Good night

With BBC radio 5 live now focusing on today's events in London, we are bringing this page to an end.

We will have reaction from Gareth Southgate, and probably Lukas Podolski, on our pages as soon as we get it.

Thanks as ever for the company tonight - we will be back on Friday night for Republic of Ireland v Wales.

'We found out so much tonight'

Scotland 1-1 Canada

Scotland coach Gordon Strachan on BBC Radio Scotland:  "It's one of the best decisions we've made as the coaching group in the SFA by playing this game.

"We found out so many things tonight. It's very hard for players who are not playing regularly to turn on the magic and feel really good about themselves.

"So, we learned that lesson, the lesson that you really can't mis-pass the ball so many times in the first 10 minutes and expect to then go and play, really, that well because you lose a bit of confidence.

"I thought we could've trusted each other better with the ball.

"Because of our first 15 minutes, giving the ball away, I thought we got a bit negative."

'You have to be patient'

Germany 1-0 England

More from England captain Gary Cahill, speaking to ITV: "There are still a lot of positives."

Asked if the terrorist attack in London had been playing on the players' minds, Cahill added: "That's terrible. We were focused on the job we had to do."

After the events in London today, we may be struggling to get live reaction from Gareth Southgate.

I shall bring you any reaction when I get it.

'We focused on our job'

More from England captain Gary Cahill:  "I thought we played well today, especially the first half, we controlled the game.

"We just focused on the job we had to do, work hard and produce a performance we had to.

"We have gone in on that formation on the back of one day on the training pitch. It's difficult to grasp it straight away."

Germany 1-0 England

Dele Alli and Adam Lallana were impressive tonight, close to transferring their club form to international level which has not been the case for many England players over the last, well, 30 years.

Joshua Holmes: Unfortunate to lose

Simon Rowley: encouraging performance, just needed the goals. Keane looks an England player for long time. Alli and Lallana superb.

Dave Ellis: Enjoyable.England pressing and moving the ball around like..well.. the top clubs in England. Lessons have been learned

'Learning curve'

Germany 1-0 England

England captain Gary Cahill, speaking to ITV: "We had the better chances in the game. I think when we look back and reflect, if we'd taken our chances we'd have won the game. It's a learning curve for us."

'Germany win... again'

Germany 1-0 England

Football is a simple game. 22 men chase a ball around for 90 minutes. Podolski kicks it really hard and Germany win....again.

'Devoid of quality'

Scotland 1-1 Canada

Steven Thompson

Former Scotland striker on BBC Sportsound

It's been one of the flattest second halves I've watched this season. That's a performance devoid of quality.

Gareth Brett:  Don't rate Rashford as a sole striker at all. Great as a support but needs goalscorer alongside IMO.

Rich: Marcus Rashford is the most overrated player in this country, hasn't done much all season and doesn't look like he is improving either

Dan the Man: We dominated possesion!!! We tried but couldn't win!!!

Name them all!

Germany 1-0 England

Lukas Podolski had 115 different team-mates in his 130 caps for Germany. He is getting the bumps down by the dugouts.

Not many players get a send-off like this.

'A brilliant goal'

Germany 1-0 England

Alan Shearer

Ex-England striker

We had our chances, but not to be. Congratulations to @Podolski10 on a great international career and a brilliant goal to sign off. #GERENG

Germany 1-0 England

England captain Gary Cahill says "if we take our chances, we win that game".

Fair?

Kyle: Brilliant goal from a brilliant player. Fitting way for him to go out. That said England were excellent throughout.

David Penn: I'm now into my 5th decade as an England fan & only one fact counts: a poor, underwhelming Germany still managed to beat us 1-0

Daran Philipson: England have been terrible in the final third, too many wrong decisions. I don't think Kane wd make a difference either.

Germany 1-0 England

There's a slight flaw in that plan, Danny, if teams in the top six don't play too many English players.

From the starting XI only Joe Hart, Ryan Bertrand, Michael Keane, Jake Livermore and Jamie Vardy play for teams outside the top six anyway.

'England need top-six players'

Germany 1-0 England

Danny Mills

Ex-Leeds defender on BBC Radio 5 live

The whole squad should really be coming from those top-six clubs or those playing Champions League football if you want to compete with Germany.

You'll find that with Germany.

It was not a bad performance from England, but Germany were the slightly better side in the end.

England had chances and weren't clinical. Germany brought on experience, England brought on youth - but what a stunning goal.

Germany 1-0 England

Germany have now gone 648 minutes without conceding an international goal. They rode their luck at times tonight - Dele Alli and Adam Lallana should both really have scored. They both could have scored anyway.

'2-0 would be unfair'

Germany 1-0 England

Danny Mills

Ex-Leeds defender on BBC Radio 5 live

I think 2-0 would be a little unfair. Get through to 90 minutes and it's not been a disaster in any way, shape or form.

FULL-TIME

Scotland 1-1 Canada

Germany 1-0 England

Urgent pressing from Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard but Germany work the ball out well.

Germany 1-0 England

Gareth Southgate said in his pre-match interview that he wanted to be able to learn something from tonight's game, and I'm sure he has. He should have learned that this 3-4-3 got the best from Dele Alli and with Harry Kane up front it should work nicely.

John Stones makes a crucial deflection to prevent Andre Schurrle from making it 2-0.

Germany 1-0 England

Glenn Hoddle reckons it was the music from Gladiator. Fitting.

John Stones is on for the last five minutes, in place of Chris Smalling.

'Worthy of winning any game'

Germany 1-0 England

Danny Mills

Ex-Leeds defender on BBC Radio 5 live

It was an absolutely stunning goal, worthy of winning any game.

Everyone is on their feet, applauding a superb career. He probably won't have scored a better one than that.

SUBSTITUTION - Podolski off

Germany 1-0 England

Lukas Podolski hugs Joachim Low as they pump in some emotional music for his farewell. Like an 80s movie. Ghost maybe.

Sebastian Rudy is the man on.

Germany 1-0 England

Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer in Dortmund

Lukas Podolski has been trying everything to score tonight and what a way to mark your international farewell. He can put that right up there with his best goals and how they loved that inside the Signal Iduna Park.

SUBSTITUTIONS

Germany 1-0 England

The last few minutes have seen Germany keep the ball for a long time, for the first real time to be honest. The pressing from England may have taken its toll.

England send on Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse, another debutant. Off go Jake Livermore and Ryan Bertrand.

'Germany showing experience'

Germany 1-0 England

Danny Mills

Ex-Leeds defender on BBC Radio 5 live

It's no real surprise Germany are starting to show that little bit extra, that little bit of experience.

They are world champions.

'I didn't even see that'

Germany 1-0 England

Germany 1-0 England

Marc-Andre ter Stegen doesn't convince with a punch and the ball almost falls for Jesse Lingard, but he hesitates and is closed down.

England come again but Ryan Bertrand and Marcus Rashford don't make the most of possession 20 yards from goal.

SUBSTITUTION

Germany 1-0 England

Thomas Muller is on for Germany, he replaces Timo Werner. He can't buy a goal for Bayern Munich but might fancy his chances against England. He really made his name in 2010.

Germany 1-0 England

England fans and players alike will be wondering quite how they are losing tonight, but one swing from the Podolski hammer has smashed the deadlock. With Dele Alli and Adam Lallana now on the bench do England have the players to conjure a response?

'Hart did really well'

Germany 1-0 England

Danny Mills

Ex-Leeds defender on BBC Radio 5 live

Brilliant save. Leroy Sane did really well and so did Joe Hart.

A strong left hand to not just stop it, but keep hold of it as well.

GREAT SAVE!

Germany 1-0 England

Marcus Rashford leaves Mats Hummels in his dust out on the right, he flashes in a low cross which Marc-Andre ter Stegen just about fields.

And then a great save at the other end, Michael Keane gets in a tangle with Leroy Sane and the Manchester City man is in. Hits it low and hard, but Joe Hart makes a fantastic one-handed stop.

SUBSTITUTION

Germany 1-0 England

Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard are on for Jamie Vardy and the game's best player, Dele Alli.

'Absolutely exceptional'

Germany 1-0 England

Danny Mills

Ex-Leeds defender on BBC Radio 5 live

Wow.

He drives that with a bit of bend into the top corner.

Joe Hart had no chance. Lukas Podolski couldn't have hit that any sweeter. Absolutely exceptional.

Podolski hits stunning strike

Germany 1-0 England

Wow! He's barely been in the game but on his final Germany appearance, Lukas Podolski hammers in his 49th international goal to give the hosts an undeserved lead.

It's sensational, it really is. Touched off to him maybe 25 yards out, drew back the left foot and smashed it right into the top corner.

One more for the 50...

'Vardy looking for ball over top'

Germany 0-0 England

Danny Mills

Ex-Leeds defender on BBC Radio 5 live

It's not Jamie Vardy's fault, but because we know he wants to spin in behind, England try and force that ball over the top.

He has got two or three defenders on him. I don't think England would do that if it was Harry Kane or Jermain Defoe.
