparts.

Juventus, aiming for a third successive Serie A and Coppa Italia double, survive a stirring fightback from Atalanta to win 3-2 in their last-16 tie. Meanwhile, French double winners Paris St Germain are 2-0 ahead against Metz in their Coupe de la Ligue quarter-final. Thiago Silva has bagged both goals. You've read that right.

Shane Daly: Sturridge showed tonight that I would rather have his uncle Dean playing up front.

Stevey Gee Sings: In the grand scheme of things I will take that. Let's take The Saints down at Anfield.

'An opportunity missed for Saints'

You can make a strong case for Southampton winning 2-0 or even 3-0. Everyone here is happy but this is an opportunity missed.

If Southampton don't go through they will be kicking themselves. This is an opportunity missed.

When you're playing football at 9.30 but have to revise for a big test at 11...

FULL-TIME

Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

All over and Southampton win the first leg 1-0, but they could have had a couple more.

Sets things up nicely for the second leg, though. That takes place at Anfield on 25 January.

Liverpool would still be favourites - I may have swayed the other way if Southampton had a second. As they should have done.

Another bit of skill by Philippe Coutinho 25 yards from goal opens up a bit of space for the Brazilian to have a pop of goal, but he skies his effort. Jurgen Klopp sucks his teeth before breaking out a wry smile at the awfulness of the shot.

Four minutes of time added on and Southampton are camped out on the edge of their own area. Liverpool doing all the pressing, could they snatch an equaliser?

Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

A nice little shimmy by Philippe Coutinho on the edge of the Liverpool area... before he over hits a pass out wide and out for a goalkick. The Brazilian, understandably, looks a little rusty.

Someone has just sneaked a cat in among the pigeons. Chaos. Seconds after Barcelona go 2-0 ahead, Athletic pull back an all-important away goal.

Saborit's towering header pulls the visitors level in this gripping last-16 tie. That was Athletic's first shot on target. Extra-time as it stands...

Given their performance, Liverpool will surely take a one-goal deficit going into the second leg. However, they have the chance to restore parity with a corner, but James Milner's effort is cleared. The Reds have been poor from set pieces.

Barcelona fans haven't seen Neymar's cheeky grin for a while - it's back!

The Brazil forward increases Barca's lead with his first goal in domestic football since 2 October. He is clumsily fouled by an away defender in the box, picking himself up to coolly slot into the bottom left corner. Keeper? Sent.

All hope not lost for Athletic though. The visitors need one goal to take this to extra time.

HITS THE WOODWORK

Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Another big chance for Southampton. Shane Long plays a sublime ball across the face of goal for the onrushing Nathan Redmond who, with three Liverpool players on the line, cleverly attempts the chip but it strikes the bar before Adam Lallana hooks away the loose ball.

Liverpool have Divock Origi on the bench. He bagged a hat-trick when these two sides met in the League Cup at St Mary's last season, time to send him on soon? He's staying in his seat for now.

Barcelona 1-0 Athletic Bilbao (agg 2-2)

Half-time at the Nou Camp where Luis Enrique is delivering a tactical masterclass no doubt. The words 'do', 'not' and 'concede' will be getting bandied about. In Spanish, obviously.

Barcelona are 45 minutes away from the Copa Del Rey last eight after Luis Suarez's volley.

We're already back underway in the second halves of the earlier kick-offs in Italy and France. Coppa Italia holders Juventus are still 2-0 up against Atalanta, while defending champions Paris St-Germain are 1-0 ahead against Metz in the Coupe de la Ligue.

SUBSTITUTION

A lucky escape for Liverpool as Lucas blocks Oriol Romeu as Southampton again threatened to break quickly from the edge of their own area.

'Dreadful!'

Steve Claridge

Dreadful. Dreadful! If you are going to miss you've got to miss at the far post. You should never hit the near post from an angle like that.

Pass it - or shoot across goal! If Southampton get two goals Liverpool will be up against it in the second leg.

CLOSE!

Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Oh big chance for Southampton to add a second!

Not for the first time, Liverpool are caught on the counter after their own attack breaks down. Southampton are three against two with Nathan Redmond leading the charge and he puts Cedric Soares through on goal but the defending slams a shot into the sidenetting. Should have hit the target.

Klopp counting on Coutinho

Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer at St. Mary's

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp gave Philippe Coutinho a warm embrace before sending him on - perhaps because he knows how much he is counting on him here.

Klopp's side just haven't got going at all but they are still right in this game at only one down and he will be hoping the little Brazilian can provide the moment of magic Liverpool are seeking.
