GOODBYE

Gotta be in it to win it.

Ajax, Anderlecht, Besiktas, Celta Vigo, Genk, Lyon, Manchester United and Schalke are the teams in the hat for Friday's Europa League quarter-final draw.

United will not be looking at any of those teams thinking, "ooh, they scare us".

Have a read of Gary Rose's match report

We are back on Saturday for Premier League action.

Until then.

'The player asked for a banana'

Man Utd 1-0 Rostov (agg: 2-1)

Manchester United

And lastly from Jose Mourinho on Manchester City going out of Europe: "I'm very disappointed. I'm not making fun of it. I'm feeling it. It's bad for us for many reasons.

"All the five teams in front of us in the Premier League, nobody has international football so will be playing one match per week like some of them have been all season. They don't know what fatigue is. We fight until the limits."

On Marcos Rojo eating a banana during the game: "If you were tired any time in your life, I was tired many times, I know what the body needs. It needs anything. The player asked for a banana. But it's not to laugh at all. It's to respect the players."

'We had problems'

Man Utd 1-0 Rostov (agg: 2-1)

Manchester United

More from Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho: "In the first half we were fresh and dominant, we created chances. They didn't cross the midfield line.

"Everything looked like we would score a couple of goals and kill the game. They played clearly to let the game go to a period when we would logically be in trouble. We let the game open. They let it open too. In the last part of the game we had problems, injuries, we had to make changes."

'We have a lot of enemies'

Man Utd 1-0 Rostov (agg: 2-1)

Manchester United

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is not happy with the fixture scheduling which saw them face Chelsea on Monday and then visit Middlesbrough on Sunday lunchtime.

He told BT Sport: “We were afraid of extra time. It was a difficult game. We have lots of enemies. Normally the enemies should be Rostov but we have a lot of enemies. It's difficult to play Monday with 10 men, it's difficult to play now, it's difficult to play 12 o’clock on Sunday. We have a lot of enemies.

"A lot of people might say we should have scored more goals. But a lot of things are going against us. The boys are amazing boys. We will probably lose the game on Sunday. Fatigue has a price. I will remember forever when I spoke to the Uefa delegate in Rostov. He told me if any of our players gets injured, the insurance paid. Whoever decided the Monday and Sunday games probably thinks the same way.”

Colin Reardon: We'll take the win, but that was as poor a performance as I've seen from Manchester United this season! Ugly.

Lawrence from Stoke:  Mourinho playing defensive in Europa League is genius. Save the attacking football for the league games where we need to pick up points and then go into the last eight in Europe with more to play for

Anon: 22 shots but still defensive? Think some people need to give up the narrative at times

Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata tells BT Sport: "It was a matter of finishing our chances again. We created some good chances but we could not score. It is important we kept a clean sheet so we are happy today.

"They are a team that push until the end. They play with a difficult system but we adapted well. We are playing at Old Trafford and need to do well.

"Our aim is to win every tournament we play in. It is a good chance to play Champions League next season and we will try until the end. The level in the Europa League is difficult."

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling: "We have two top quality goalkeepers and they step up when called. We have a good squad.

"We hope the injuries to Daley Blind and Paul Pogba are not too serious."

Phil Taylor, London: This game proves that Jose is the wrong man. He is so defensive, which is not Manchester United. And Sir Alex was never afraid to drop a player. Zlatan has done nothing all game and after he will take all the credit, why not drop him for one or two games? He has missed so many one on ones already this season.

Ever heard of Videoton?

Man Utd 1-0 Rostov

Simon Stone

BBC Sport at Old Trafford

That Juan Mata goal has put Manchester United on course for their first Europa League/Uefa Cup quarter-final since 1985.

Their opponents on that occasion were Hungarian league side Videoton, now managed by Henning Berg, who was part of United's 1998-99 Treble-winning squad.

United will hope for better luck than Ron Atkinson had then. They lost on penalties.

United break the deadlock

Man Utd 1-0 Rostov (agg: 2-1)

They have huffed and puffed all match and finally get the breakthrough.

United were on the back foot for a while, but broke clear through Zlatan Ibrahimovic's pass to Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian kept his cool and slotted a cross into the area for Ibrahimovic to backheel on and waiting at the back post was Juan Mata to tuck into an open net.
