'We were not sufficient'

Southampton 0-3 Manchester City

Southampton

Southampton manager Claude Puel on Match of the Day: "In the second half they scored two goals on the counter-attack, but I thought we could have done better today. We simply did not play well enough against this team, nervous with the ball.

"It's a disappointment because we can do better, we can create better opportunities. We did not have enough today, we were not sufficient. It was not a good day for us, but congratulations to Manchester City.

"Today, we have them too many opportunities. Against good teams we have to show our best qualities, to defend well and show better organisation."

'We have players who can deliver'

Southampton 0-3 Manchester City

Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to Match of the Day: "Congratulations to the team, especially the way we played. We were able finally to make 15, 20, 25 passes in a row. Up front we could be better but our quality of play meant we had control. This result is so important for our qualification for the Champions League.

"Every manager Vincent Kompany has played under knows what an important player he is. Finally, in recent games he has played he has delivered performances and hopefully he can stay fit. I want him fit enough to play every week - he has suffered for a long periods but he is a real, real central defender.

"In the first half we controlled the game but Southampton were good out wide. But after we scored they had to press us and so we were able to find our passes between the lines much easier. And with players like Kompany and Silva we have players who can deliver on the counter-attack."

'I keep positive and keep going'

Southampton 0-3 Manchester City

Manchester City

More from Vincent Kompany, speaking to Match of the Day: "I scored in front of the away fans and for me it was a great feeling. I feel like I want to give so much but I am restrained at times, but I keep positive and keep going no matter what.

"I want to remember these positive experiences - playing football like this is not something many people experience. It's worth every minute of hard work."

Good on their travels

'Ups and downs'

Southampton 0-3 Man City

Manchester City

More from Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany: "It's ups and downs in football, but ultimately what gets you up is you keep looking towards your objective. If I had to work 15 years to have just one moment like this I would do.

"I am happy today but I will stay calm and prepare well for the next game.

"We knew this game was massive for us and there was so much pressure, so to come here and have such a performance, everyone in the team deserves top marks. It's always a process of improving, getting better.

"Next up is the FA Cup - I love the Cup and love a derby!"

Andy Knowles: Really good win and important 3 points. Great to see Vinny back. Such a huge player for us when fit.

'I put in the hard work and it pays off'

Southampton 0-3 Manchester City

Manchester City

Manchester City captain and goalscorer Vincent Kompany in the tunnel: "I am happy with the goal, it's helped my team, but also happy with the clean sheet. This is an hard place to come and to get the result, we will all be happy.

"For me, it's always a long journey back [after injury]. I would have liked to have been injured less in my career, but when it happens I put in the hard work and it pays off. I am finally giving something back to the team."

It's running order time...

'You could see the unlimited joy on his face'

Southampton 0-3 Manchester City

Fred Eyre

Former Man City player on BBC Radio Manchester

A very, very professional away performance from Manchester City. They had to be very patient, trying to break down a disciplined and rigid Southampton set-up. They didn't manage to do that in the first 45 minutes and when they did it was from Vincent Kompany.

You could see the unlimited joy on his face as he celebrated in front of the travelling faithful.

Southampton 0-3 Man City

After a pretty flat first half, City really turned it on in the second to bag three unanswered goals. We knew they were good in attack, which they underlined with some ruthless moves, but what will please Pep Guardiola is they looked solid and organised at the back.

Amazing the difference a Vincent Kompany can make.

FULL-TIME

Southampton 0-3 Man City

A comfortable win in the end for City, who get a big three points in their hunt for a top-four finish.

Southampton 0-3 Man City

City find joy down the right again through De Bruyne, who eludes any marking to collect before sending in a low ball that is cut out.

Southampton 0-3 Man City

Four added minutes. Won't make any difference to the result.

Southampton 0-3 Man City

St Mary's has emptied out very quickly since that third goal. Better to beat the traffic than endure the last few minutes. Saints have been well beaten today.

'World-class footballers'

Southampton 0-3 Manchester City

Southampton will be unable to work out why they're losing 3-0. Here's the answer: very few sides have an answer to world-class footballers like City's.

SUBSTITUTION

Southampton 0-3 Man City

City's final change sees another of their scorers, Sergio Aguero, replaced by Kelechi Iheanacho.

SUBSTITUTION

Southampton 0-3 Man City

City withdraw another star performer. Leroy Sane's work is done. On comes Raheem Sterling.

'Wonderful footballers'

Two goals in two minutes, and two brilliant goals in two minutes. It was Kevin De Bruyne again, digging the ball out from under his feet to meet Sergio Aguero's head. This is what wonderful footballers can deliver.

SUBSTITUTION

With the win in the bag, Pep takes off David Silva and sends on Pablo Zabaleta.

Saints also make a change, withdrawing Shane Long, who only came on 20 minutes ago but appears to have picked up a knock, and sending on Jay Rodriguez.

Aguero makes sure

Southampton 0-3 Man City

City make absolutely sure. The three points are leaving with them. It is De Bruyne at the heart of things again, running to the byline to collect Jesus Navas' pass before chipping a lovely cross to the back post where Sergio Aguero rises to beat two defenders and nod in.

'Brilliant from De Bruyne'

Southampton 0-2 Manchester City

Fred Eyre

Former Man City player on BBC Radio Manchester

Go back to the source of that goal - Kevin De Bruyne gathered a difficult ball out of the sky with his back to the field and 80 yards from the Southampton goal. He flicked a pass, turned then galloped 70 yards to receive the ball back from David Silva.

He took it on, could have shot himself but instead slipped in Sane for an easy finish.

Absolutely brilliant from De Bruyne.

Sane seals the three points

Southampton 0-2 Man City

Brilliant goal. City punish Southampton on the break to claim a game-winning lead. Kevin de Bruyne breaks through the Saints defence with a whole half to run into and Sane for company. A retreating defender tries to get back but the Belgian's ball to his team-mate is perfect and Sane does the rest.

'Yoshida had a standing start'

Southampton 0-1 Manchester City

Fred Eyre

Former Man City player on BBC Radio Manchester

Maya Yoshida failed to get the power on his header because he had a standing start. Really, he should have opted to nod it back across the goal and try to find another red and white shirt.

He took it on himself, fair enough, but just headed it straight at Claudio Bravo.

Southampton 0-1 Man City

Southampton, for the first time, apply some concerted pressure. They win two corner in quick succession, the second of which is met by a home head but only to send the ball looping into the hands of Bravo.

Southampton 0-1 Man City

Chance! A really good one as well. A cross from the left is swung into the box, beats everyone but Maya Yoshida, but his header is straight at Bravo, who saves.

For those keeping count, that is an official Bravo save to an on-target effort.

Southampton 0-1 Man City

Well played Jack Stephens. No defender would fancy backtracking as Aguero charges at them but the Saints man holds his ground, bides his time, watches the ball and makes a superb tackle to win the ball and end the City attack.

Southampton 0-1 Man City

City are on the hunt for a second to kill this game. De Bruyne darts to the byline to collect a neat Silva pass but his pull-back is cut out before it can reach Aguero.

Southampton 0-1 Man City

Navas is OK and rejoins the action. Pablo Zabaleta was getting ready for action on the bench.

Southampton 0-1 Man City

Thanks mate! Jesus Navas is limping so the last thing he needs is to be passed the ball on the far side. He responds by gently passing it out of play so he can get some treatment.

Southampton 0-1 Man City

Southampton are hanging on. De Bruyne's cross into the corridor is designed for Aguero but cut out at the very last moment by Maya Yoshida. The ball diverts back to David Silva, whose shot from around the penalty spot is blocked.

Vincent Kompany & David Silva
PA

Rashida: You could see how much that meant to Kompany! The big man delivers.

Ashley Tezoo: City fans when Kompany starts celebrating wildy - 'Don't get injured, don't get injured, don't get injured...'

Southampton 0-1 Man City

Oh, almost two for City and two for Kompany! Another Silva corner lands at the near post, where the defender muscles the ball off his man before seeing his close-range shot blocked.

Soon after, from a subsequent attack. Kevin de Bruyne fires wide.

City well on top now.

SUBSTITUTION

Southampton 0-1 Man City

Fresh legs for Southampton. off go Gabbiadini and Ward-Prowse, on come Sofiane Boufal and Shane Long. One has the tricks, the other will not stop running.

Southampton 0-1 Man City

Kompany's celebrations spoke volumes about the frustrations he has gone through of late with injury. Jumping around like a nutter behind the goal - a very happy man.

There can't be many people, except maybe Southampton supporters, who can't be pleased for Vincent Kompany. He looked like a delighted two-year-old as he celebrated. From a set piece he brings added height to any attack.

It's brilliant that we have seen Kompany score another goal for Manchester City after battling all these injury problems - good luck to him.

Kompany makes the breakthrough

Southampton 0-1 Man City

Vincent Kompany to the rescue! The ball is swung over by David Silva and met by the head of the defender, who gets above Ryan Bertrand and sends the ball past Fraser Forster. It is a big goal from a big player. His first since 16 August 2015.
