Goals were farcical - McGhee

FT: Aberdeen 7-2 Motherwell

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee: "We lost the game in the first half. I discount the second half. The goals were farcical, most of them."

McGhee added he was "horrified" at being sent to the stand and was unhappy with the fourth official's stance.

League table ramifications

FT: Aberdeen 7-2 Motherwell

Aberdeen now hold a three-point advantage over third-placed Rangers and the Dons are also 19 goals better off. Derek McInnes' side trail runaway leaders Celtic by 24 points.

Motherwell drop a place to ninth but are still level on points with Dundee and Ross County.

McInnes lauds 'excellent' Dons

FT: Aberdeen 7-2 Motherwell

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes: "I can't speak highly enough of the players. So strong. We threatened to score even more.

"There were so many positives from tonight's performance. The team were excellent from start to finish."

What's next for these sides?

FT: Aberdeen 7-2 Motherwell

Aberdeen will travel to Rugby Park full of confidence for Sunday's match with Kilmarnock.

On Saturday, Motherwell are at Celtic Park, where they have already lost twice this season, including a 5-0 defeat in the League Cup.

Fabulous performance.

FULL-TIME

Aberdeen 7-2 Motherwell

What a night at Pittodrie. A near flawless attacking display for Aberdeen and a total nightmare for Motherwell.

Ridiculously rampant

Aberdeen 7-2 Motherwell

Martin Dowden

BBC Sport Scotland at Pittodrie

Motherwell have the audacity to score twice and what do their hosts do? Score again. Ruthless.

They then went after an eighth. The crowd urged Ash Taylor to smash one from distance. He did and it was so close. This ground surely hasn't enjoyed many performances this much since the glory days. The crowd have simply been enthralled.

Willie Miller

Former Aberdeen defender on BBC Sportsound

It could've been into the double digit scenario. It's been embarrassing enough.

GREAT SAVE!

Aberdeen 7-2 Motherwell

Aberdeen are still going for it and defender Ash Taylor's shot is blocked out by Craig Samson.

GOAL Aberdeen 7-2 Motherwell

Peter Pawlett

And that's the evening's ninth goal!

Jonny Hayes picks out substitute Peter Pawlett, who slides the ball past Craig Samson.

GOAL Aberdeen 6-2 Motherwell

Stephen Pearson

A second for Motherwell as Stephen Pearson volleys in after a corner is headed on by Ben Heneghan.

Christie applauded off

GREAT SAVE!

Aberdeen 6-1 Motherwell

Craig Samson smothers a close-range effort by Kenny McLean as Aberdeen seek a seventh.

GOAL Aberdeen 6-1 Motherwell

Ryan Bowman

One back for Well. Goalkeeper Joe Lewis needlessly comes off his line and Ryan Bowman heads in Richard Tait's free-kick.

Race for second

Aberdeen 6-0 Motherwell

Martin Dowden

BBC Sport Scotland at Pittodrie

This is significant in that race for second place in the Premiership. Aberdeen will establish a three-point lead over Rangers, who will surely lack stability after Mark Warburton's departure.

If goal difference becomes a factor Aberdeen are now almost out of sight on that front which gives another cushion. A hat-trick for Rooney will add to his confidence. Things are looking very good for Aberdeen right now.

Job done for Rooney and McGinn

Aberdeen 6-0 Motherwell

Aberdeen's hat-trick hero Adam Rooney makes way for Jayden Stockley.

Peter Pawlett also comes on for the hosts in place of Niall McGinn.

GOAL Aberdeen 6-0 Motherwell

Adam Rooney - hat-trick

Adam Rooney flicks home Niall McGinn's corner to complete his hat-trick. More dreadful defending from Motherwell.

Change for Motherwell

Aberdeen 5-0 Motherwell

Craig Clay replaces Elliott Frear for Motherwell.

It’s been that kind of night for Motherwell – everything that could go wrong has gone wrong.

GOAL Aberdeen 5-0 Motherwell

Adam Rooney, penalty

No mistake from Adam Rooney from the spot as he sends Craig Samson the wrong way. A second goal of the evening for Rooney.

PENALTY

Aberdeen 4-0 Motherwell

Shay Logan is clipped in the box by Elliott Frear and Aberdeen have a spot-kick.

McGhee sent to the stand

Aberdeen 4-0 Motherwell

It's not been a good night so far for Motherwell manager Mark McGhee and now he has been ordered away from the technical area by referee Alan Muir.

McGhee was animated as he made his way up the stairs and was making his opinion known to those around him.

Bowman blow

Aberdeen 4-0 Motherwell

Ryan Bowman, who replaced Lee Lucas at half-time, takes a sore one in a challenge with Ash Taylor and the Motherwell substitute receives treatment.

Already written

Aberdeen 4-0 Motherwell

Martin Dowden

BBC Sport Scotland at Pittodrie

For the first time in my career, my full-time report was written at half-time. It'd take something quite ridiculous to change it, with the exception of further Aberdeen goals.

What's left for Motherwell? Win the second half? At least that would offer a crumb of comfort but they've got more problems to come. Celtic away lies in wait.

GREAT SAVE!

Aberdeen 4-0 Motherwell

Craig Samson prevents a fifth Aberdeen goal by beating away Kenny McLean's long-range shot.

YELLOW CARD

Aberdeen 4-0 Motherwell

First-half scorer Andy Considine is booked for handball.

KICK-OFF

Aberdeen 4-0 Motherwell

Motherwell start the second half. What can they do to stem the flow of Aberdeen attacks in this second half?

McInnes has more to do at Dons - Miller

Former Aberdeen captain and manager Willie Miller believes Derek McInnes has unfinished business at Pittodrie.

"I still think there's more to come from Derek McInnes and Aberdeen," Miller told BBC Scotland earlier today.

"He's won the League Cup [in 2014], he's done well in the league. They're doing well in the Scottish Cup - I think that's a definite target for him this season.

"In Europe he's done well but there's still a bit to go there.

"It's a target for Derek to once again finish second and I think it would be a great achievement if he could, with Rangers and Hearts back in the top tier.

"Rangers, if they're doing their job properly, should be looking at the record of Derek McInnes. He's done a fantastic job at Aberdeen.

"I know that the board of directors up here wouldn't want to lose him. The fans wouldn't want to lose him. But then again, football is football and if an offer comes then he would have to consider it."

Huffam: The only thing that is going to beat the Dons tonight is the ominous fog. #bbcsportscot

Willie Miller

Former Aberdeen defender on BBC Sportsound

I’m taking nothing away from Aberdeen but defensively Motherwell have been absolutely dreadful. The heads are down, the body language tells me they are finished.

They know they can get nothing from this game. Mark McGhee has to cross his fingers that the sting goes out of Aberdeen. They are so far ahead of Motherwell it’s untrue.

Party time at half-time

Aberdeen 4-0 Motherwell

Martin Dowden

BBC Sport Scotland at Pittodrie

Adam Rooney just attempted a ridiculous volley, with a ridiculous outcome. It wasn't showboating. It was a measure of just how much on top Aberdeen are.

I hate to say it but this is men against boys territory. I assume Motherwell boss Mark McGhee will be hoping the lights fail again. They've been utterly thumped.

HALF-TIME

Aberdeen 4-0 Motherwell

As perfect a first half as Aberdeen could have hoped for. They are well on course to go three points clear of second-placed Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

Motherwell's hopes of getting into the top six tonight appear forlorn, very forlorn.

Contrast in confidence

Aberdeen 4-0 Motherwell

Aberdeen look hungry for more goals every time they move forward. Motherwell look increasingly nervous and edgy.

Ryan Christie canters towards the byline and cuts back for Ryan Jack, who slides in to shoot over.

Liam McLeod

BBC Sport Scotland commentator

This is a rout at Pittodrie.

GOAL Aberdeen 4-0 Motherwell

Ryan Christie

Aberdeen, oozing with confidence, have another corner. Niall McGinn takes it short to Ryan Christie, who lets the ball run to Andy Considine before receiving it back and delicately dinking the ball into the top corner with the outside of his left foot.

Defending, really?

Aberdeen 3-0 Motherwell

Martin Dowden

BBC Sport Scotland at Pittodrie

Things couldn't be going better for Aberdeen. They couldn't be worse for Motherwell. Their defending has gone from bad, to worse, to horrible. I'm not sure they're capable of it getting any worse.

This may end up a cricket score.

It’s the easiest goal he’s ever going to score. Motherwell had a mountain to climb and they have shot themselves in the foot again.

Former Motherwell defender Craig Paterson on BBC Sportsound

GOAL Aberdeen 3-0 Motherwell

Adam Rooney

Another catastrophe at the back for Motherwell.

Steven Hammell's defensive header is bouncing out until Keith Lasley tries to whack the ball upfield but his mis-hit clearance presents the ball to Jonny Hayes, who squares for Adam Rooney to score.
